Fierce journey where the young crab has to stand up for himself in the only way the gaming industry knows: through Souls-like combat. With crabs. Once he finds out he’ll need to bring something big to retrieve his shell, he’s dragged into a race for a legendary treasure worth more than all microplastics you can imagine. Being a crab Souls-like (or a Shells-like if you prefer) is the game’s whole gimmick, but that’s not all there is to it. Beneath its stiff shell, lies an open-world platformer game as the soul. Sometimes I felt like I was playing a licensed THQ game from the PS2 era. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, although it does come with its own issues that I’ll get into later. Something about how Another Crab’s Treasure looks and feels made overcoming this challenge seem more possible, giving me the mental fortitude to finish a difficult boss fight. And if the visuals didn’t provide me implicit confidence, I still had plenty of assist options to lean back on. It’s not the most refined Soulslike, and its writing may be hit-and-miss depending on your sense of humor, but this is one of the most approachable stabs at the genre I have ever played. Another Crab’s Treasure begins with Kril, a hermit crab living in a tide pool, getting his shell stolen by a loan shark (a literal one) who comes to collect his taxes. This kicks off Kril’s adventure to get his shell back, but things get increasingly out of hand; the queen is corrupted and killed by Kril, but his shell gets taken to a bustling underwater city. In order to get enough money to get his shell back, Kril then sets off on a treasure hunt that brings him up against the megacorporation that runs that town. Living With Sister: Monochrome Fantasy 

Instead of a standard weapon-based parry, you must hide in your shell and pop out of it right before an enemy strikes to parry properly; defeating a large crustacean boss grants you a special hammer claw-like ability for large sweeping strikes; “Umami” magic within each shell manifests in interesting ways, like a shot glass that splits into shards when attacked, a bowling ball-like roll within a tennis ball shell, or homing carbonation bubbles that shoot out of a soda can. Even if sometimes those areas can be a bit confusing. Some spots, at least early on, are fairly expansive and can be quite easy to get lost in. Most are wonderfully realised, though, fitting the theme perfectly with curdled towns erected from empty milk cartons and discarded baskets acting as magnificent centerpoints for poison swamps. Even better is your ability to hop and climb and swing through them, as this is as much a platformer as it is a Soulslike. You’ll bounce off sponges, chuck barbed hooks to grapple over to overhanging netting and do ‘lil doggy paddles to close tight gaps. And don’t worry, the platforming is intuitive and fairly snappy, with very few annoying moments. Most of my joy in combat came from seeing the “new” – the special Umami magic in a new shell, the new ability gained after defeating a major boss, or the new stowaway attachment that increases my vitality or defense, for example. There’s no shortage of quirkiness in the combat, and there’s a respectable amount of departure that works from what I typically expect in a Soulslike. My Life: Farm Vet
