Let’s start by discussing what I find most enjoyable about Lunar Lander Beyond. The game has a charming and nostalgic feel reminiscent of a Saturday morning cartoon from the 80s. The opening sequence, in particular, is a delightful homage to the animated shows of that era. Given that the original game was released in 1979, this choice is a good fit. The characters in Lunar Lander Beyond are playful yet have a slightly edgy vibe, reminiscent of early cartoons but with a more mature twist. Some of the humor may be subtle and geared towards an older audience, with hints of sarcasm and even references to adult themes like drug use. One minor drawback of the game is that the animated intro is not skippable until about forty-five seconds in. While it’s entertaining to watch initially, it can become repetitive after multiple playthroughs. By the third time, I found myself eager to bypass the intro and dive straight into the gameplay. Set in a futuristic landscape, the game casts me as the captain of a spacecraft, operating under a corporation specializing in lucrative cargo and rescue operations. The game unfolds across several unique worlds, each offering a diverse array of missions to undertake. From daring rescue operations that involve skillful landings to retrieve crew members—who may later become part of my crew—to intense defense missions aimed at protecting areas from debris damage. Success in these missions is rewarded with medals, granting me better medals the quicker I complete the tasks. The first thing about Lunar Lander Beyond that utterly shocked me was how rich the story was. This is a narrative first game, where every mission features briefings with your crew, featuring talented voice acting to boot. You’re aboard a Pegasus Corp ship, the Beckett. Though your crew starts out pretty small, originally just consisting of the commander and your plucky AI assistant HARA, you pick up some very eclectic folks as you progress, including Yeh, AKA the Cowboy, and Voronina, a paranoid Russian scientist who regularly espouses Communist ideals. The commander’s name is Sandoz, a former pilot whose injury benched her from flying but who has proven to be a stalwart and calm presence. It’s a weird bunch, and their conflicting personalities make the fabric of the story that much richer. Beyond that, there’s also a mystery that occurs early in the game and which takes the entirety of the experience to finally solve. I wasn’t sure where things were going, only that I was curious to see how it all ended. While that’s all good and well, the thing most people will associate with Lunar Lander is the controls. I’m happy to say that the controls herein are faithful, for good and for bad. You’ll eventually have access to 4 different ships, which vary in terms of how they handle and how you maneuver them. The starting model, the Beetle, is a very floaty ship, and requires holding down ZR to thrust forwards. The Spider craft features similar controls, but rockets forward so quickly it’s easy to propel yourself into floating objects or stage geometry. Ario
