Fans of turn-based combat will undoubtedly enjoy what they find in SaGa Emerald Beyond, as the game relies heavily on it for what little positive game flow there is. Players can view the enemies and everyone’s attack order before combat starts, allowing players the opportunity to change the order using specific attacks that come out quicker, and be able to play a little defense the same way. It is not intuitive at first, but it can be a pretty rewarding experience if players delve deeper into it. Having an attack order with numerous player-controlled characters together can shift the entire flow of the battle in both directions. There are also a ton of different mechanics that change the ebb and flow of fights named things like Overdrive, Interrupts, Glimmers, and Protects. Some are pretty self-explanatory, but others are not and can cause some real confusion when things go back and forth. Developer Square Enix tries hard to explain these, but a lot of them are couched in wordplay like: ‘in battle allies will sometimes…’, which doesn’t explain in firm detail when these actions can be expected to occur. It makes mechanics players can’t rely on, and these random occurrences never seem to happen when most needed. SaGa is an RPG, which might make you think you need to have played the past games to understand the world, but it’s a fully standalone set of stories. In SaGa Emerald Beyond, you’ll have access to five different characters with different stories but similar ways of playing. Tsunanori Mido seems to be the “main character”, as almost every tutorial that pops up features him as the example character. Dark Quest 3

He’s a member of a famous family known for their control of Puppets (which count as companions in his quest). Bonnie and Formina are officers for the CCPD and you’ll have two main characters for that playthrough. Diva No. 5, who is a songstress and that’s all I can say without giving things away. Siugnas is a vampire lord and the style is unparalleled. Finally, there is the daughter of a legendary sage, Ameya Aisling. All five have different storylines and different companions, but the main missions are similar, as mentioned previously. Much like any entry in the series this century, Emerald Beyond features a nonlinear structure where player choice guides you in different directions for each story. You pick between five different characters, ranging from aspiring witch Ameya Aisling to the singing robot Diva No. 5, and then choose between a few different options to explore different worlds leading to an open-ended narrative conclusion that then encourages you to play with a different character or replay one of the characters you have already completed. In my experience, each playthrough took around five hours (give or take), but the deeper I got into each replay, the more bored I became. The playthroughs do build up an overarching story and are filled with enough different areas to visit and things to do that aren’t just identical runs, but the overlap in gameplay and presentation start to blur all the worlds together, turning it into a veritable soup of an RPG quest.
