One of my favorite little touches is the addition of backyard workshops, which let you move commerce into the places where people actually live. That’s much more accurate to the era Manor Lords is trying to capture than having massive commercial buildings everyone works at. I get this cozy, familiar feeling when I zoom in and can see that this is where the town blacksmith lives. And just across the way, Herman and Agnes brew beer for the lively tavern down the road. Almost everything about the sound design and visual presentation is exceptional. Rainstorms patter and boom, leaving roads slick and strewn with puddles. Winter blankets everything in a sparkling frost. The animations for something as simple as getting water from a well are grounded and meticulously detailed in a way that always rewards me for zooming in. Here’s another detail, one that has more to do with the core gameplay. Manor Lords’ basic unit of housing is called a burgage plot. At first, this is just a house with a yard, but once it has been leveled up, the yard can be developed as a sort of small-business venue for the residents, even if they’re employed elsewhere at the farm, the mill, or the storehouse. On this plot, you can set up a chicken coop, a vegetable garden, or a brewery; the residents then take their produce to trade with neighbors at the market. (A marketplace is one of the first requests village residents will make, along with a church.) Healthy market trade generates regional wealth — which you, their lord, can then tax. WWE 2K24

The burgage plot illustrates one of the most striking ways that Manor Lords differs from the pictures of human society painted by other city-building games. In this world, work is distributed, local transport is slow (very slow), and prosperity is grown from the ground up, rather than generated by efficiently designed systems. It is, in short, a simulation of a pre-industrial, pre-capitalist society. As such, it can be difficult to get your thoroughly post-capitalist, industrialized head around it. The realm rejoices with the release of Hooded Horse’s most recent addition to their catalogue: Manor Lords, the new definitive champion of medieval gaming realms. But the question remains: What is Manor Lords? Manor Lords is a medieval city-builder with a pinch of real-time strategy. It’s more Anno than Total War. Less Crusader Kings and more Banished. It’s really hard to find other titles to compare it with. If it had less combat, I would say it was more closely related to Anno 1800, for example. If it was more real-time combat-focused, I would point out to something like Age of Empires. There’s even a neat feature that lets you run around as a character in your own town, but… not without some weirdness. For one thing, you’ll always be the same exact guy, no matter which portrait you chose for your ruler during set-up. And for another, the collision detection on buildings is clearly unfinished. An open gate might feature an impenetrable, invisible wall, whereas you can wander right through the outside of a church without a care like a sacreligious ghost. The Riftbreaker: Into The Dark
