“As someone who’s played every single Call of Duty campaign and really missed it last year, the new Modern Warfare is exactly the kind of single-player revival I’ve been looking for. It introduces welcome new kinds of gameplay moments while executing familiar ones exceptionally well. Sure, its story may not be as provocative as it seems to want to be, but it reestablishes a strong identity for this 16-year-old franchise with a showcase solo shooter experience. Beyond nostalgia I find him even more charismatic, he is our boss, we follow him with our eyes closed… Yes, it is the true return of the king! The sensations are good, just like in the multiplayer, which I was finally able to test at length: we are in pure realism, with gameplay very close to the ground, in the old style… What a joy to find real sensations again! Here we have an effective and generous multiplayer with numerous modes such as the nervous and enjoyable “Gunfight”, where players can compete in 2 vs 2. So yes, some moments are a little too Hollywood-style, we feel the desire to impress of course, but that’s also what we expect from a Call of Duty and it does the job, whether in single player or multiplayer. Very very good! Speaking of Russia, this game is banned there due to its portrayal of Russia and I can’t fully blame them as the real life “Highway of Death” was an American led attack. While I realize this is a work of fiction, one of the most boring ways to develop a villain is to give them zero redeeming qualities as if they weren’t a person, but simply just evil. It’s a big issue in this game as to why Russian forces invade the fictional country of Urzikstan in the first place. I assume it is because the main villain wants to stop terrorism in Russia by a group called Al-Qatala, and if that is the case then he isn’t wrong because after the main campaign the spec-ops mode picks up with Russian and Allied forces teaming up to stop the Al-Qatala invasion of Russia. I say assume because it’s never really stated why he’s there and a little bit of self awareness could have done something really interesting with a plot echoing the American actions overseas.
