Carrying several messages, Sand Land tells of the improbable collaboration of a human with demons to save a population lacking water. The story takes place in a world plagued by drought and everyone tries to survive under an ever-burning sun. Meanwhile, the king of the country, supported by a strong army, takes advantage of the situation to sell bottles filled with the precious liquid at a high price. It is in this context that a sheriff, called Rao, decides to team up with a young demon, Beelzebub, and his old sidekick, the very amusing Thief. The man, who hides a dark past, is convinced that there is a source of water, somewhere, that can save everyone. In a near future – the exact year is not specified – the world will be just a single dusty planet . Wars have turned the blue planet into a desert and water is a scarce commodity. The apparently last water source belongs to the greedy king of Sand Land and he only gives out his expensive water at horrendous prices. At this point we will forego any spoilers. Later, however, we will discuss content that is not yet known from the manga, but happens quite early on in the anime. We won’t give any late-game spoilers – but let’s say this much: Anyone who has already watched the anime knows in which direction the game is roughly developing. Now back to the king and his water. The story of Sand Land is one of its strongest points. It has the same feeling of discovery and adventure that Akira Toriyama gave us with the first issues of Dragon Ball. Although the premise sounds like the resolution and the journey will be very simple and predictable, this is not the case, it has very good plot twists that keep you interested in following until the end. The story’s pull is even stronger thanks to its collection of main characters. Especially the initial quartet shares a very good chemistry that makes the entire trip enjoyable. Even in the end you come to love them and feel satisfaction from everything you experienced in their company. How to play? Sand Land is an open world action RPG. Most of the time we control Beelzebub or one of his many vehicles. While we control the prince we have a fairly simple hand-to-hand combat system. But it honestly isn’t used much throughout the story.
