Modern Warfare 3’s unusual makeup is immediately obvious in multiplayer. For the first time in series history, there are no original 6v6 maps at launch. Instead, Sledgehammer reached into the CoD vault and remade all 16 launch maps from the original Modern Warfare 2 (2009). This nostalgia payload was one of the first things announced about MW3, and damn it, it got me really excited. The cultural penetration of Call of Duty for teens of the late 2000s cannot be overstated, and MW2 was arguably its peak. Even as personal doubts around this year’s CoD simmered, I maintained that the warm embrace of maps I haven’t seen in 14 years could alone justify Modern Warfare 3’s existence. Eh, not really. I’m having a good time revisiting favorite maps, and I can’t say enough nice things about Sledgehammer’s attention to detail in crafting them. Terminal, Highrise, Favela, and Sub Base near-perfectly recapture the vibe of the originals. Maybe because so many of us already know these maps from those formative years we spent marauding through them with energy drinks at our sides, Modern Warfare 3 might be the most immediately sweaty Call of Duty I’ve played, though much of that impression could be laid on competitive-friendly updates to movement (more on that later). This sandbox approach doesn’t fit what I’m looking for in a Call of Duty single-player story at all, and feels at odds with what made the original Modern Warfare trilogy the height of cinematic shooters. More than ever, this year’s campaign bears an uncomfortable resemblance to its multiplayer companion. Firmament

Modern Warfare 3 even relies on the same mechanics – scavenging for better weapons and gear from stashes and tailoring your loadout at a drop box – communicated by a near-identical UI. If I wanted this, I’d just drop into the battle royale solo and run around opening boxes and fighting enemies that are actually interesting. It does give you a bit more freedom when it comes to approaching each mission as you scour weapons caches for new tools to do the job with. Choosing whether to go loud or quiet does create a veil of stamping your own style onto things, but no matter how stealthily you approach the situation you’re only really delaying the inevitable firefights against seemingly endlessly spawning enemies. And once you are spotted you’ll have a near-impossible job trying to lose them. Instead of the traditional round-based mode wherein you kill the undead to earn cash that can be spent to buy new guns or perks in a relatively linear environment, Treyarch which was seemingly randomly assigned to the project, has instead opted to make the franchise’s most enjoyable way to kill AI little more than a knock-off of the aforementioned Warzone. Each time you boot it up, you spawn in an open world with a few friends or randoms from online matchmaking, and are tasked with taking on and completing random quests in a huge map filled with other player squads, after which you need to extract with whatever gear you found. There are no rounds to survive, or doors to buy your way through, but are instead free to roam the map for as long as you want doing whatever you want until a 45-minute timer runs out or you voluntarily leave via a helicopter.
