A major part of what makes that journey special is its impressive scale. As soon as I set foot onto the Grasslands, the first of six regions that make up Rebirth, a sense of awe washed over me. Looking out over the far-reaching horizon or seeing a backdrop of vast and distant mountain ranges, I was stunned by how gorgeously the previously low-poly world of Final Fantasy VII had been reimagined. An early cutscene shows Aerith taking in the beauty of a natural world she was never able to see before, only to have Red XIII remind her that it’s still dying from the inside out. In doing so, the story reinforces the ongoing theme of environmental preservation from the outset, and instills that this is a planet worth fighting for. That’s a feeling that consistently surfaced as I went from region to region, connecting with the people of each one and helping with their struggles through both the main story and a huge amount of sidequests. The developers don’t tinker with the original’s formula so much that it could tarnish its legacy. However, they remain true to their approach in the first part and do not reproduce the already known story one-to-one in Rebirth either. Rebirth has even bigger differences in terms of story than Remake. Whether all fans will like it remains to be seen. For example, Zack, who dies before the events of the original game, plays a much larger and more important role in Rebirth than in the old version. The new scale also gives you more things to do in the game. Rebirth is still an action RPG, one with combat that’s a mashup of twitchy action and the turn-based stuff found in classic RPGs. (Basically, you can hack-and-slash your way through fights, but also pause to choose spells or special moves from a menu.) And the dungeons still largely force you through a series of tunnels with some light puzzle solving. But in between all of that is an expansive space that feels like a typically modern open world, not all that different from a Far Cry or Legend of Zelda. You explore to fill out your map, unlock towers to find new points of interest, and complete quests by killing rare beasts or… rounding up cute little Moogles. Pockets of greatness, like the fantastic Queen’s Blood card game or special Summon Shrines that lead to new powerful materia, are still great even when repeated throughout the world map. And where the standard area objectives rarely stray from the formula established early on, the side quests, which range from fine and forgettable to great, sprinkled throughout each region, provide levity and a nice touch of weirdness to the world of Cloud and his friends. One even had me laughing out loud at my screen, reeling from a reality check delivered right to Red XIII. Traversing these lands can be tedious at times, especially in areas where specific Chocobo mechanics, like mushroom-hopping and wind gliding, are required, and my frustrations with Rebirth’s overfilled open world peaked in these moments.
