Here’s the thing. Palworld may take its influences from other types of games or genres, but honestly, what games don’t or haven’t, over time? Even Pokemon wasn’t original in its ‘monster catching/using’ idea, it just happened to be the Oreo to the Oreo/Hydrox way of things. Hydrox was first, but Oreo became the big man on campus. That said, Palworld did something incredible in that this comparatively-small dev team proved that people were tired of Pokemon’s rehashing and phoning it in, and wanted a breath of fresh air to the genre, and it made the king, the giant of that genre, bleed, from its seemingly-invincible mountaintop throne. It cut, and it cut deep with the first strike, with the wants and needs of the fans of that genre all holding and slashing that sword with that initial blow. Is the game perfect? Not at all. It’s in Early Access. Things aren’t completely fleshed out, bugs are crawlin’ in the gears, even terrain in certain areas have their issues. And yet, with all the flaws and roughness around the edges, you see people diving in and loving every minute. When a game has its glaring issues and problems but you still have fans goin’ for it, accepting it with its warts and all, you know you’ve got the start of something that could be huge. Not only does Palworld give us a world to explore, it allows the players freedom in customizing their experiences from the start. When making a world you can set creature spawn, damage modifiers, changes to timers and building deterioration, stamina bar use, it goes on and on. “Here’s the world, make it comfortable for you and have fun.” You capture creatures to work and explore alongside you, you meet their needs as they help you with yours, you build bases from the ground up and make patches of the world your own. You’re not gonna find a deep story right now, you’re not gonna find engaging NPCs that draw you in deeper. What you’ll find is go in, capture, build, explore, and just enjoy doing it while trying to work around shortcomings and bugs that may be frustrating, but with some patience and grit, you’ll be ok. With all that, I just hope that Pocketpair actually stays with it. They’ve struck oil, but now’s the time to refine it further. If the devs can keep it up and listen well to the players while doing so, everyone’s gonna be in for a fantastic ride.
