Movement is not enjoyable, which I feel is the ultimate sin for a Metroidvania. The run feels slow, and with any amount of falling you pause on impact. Just enough to be hit by an enemy wandering around. You can get movement upgrades, but every jump requires you to hit the next platform at the exact peak of your jump height or the exact distance you can leap so each one can be frustrating if you miss and have to start a whole sequence again. This is compounded by how far about respawn and travel points are, so traversing and backtracking through the map takes forever. Combat can be equally frustrating. Only being able to shoot straight up or to the sides is standard for the genre, but your weapon has an extremely short range (maybe 1.5 character height) and coverage that tagging all the enemies that are placed just to knock you off a ledge becomes frustrating. Add in that the blaster knocks you back and platforming becomes even more iffy. There’s an enemy hovering in air over a platform I have to land on. I’ll shoot it in midair…. oh wait, now the knockback from the gun has put me short of the jump and I land in acid and have to do the whole sequence again and the enemy has respawned… cool. Finally you won’t be able to use most of the augments you get. There’s a very restrictive power system that only lets you equip a few at a time. And you can only swap them at respawn points.
