Coming from the Next Fest demo that I played, they’ve taken a lot of player feedback in order to make the game much more fast-paced, and all of the movements/attacks feel very smooth to work with. The game has much shorter runs than you would typically get out of another title in the genre, something like 15 minutes per run. 30 would be an absolute ceiling unless you’re trying to deliberately extend the run. The lack of time in each run is counterbalanced by picking beforehand from what are called “Tomes.” Basically, these decide the theme/major mechanics of the run, and some of the upgrades you can get for your team. In addition, once you have cleared a couple of tomes, you gain access to what are called “Bindings,” which act as the ramping difficulty (or Heat system if you prefer using Hades as your analogue for other games in the genre). The only major item I should point out is that the controller support is not currently as smooth as it could be, but the developer has already commented and said they’re going to be working on it. All of them have unique upgrades randomly available in missions. So you basically build a custom playstyle, and then in game actually get random upgrades for those things. It feels like a really good balance of player build choice, and roguelike random upgrades. Cry of Fear

You’ll still have a pretty strong idea of what you’ll be doing combat wise, but every run will be decently different. So far there aren’t a ton of generators and spenders and dashes, but they’ll be adding more over time. They also should prob make sure they’re balanced better, at the moment some of them feel underpowered. As far as missions go, each one is fairly different. In each, there are 5 regular levels and then a boss fight at the end. At the beginning of each “chapter”, you choose an upgrade for you, AND an enemy upgrade. So based on your build, you’ll want to think strategically about enemy upgrades (I.e. If you’re short ranged it’s not terrible to do less damage to ranged enemies at far distance, but if you’re HP only and vampiric, you REALLY don’t want enemies to limit your healing). Also, there are general difficulty modifiers that can be applied in any combination for any mission for added loot and difficulty (kind of like Bastion but more interesting). I’ve been running enhanced enemy buffs, enemies spawn zombies on death, fog, tougher lesser enemies, etc is polished, runs really smooth, has multiplayer!!!, great ratio of player choice and random stuff, mission customizations, well thought out meta progression, and also runs don’t take forever which makes it feel far more approachable.
