I’m sure if Helskate gets anything close to the level of success Palworld did, there will be discussions over how much it leans on the THPS formula, and whether Swink’s presence should be a mitigating factor there. I’m less sure that developer Phantom Coast wants every discussion of Helskate to start with ‘it’s like Tony Hawk’s’, but being similar to THPS is not a criticism. It’s not even ‘well we’re not getting THPS 5 anytime soon so this is the next best thing’. I see the familiarity not only as a core selling point for Helskate, but as a foundation to its uniqueness. You’ll also unlock tapes, stickers, and gear that grant you special abilities. For instance, one upgrade let me fire swarms of homing missiles whenever I did an indy grab. Other effects are passive, like a damage buff to your next attack whenever you pull off a specific grind. This all sounds pretty tubular in theory, dude. Radical, even. Though the reality left me feeling unsure of what Helskate actually wanted me to do. The problem I ran into is this: THPS is all about flow, but roguelikes are typically about weighing risk and reward, managing a limited supply of health while you brawl through a level with defence on your mind. Even action-heavy roguelikes such as Hades demand you balance aggression and evasion. Helskate wants you to tear asphalt, but it also wants you to stop and fight some guys. You get a dash and a lock-on function that lets you zag away from your tricks to deal with some demons, but any attempts to weave brawling with skating left me with a headache. Pure Onyx UNCENSORED 

I couldn’t just leave the demons alone, though. More than once, some giant bird monster would lunge from off-screen and smash me into bits while I was doing a Christ Air. And that’s just bad park etiquette, really. You can equip different boards to change up your weapons, too; something I did when replacing my melee weapon with one that gave me shurikens to throw at enemies instead. This felt a lot better for me – a man terrible at melee combat games in the first place – but there are several different attacks all tied to their own skateboards and it feels, much like Zagreus’s loadout in Hades, that every player will have their own favorite. This core loop already works well. Helskate already feels right when you’re skating around and there’s a nice balance to the grinds and manuals that make them feel easy to control even when you’re concentrating on dodging projectiles or homing in on enemies. Your opponents are well-designed too: you can grind along the back of a giant worm while bashing it repeatedly, for example. There’s also a giant boss that will let you ride up his arms to smash him in his big skeletal face. Helskate is a thrilling and innovative game that combines elements of skateboarding and fantasy. The game offers players a unique experience as they navigate through surreal landscapes and perform gravity-defying tricks. The game’s visuals are rich in detail, with vibrant colors and dynamic lighting effects that bring the fantasy world to life.
