Some games are highly compromised when played remotely, unless you can manage video of each player and minimal delay of the game stream, which can be tricky. Each round, all but one of the players will receive a prompt on their device to perform some kind of action, such as raise their right arm, while the remaining player will be told nothing but to try and fit in with the group. The timer counts down and all players perform the action, or at least try to fake it, before everyone votes for who they believe is the faker. Points are then allocated for finding the faker… or avoiding being found. The Nintendo Switch is chock full of potential multiplayer gaming memories already, however one game with many more possibilities is The Jackbox Party Pack 3. If you’re unfamiliar with the series, The Jackbox Party Pack is an exciting collection of accessible games that up to 8 people can play. It’s quite astonishing when played in a party environment, as the accessibility lies also in the controls, which are all utilized via a website you can reach on your phone. Anyone can drop in and start playing almost instantly via a room code; the convenience makes Jackbox a vital game in your Switch library. It’s just unfortunate that it’s held back by a couple of factors that can potentially break the experience for players. For starters, the games in the third Jackbox have decent variety. There are five games that will test anything from your pop culture knowledge to the eloquence you have when creating t-shirt designs. The 3rd Jackbox collection includes Quiplash 2, Trivia Murder Party, Guesspionage, Tee K.O., and Fakin’ It. Most games require at least 2-3 players and can support up to 8 players.

Quiplash 2 is one of the most notorious games in the collection, where you and up to 7 other players are given prompts and can respond in any way possible. The humour can go places which will have some reminiscing of Cards Against Humanity, and just like in that game players choose which responses to prompts were funnier. With games that take around 10-15 minutes at most it’s an incredible test of wits, and with a group of friends and the inclusion of in-jokes its one of the standout titles on the compilation. One drawback which can be seen in the other Jackbox games rears its ugly head in the most recent iteration. That is that many of the hosts and voice-work in this game have disappointing writing. A case in point is the host in Trivia Murder Party, which is certainly distracting. Trivia Murder Party is a pretty great trivia game otherwise, and whenever individuals miss a question they are required to do different minigames. Whether they test your memorization or math, it’s an interesting addition which makes the game stand out, even if the host can distract from the fun. Guesspionage also unfortunately exhibits the problem of a host that can come off as unfunny and slightly obnoxious, however it’s easily made enjoyable with the volume off. In it, you guess percentages that are based around surveys. It’s good fun. Sadly, Jackbox also requires Wi-Fi in order to play with your friends who are in the same room as you. Which means no Quiplash while on the road, or in any environment which isn’t accessible to the internet. You can definitely tether to a mobile phone hotspot (it thankfully uses only a small amount of mobile phone data), but your mileage may vary as you have to use your phone to select answers and some phones will slow down drastically alongside their quickly draining battery. Taking away from the score of Jackbox Party Pack 3, ultimately, is the unfortunate lack of execution on portability. If needed also make sure you have the family filter enabled, as a point of reference, as some questions and aspects of the humour are coarse and might be considered offensive. We also can’t recommend the game if you don’t have at least 3 other players, as it is exponentially better when played with a larger group of people. I initially doubted the viability of Nintendo’s elevator pitch in that first Nintendo Switch trailer. As much as I wanted to believe sexy 20-somethings could bring the Switch to hip rooftop parties, part of me couldn’t help but believe the memes that suggested this nerdiness wasn’t going to fly. Imagine my surprise when I, the lone nerd amongst a group of normies, brought his Switch out for what seemed like a normal night of dinner and general hangouts, to see it be a smash hit, particularly thanks to The Jackbox Party Pack 3; an amazing collection of phone based party games, perfect for any occasion (apparently). For those who are unaware, Jackbox Games first made their claim to fame with the irreverent trivia game You Don’t Know Jack, which was so popular it even got a brief TV show spin off. Since then, Jackbox has released several incredible party games. Included with The Jackbox Party Pack 3 are Quiplash 2: the game that’s a little like Cards Against Humanity where you’re given ridiculous prompts and you fill in the blanks with hilarious answers; Guesspionage: which is a bit of an interesting take on Family Feud where players try to guess the percentage of audience polled questions; Fakin’ It: where all but one players are given a “task” and the odd man out has to fake it or face the consequences!

Trivia Murder Party is a spooky challenge where players compete in trivia and mini-games to escape a deranged murderer, and finally, what was probably the most fun, there’s Tee K.O: a kung-fu themed drawing game where players create designs and slogans for t-shirts. The Jackbox Party Pack 3 was initially released last November, so I feel a review of these individual games would be a bit redundant. They’re excellent games, keeping with Jackbox’s consistent overall quality. However, what I would like to review is their place on the Nintendo Switch, and I have to say, I was incredibly impressed. The nature of the Party Packs’ gameplay, wherein the game itself is mostly run off jackbox.tv and players use their phones to input answers, or in the case of Tee K.O draw pictures, means that the platform acts as a catalyst to the actual game. In this regard, the game works unbelievably well on the Switch given its portability and general ease-of-use. During my experience with it, I took it with some friends to a local Mcdonald’s hoping to take advantage of the free WiFi and chow down on some late-night fries. However, when we learned it wasn’t a 24-hour Micky D’s and were quickly escorted out, we were able to set up in a friend’s car—the Switch standing on the dash, connected by a mobile hotspot; it was completely seamless. We all had a blast just sitting around, cracking jokes and enjoying the humour of the game itself. Also, with the questionable nature of the Switch’s battery, The Jackbox Party Pack 3 is pretty easy on the juice, taking less than 20 per cent after roughly an hour-and-a-half of playtime. However, it was not a totally perfect experience. Fakin’ It is a game, by design, that requires a larger space and would probably work better on the dock, and some of the more text-reliant elements of the game can be a bit problematic on the Switch’s small screen. While a lot of this is alleviated by so much of the game being centred on mobile, it does reduce a bit of the game’s convenience. Granted these are incredibly small complaints. The Jackbox Party Pack 3 is an excellent collection of games perfect for parties, made even better now that you can conveniently take that party anywhere with the Switch. A fun pack of games to play with anyone, anywhere (with Wi-Fi) Over the past decade Nintendo has been known to offer players many ways to play casual games with anyone. Now the Nintendo Switch has arrived, and Jackbox Games has given us an interesting and unique pack of party games to help entertain our friends and families. Though some of the games are better than the rest, JPP3 offers a group of delightfully imaginative games that would be a great compliment to any party. Jackbox Party Pack 3 is an interesting experience, especially on the Switch. All five of the games not only require a wifi connection, but also a web browser of some sort for each player’s controller. (These can be from a phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) “Why can’t you just use the JoyCons?”, you may be asking. The reason is because each player needs their own touchscreen for not only privacy, but also to write answers and to draw pictures. It just couldn’t work correctly on a standard controller, but luckily Jackbox Games made it as easy as possible for anyone to hop in and enjoy.

Guesspionage

When playing through these games, something that really stood out to me was just how crisp and nice the game looked. When playing on either the TV or on the Console Screen, all of the colors and words really pop out and look great. The audio throughout the game is also top-notch, with most games having thorough voice narration and great genre-based music selections. An important thing to remember is that anyone can have fun with these games, but be careful to apply the Family Friendly filter if you are playing with kids, for some of the gags can get pretty raunchy.Plants VS Zombies Garden Warfare PC Game

The developers built in a neat feature for people who are streaming Jackbox Party Pack 3. Once a game has started, anyone (up to 10,000 people) can join in and participate as a combined audience and help influence the game in different ways. When playing at huge gatherings or conventions, this feature is very cool and allows for a lot of people to join in on the fun.

Out of the 5 games that JPP3 offers one of the standout games is “Quiplash 2”. Like the rest of the games in the pack, this one really makes you flex your creative and/or comedic muscles. It tasks you and each of your friends with coming up with answers to random questions, and the goal is to get the other people to vote for your unique answer. This usually ends up in mountains of laughter, and makes for a great time to exploit all of your groups’ in-jokes. The game’s formula of three rounds works well, and depending on the size of your group one game takes around 15-25 minutes. Again, this was by far everyone’s favorite of the JPP3 in our group. “Fakin’ It” is a quirky little game with a fun premise that didn’t quite end up working as well as I thought it would. The idea is giving everybody (except one, “the Faker”) a question to answer with various hand gestures (raising your hand, holding a certain number of fingers, etc.). Although the Faker doesn’t know the question, they need to act like they do and convince people that they do. This concept seems to work better with 5-6 people playing rather than 3-4, but no matter what we had fun with it.

“Guesspionage” is a game based around guessing the percentages of surveyed people about random facts (think Family Feud). Some
examples are “What percentage of people have split logs into firewood with axes?” Or “What percentage of people have done the Chicken Dance at wedding receptions?” Your goal is to guess the percentage as close as you can to the actual percent, and the people who aren’t guessing get to chime in after and also try to score points. The game’s structure is solid and flows well, although this title does have a lot of “funny talking host guy” throughout, and their jokes can be hit or miss.
