In Nine Season 2009, you will take part in short lap spurts involving storylines from each individual race of that season. If you drive a car, as many do, it is almost a shock how different it is to steer a vehicle with four wheels compared to two. Techniques that can be used when controlling a car will not work at all in MotoGP. Braking at the last second and turning sharply will lead to the bike doing the opposite of what you would want. MotoGP 22 is a game that has a steep learning curve for newcomers, but it always feels rewarding when starting to grasp motorcycle racing in these games, and very much so in this year’s title.

But ‘NINE Season 2009’ – yes, that is its awkward name – is something not yet seen in a MotoGP game and is complementary to the expected gameplay elements. This is a documentary covering Valentino Rossi’s ninth MotoGP title, hence the name, mixing archive footage, voice-over work by Mark Neale of the Faster, Faster & Faster and Fastest films and you re-living particular moments on track in-game. It starts with a context-setting scene like a TV programme, before handing you the controls for at least two scenarios per race from that year. This handily covers the growing trend in racing games for stories, such as Braking Point in F1 2021 or Driven to Glory in GRID Legends, but also conveniently adds some Rossi-related content. Let us not forget, this is the first game Italian-developer Milestone has ever created without The Doctor included, such was the length of his motorcycle career. Taking a cue from another racing series, Milestone has included what is equivalent to the Circuit Experience in Gran Turismo with the MotoGP Academy. This will have you racing against time for medals through separate segments of each circuit on the game. The idea is to get racers to learn each circuit, which is a nice addition to add playtime outside of the main modes. Milestone has also upgraded its Tutorial to allow some deeper explanation of braking points, apex approaches and other advanced maneuvers to bring new riders along to competitive levels. Milestone has also added an Adaptive Difficulty System to help guide new users to find their perfect way to compete and succeed. While I believe there could be a deeper explanation of how braking works (rear versus front) and the proper way to accelerate without gunning the throttle, what’s here for teaching new users is much improved. With the Neural AI A.N.N.A. advancing even more this year, this allows for players to keep up and have some great racing against the AI. There are still issues with the opponents knowing where you are on the track. I’ve seen riders take the wrong racing line or overshoot a corner due to being under pressure, but I’ve also had riders run into full speed into the back of me. Their lap times and pacing are accurate and seeing how they flow and race is nice, but the biggest issue still sits with their surroundings awareness. Because this is a series that is released every year, there will be no particularly big differences from year to year. While playing, I couldn’t feel any difference from the game I played last year when it comes to physics or feel. But with the MotoGP series, you know what you’re getting. Namely a competent MotoGP simulator experience. The game does what is expected of it, neither more nor less.

EVERY DETAIL UNDER CONTROL

You can start in either Moto3 or Moto2 to fight your way up to the class where the very best compete, MotoGP, or you can simply start directly in the highest class. There is also an opportunity to build your small team around you with engineers and mechanics. These can unlock better performance on different parts. It’s not a very deep part of the game, but it’s at least something to do other than just run race after race. Because that’s what it’s all about in the end, to run a race and do as well as possible. But the fact is that there is a small mini-game here. It is possible to create a kind of farming team in the lower classes and to take care of them in a managerial position. You can hire or fire engineers, fix sponsors, and so on. On the whole, the career situation is the same as last year, good but not great. I much prefer this factual style to the fictionalised approach of the contemporaries, and the mix of footage and gameplay is seamlessly integrated, flowing from one race to the next. Sometimes, however, the challenges are poorly paced. Five laps in the lead on your own around Losail, to begin with, is a momentum sap. It mostly hangs together, that being said, and focussing on the Rossi vs Lorenzo, Pedrosa and Stoner arch is satisfying. 2009’s fourth round was at Le Mans’ Bugatti Circuit and featured a flag to flag race with changeable weather conditions. NINE sets you up with the weather context, shows you Rossi falling into the gravel and hands you over to his teammate Lorenzo who is trying to stay upright with slick tyres on a damp track. The racing feels more realistic than in the past and there’s a great focus on tyre wear. The tyre model has been updated with a much more noticeable drop in grip when degrading. Players on the PlayStation 5 can also use the DualSense Motion to mimic the bike handling and the Adaptive Triggers work better than before. This includes feeling the brakes actually lock up or the tyres break loose. Braking does seem inconsistent, but this can be tied into the wear of the parts and the temperature. You need to brake early going into corners and while the racing line assistant is explained in the tutorial, it’s still off when knowing where to brake. Racing surfaces have also been updated to allow for a smoother riding experience and suspension has been retooled to focus on curbs. These are more than subtle upgrades to the bike handling, but they aren’t completely overhauling the model. This does allow for more confident racing than in the past.

PLAN YOUR GAME

These changes play a substantial part to separating this version in comparison to the past. What else is here is left over from last year, though. While the Managerial Career remains one of the deepest single player modes in racing games, there are no major changes this year. You can start a team or join a team in any MotoGP league, build the brand, and start in Winter Testing to see what package to deploy for the season. You will develop the bike with R&D throughout the season and an issue still remains where I don’t know what engineer I’m assigning to a technology is being pulled from. The game doesn’t tell you what engineers are available and which aren’t. Racing calendars can be customized this year, but ultimately this is the exact same mode. The newest addition, and perhaps the best part of this game, is a kind of story mode that follows the 2009 season. For those like me, who are not so well versed in the sport, the game does a great job of telling us what is so special about it, who the most important riders are, and what led up to this tough season. From Valentino Rossi’s dominance, to Casey Stoner’s successes and various rivalries and tough injuries that ruined the entire season. It’s a really great introduction and I felt, right after the short introductory video, that I had a full understanding of who the four main characters (Rossi, Stoner, Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedroza) were. Except, when you take control, it’s a dry, not drying, track because MotoGP 22 can’t simulate mixed conditions. You either have dry, or wet, but the circuits don’t evolve. A clanger that robs vital immersion. It’s strange too because the developers also create the road-bike-based Ride 4 which uses the same technology and does feature dynamic weather and pitlane visits. Other features added in last season’s MotoGP 21 such as the long lap penalty and bike retrieval once again return, but sadly have not evolved as expected. With the latter, you must walk back and pick up your motorcycle should you fall off, but your AI-controlled rivals can simply respawn with wanton abandon while you’re still wandering the grass verges, rendering this feature largely redundant. Other modes that carry over for 2022 are a single championship, grand prix and time trial. For online multiplayer, there remains a lobby system and nothing deeper than this. There are still no online championships or anything that keeps the online aspect engaged. Milestone has added cross play this year, so this should add to the number of players out there. Splitscreen has also been added for local multiplayer racing, but this also goes no deeper than that.

What else is starting to age are the visual and the aesthetics. Milestone has added new 3D animations to faces to allow more emotions be shown during cutscenes. This doesn’t translate to the bikes or the tracks, though. The player models feel dated and while the bikes and rider gear do stand out thanks to the lighting and reflections, there are plenty of old assets that can be seen around the track. There’s 3D grass in areas, but others look can look plain ugly. While touches have been made to make it run at a higher resolution and 60 FPS, nothing pushes the bar on what feels like an ancient engine. At times, this game can look good and others can have it crashing back to earth. The soundtrack remains dramatic and fantastic with varying music playing in different areas. The voiceovers that are in the game are solid. While each bike sounds different, it feels that this is another aspect that needs to be updated. The bikes sound solid enough, but with a game like RiMS showing just how well sound can be done, the bike sounds are getting outdated.
