Monopoly Plus Dislikes Let’s get some of the negativity out of the way first since there is more than usual for this game. Almost all the negative reviews I’ve seen concern the multiplayer game. Since this site likes to focus on the single-player aspect of a game that’s really not too much of an issue for us, but since there seems to be an overwhelming dislike of the multiplayer option it’s worth mentioning. Another thing I dislike is being forced to sign-up for a Uplay account. I know most of the major companies have that option, but it is an option, not a requirement. You shouldn’t have to create an account to play a game you’ve already paid for! The user interface is a little vague and counterintuitive. By that I mean keys are used as shortcuts that are not normally used and they are not clearly identified in the game. For example, to select some of the options you need to use a key that shown in the interface as an UP arrow with not text or tooltip to identify it. So, is it the up arrow key in the cluster of the four arrow keys grouped together or the up arrow key on the num pad? If it is on the num pad does num lock need to be on for it to work? Oh, it’s the shift key you say, which doesn’t happen to have any kind of arrow key on it, at least not on my keyboard? It’s inattention to the little details like this that stop this from being a really good interface. I occasionally have trouble getting the game to launch properly. Sometimes it will start minimized in the background. I have other games that occasionally do that and all I need to do is click on the icon at the bottom of the screen and it springs to life. Not so with this game, my cursor moves about halfway down the screen then acts like it hit a wall. I need to totally shut down the game and start over.

A real living board

A few other things not to like is the lack of various playing boards to choose from and you can only select one custom rule set at a time instead of several. And the idea of having to select the language every time you start the game is pretty annoying. Monopoly Plus Likes With a start like this you’d think I really hate the game, but I don’t. The living board is a really good board with good animations, and the rest of the animations in the game are good as well. The narrator is really a good addition, without him the game would be a little boring. He might be annoying sometimes but I still think he adds to the game. Despite all the drawbacks I found the game itself to be fun. The AI enforces the rules fairly and there’s no cheating banker to deal with! It’s easy to see what properties you have and if they’re mortgaged. This game does manage to capture the true gaming experience of playing a game of Monopoly. I think the animated graphics add a special touch to the game. They definitely provide some amusement while waiting for the AIs to take their turns. The pace is pretty good for this game, I finished my first game with three AI players in one hour and ten minutes. Not bad since some games I’ve played in the past with other people have drug on for hours. The fact that the auction rule is used (I used to always ignore that) and the fact that the AI players will make a deal almost always, no matter how bad it might be for one side (we were notorious for not dealing in our games) speeds the game up a lot. And despite only being able to choose one special set of house rules at a time they still add some flavor to the game. I turned on the snake eyes option that pays a player $1,000 when two ones are rolled since I’m so unlucky at throwing dice. The dice gods must have been watching, I never did throw snake eyes although some of the AI players did A version of the game that I never heard of before was Speed Die, which has a special third die. After the player completes the first trip around the board the third die is added to the player’s dice roll. If a 1, 2, or 3 is rolled it is added to the total of the two white dice. So, if a 5 and 4 are rolled on the white die and a 2 is rolled on the speed die then the player moves a total of 11 spaces. If a Bus is rolled on the speed die, then a player can choose to move using just one of the dice or both. If a 3 and a 4 are rolled, for example, then the player can move 3, 4, or 7 spaces. If Mr. Monopoly turns up a player plays out his turn normally using the white dice. At the end of the turn the player goes to the next unowned property and either buys it or puts it up for auction. In case all the properties are owned the player goes to the next property that isn’t his and pays rent. One other special variant in this game is that if triples are rolled (same number on all three dice) the player can move to any space on the board. If you tell anyone outside of the gaming community that one of your hobbies is ‘board games’, the inevitable next question you’ll hear is “Oh, like Monopoly?”

Play the way you want

It’s unbelievably ubiquitous even now, 86 years after it was first released. Several generations of players have been introduced to it throughout their childhoods – it shows no sign of going anywhere. Which is weird, because Monopoly as a game is, by modern standards, full of absolutely terrible mechanics and design decisions. It’s a game that’s simultaneously hugely popular and synonymous with board gaming itself while being reviled by nearly everyone who ends up playing it. It has a reputation for simply taking too long to play, for example, as well as featuring player elimination that can cause losing players to just sit around twiddling their thumbs, sometimes for hours, while the remainder of the game plays out. A clear winner can emerge relatively quickly, but due to the random nature of the game it can still take a really long time for them to actually win. There’s also that just-mentioned random nature of the game: your turns can often feel as if they’re dictated by the whim of the dice, rather than by any meaningful or strategic decisions you make during play. Yet you will find that games go on too long mostly due to house rules that players swear are the official rules (a number of times as a kid, I played with people from different households who were convinced that ‘tax money going on free parking’ was an actual rule – yet this keeps money in the game’s economy that should be taken out, thus extending play time significantly). Or they ignore rules that would help to speed the game up, such as the auctions that should take place if a player decides not to buy a property. On my last few points regarding randomness and the lack of strategy: if that’s the case, how could there be Monopoly World Championships with participants who consistently do well at the game? So perhaps a combination of misunderstanding the rules and a lack of understanding of some of the strategies that can be employed (which also includes smart trading of properties) are to blame for the general malaise surrounding the game. Saying that, player elimination is the one overriding problem that can’t be overcome using this reasoning – as is the general lack of strategic control over the game – so while you can recognise that there’s a certain amount that can be ‘fixed’ in order to ensure that your Monopoly experience is as enjoyable as possible, the fact remains that there’s still lots about the game that remains problematic in this day and age, when so many thousands of other games exist that cater for gamers of different skill levels, ages and tastes, at bewilderingly different levels of complexity. Monopoly Plus then, is a game that does well to translate the basic feel of the game into the digital realm – and does an awful lot right too. Speaking of interactivity

As well as the option of playing in multiplayer or with bots in any combination required. The presentation is faultless too, with a lovely 3D representation of the board that makes it seem both alive and physical, with the throw of the dice affecting player tokens in a way that gives it a really satisfying and tangible feel. Sound effects and music are nicely implemented – and there’s an array of bizarre premium DLC boards that tie into the fact that UbiSoft have produced this version of the game – including Just Dance and Rabbids, along with a My Little Pony board too. Each feature animated tokens that give an extra layer of charm, but none alter the basic feel of Monopoly (which is also the case when you buy any standard Monopoly variant in real life of course – though efforts have been made in recent years to change that a bit, with the Gamer and Arcade variants being notable in bringing some new, more refined and innovative design elements to the tabletop) It can feel a little slow when you’re up against AI players as there’s little in the way of accelerating through their turns, but having the option to save a number of different games at a time is very welcome. Trading takes a little getting used to, but once you understand the controls it’s a pretty painless way of handling that aspect of the game. Online multiplayer is a bit trickier, not because of the online interaction with other players, but because of issues with the way the host communicates with other consoles. Although there are no major connection issues and servers work properly, the host player has all the power in the game, because, if he quits, the game automatically ends, instead of being redirected to another player. This is very annoying, especially when a host player is rage quitting. The silver lining, perhaps, is the server’s stability, mainly because some game can reach up to 4 hours at a single sitting. Graphics in this game are very sophisticated. If you choose to play the traditional board, you’ll get a rather innocent look at the traditional board of the game, but if you choose to play in the living board, you’ll get a fully functional 3D board resembling an actual city, with a lot of things happening at the same time. Even the character tokens are animated and have sound while moving. This is a very appealing aspect of the game, because it makes it far more interactive than the game ever was. the game also allows you to customize your very own board. This function allows player to add destinations, decorations and even to name the different locations in the game.

If you are looking for a different version of Monopoly that has never been invented (good luck with that), then this is your chance, because there is no better game than the one you can create by yourself. Music, however, is not that adequate, as it becomes rather boring and repetitive after a few minutes, just like the quirky audio comments of the game’s narrator. The game itself feels well-crafted and really takes back to family and friends reunions for playing monopoly. For a game that has been in existence for the better part of a century, Monopoly Plus shows players the franchise still has a lot to offer and, for those who, inexplicably, still haven’t played a single monopoly game, is the perfect chance to get into this classic. There is, however a lingering question that needs to be tackled: are board games meant to be played as video games? Purists of both genres would say board games are meant to stay on the table and video games on the consoles, but examples like Tabletopia or Settlers of Catan on Xbox Live and its unsounded success are clear examples that both type of games can coexist and, furthermore, feed off of each other and increase a game’s popularity. There is no need to choose one or the other, when both options are on the table.So, if you’re looking for a fun party game, for when people visit or even while you’re on your own and want to connect with someone else.
