The boss fights that pop up every few battles are fun and challenging, and there is enough variety in these to keep them interesting through to the end of the game. Mastering the timing of your dodge and block commands is the key to victory, but it will probably take at least two attempts to get the boss’ unique pattern down. There are even some excellent visuals mixed into the combat sequences that make them remarkably satisfying. The vibrant colours and iconic monsters that Dragon Quest has always been known for are all here and look great on the Switch. If Infinity Strash had focused solely on being an action RPG, it would be an easy one to recommend. There isn’t anything groundbreaking in the combat here, but it is competently put together and fun when you get to play. There are a few small nitpicks with the combat, like an unwieldy camera and a mini-map that is next to useless, but this is still by far the best part of this game. What really struck me about Infinity Strash‘s storytelling is how rushed the beginning of the game feels compared to the rest of the chapters. I hardly played more than 20 minutes by the time Hadlar showed up for his showdown with Avan. This is a problem because Avan’s death and Dai’s desire to avenge him is the central driving force of the plot. From Space

Had I not read the beginning of the manga series prior to playing the game, I would have found it difficult to care at all or buy into the mentor/student bond between Dai and Avan. By comparison, most of the other story arcs feel drawn out, with copious amounts of dialogue (fully voiced) over static images taken from the anime the other two were A Hero’s Bonds (a mobile game that shut down earlier this year) and Xross Blade (an arcade game). This console project is probably the one that relied the most on the anime’s development timeline though. While the other two could be continually updated over time as the anime revealed new character and monster designs, Infinity Strash needed to have a set end to give its developers enough of a lead time to release it in a timely manner that wasn’t too far off from the show’s finale in late 2022. This reliance on the anime’s production has fundamentally crippled Infinity Strash unfortunately. Of course, not everyone who picks up Infinity Strash will be a fan of The Adventure of Dai already. Infinity Strash has to account for newcomers who don’t know anything about its story and characters. Sadly, the game presents these in one of the most uninteresting and boring ways imaginable – through a plethora of vignettes filled with screenshots from the anime. REDSTORY and the Last Glimmer
