The opening of the game sees a pink and a yellow colored gibbon ape leaving their home alongside their blue offspring on a journey to find a new place. On their adventure, you learn about the hardships they face and why the gibbon apes have become endangered species. The game does have a small narrative that serves the purpose of presenting you with different scenarios and circumstances through which you have to guide the pink gibbon. There’s no dialogue or text to communicate the story, and I found the use of visual storytelling quite fitting and pleasing.The actual gameplay sees you swinging, climbing and sliding alongside tree branches, wires and vines to cross gaps, gain speed, and jump your way to safety. You only use two buttons for controlling the gibbon; since the game is an auto-scroller, you can run, slid,e and jump with the L-button, while holding down the R-button causes the gibbon to grab onto objects to swing itself forward. Letting go of the R-button helps you gain momentum in order to pick up speed and height. The flow can feel quite nice, especially once you combine it with other techniques you pick up along the way like a backflip that gives you an additional speed boost.However, this is also where I really started to notice the major issues with the game. Slowdown, especially in the latter half of the game, became incredibly frequent. The game is seemingly unable to keep up with the speed of the gibbon as more and more visuals are introduced on screen. Additionally, the game opens with an almost 50-second long loading screen. I also found that the responsiveness of the controls was incredibly lacking. I often found myself letting go of branches far too early or not even latching onto new swingable surfaces when pressing the R-button again after letting go for a swing. This really became annoying in levels where precision and acceleration became key to clearing big jumps without getting a game over. While the gameplay already became quite repetitive halfway through, these unresponsive controls killed most of the enjoyment I had at the beginning of the game.

A struggled swing towards survival

Gibbon Beyond the Trees has simple yet effective gameplay. You control “Pink”, an adult gibbon traversing the Indonesian jungle with its husband, Yellow, and daughter, Lilac. The trio swings run and jump through the trees in a linear side-scrolling fashion. The developers mentioned that the game simulates the way gibbons swing in real life and I think they did a great job. Moving throughout the forest is easy but I did encounter some hiccups when I pressed jump and I got delayed for a bit. Some assets that are “swingable” are not that visible too so I missed some of them. The game is all about maintaining momentum. Go slow and you lose speed, but once you get going the “brachiation” or moving from one branch to another is phenomenal. Sliding and jumping are smooth too. Don’t forget to mix and match both movement options for more speed. The controls are easy. You can control Pink using the mouse alone or by using the keyboard. I tried all possible control options and by far, using the mouse or the keyboard is the best. At first, I tried using a controller but despite indicating full controller support on Steam, I could not make it work. It reads my controller but it disconnects and would never work again. Developed and published by Broken Rules, this is a poignant side-scrolling adventure title. It depicts the survival of a family of Gibbons who attempt to escape the clutches of humans. With no spoken dialogue, you must explore the emotion through actions and images, and this will make it resonate with everyone. I’m fascinated by the animal kingdom and our impact on it. Therefore, this was the perfect game for me to review. Not only does it take you on a harrowing journey, but it highlights the beauty of these magnificent beasts. You’ll explore 10 chapters of lush jungle, horrendous logging, and cold cities. Furthermore, you’ll be hunted by mindless thugs as you attempt to protect your family. Every chapter flows wonderfully as you swing through dense canopies while grabbing vines, branches, and treetops. What’s more, you can use your partner to soar to new heights as you assist each other through this acrobatic journey. On top of this, you’ll learn to backflip, slide, and run to escape your tormentors. Timing is everything, and death and failure are just around the corner. Consequently, you must be agile, think fast, and plan ahead as you race past the beautiful and barren landscape.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees has a short one hour story that is captivating from beginning to end. The relationship between the family is touching, and you’ll be desperate for them to survive. I won’t ruin the plot, but it takes you on an emotional roller-coaster. I cherished the simplicity of the story and the range of emotions you’ll experience. You’ll admire the athleticism of the Gibbons and detest the loggers and hunters. I rarely experience such brilliance in a short title, but this game has it all. Now, you may worry that a one-hour playthrough isn’t enough. Frankly, I agree! Luckily, though, there is a second option to tackle after the dust has settled. You can enjoy every chapter again in the “Liberation” mode. Here you must swoop through trees while finding the caged animals. Sounds easy, right? Unfortunately, it isn’t as you must locate them and hit their cages to free them. If you miss them, they remain locked up and you must revisit the chapter again. In theory, this wasn’t a bad thing. In reality, it felt a little padded out and was tiresome once you missed for the nth time. A checkpoint system would have alleviated this pain, but the developers failed to incorporate this option. If this was added retrospectively, the game would be vastly improved. Assetto Corsa

Having ultra-realistic and high-fidelity graphics is amazing. However, sometimes it’s not essential. Gibbon: Beyond the Trees proves this with its simple but beautiful approach. The wide variety of landscapes, vivid and natural colour palette, and free-flowing movement are great to look at. You’ll admire the lush jungle while being horrified by the destructive fires and felled trees. What’s more, the cold juxtaposed city landscapes highlight the plight of these endangered creatures even further. The game’s stark imagery does wonders in driving home the reality of the situation without being too preachy. This is continued with the spine-tingling audio. The calm and emotive music is combined with dramatic heavy moments. Each different element tells the unique parts of the story without the use of text. This was a fantastic choice as you easily became immersed in the ever-changing world. Alongside this, the excellent environmental sounds and cruel everyday human noises add to the beauty and brutality of the gameplay. With the choice of keyboard or gamepad, Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is extremely user-friendly. I chose the latter option and found it to be responsive and easy to understand. Swinging, sliding, and completing backflips were done with a simple push of a button. Yes, timing everything to perfection was tough, but that makes the action much more rewarding. Once you’ve experienced the main story and explored the Liberation mode, there isn’t much else to do. Sadly, this does impact the longevity and the replay value. If the developers can expand the base game with some procedurally generated levels, this would keep you going. Alternatively, some unique challenges would demand you return and this is something that should be explored.

Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is heartwarming.

You’d have to be a heartless monster to not enjoy this game. Its story is touching, uncomfortably realistic, and a damming representation of mankind. Consequently, I loved its wake up call and its beautiful aesthetic. It pushes its message without being preachy and is a gem of an indie title. I adored it and I recommend you to buy it here! Can you save your family or is the damage already done? In terms of gameplay, Beyond the Trees is a joy to experience. As the gibbon, you swing through trees and across ravines, timing your swings to build as much momentum as possible. It’s not groundbreaking, but it has an unbelievably good game feel. Timing swings perfectly, pulling a trick to get a small boost, or performing a long slide down a dusty hill before leaping off the edge feels like playing something more akin to Tony Hawk than anything else. The key bit of magic that Beyond the Trees has is the way the story and the gameplay intertwine. Swinging through the trees of a thick forest feels slick, fast, and playful. But then suddenly it doesn’t. As you see machinery in the distance, the forest starts to thin, and swinging becomes slightly harder.

It keeps getting harder throughout until the forest is barely there. Your fingers have engaged with the magic of the thick forest, the joy of swinging through the trees, and now they can’t. It feels like you’ve physically lost something, and there’s nothing you can do. Some of my favourite games pull off this trick, and it isn’t as easy as it sounds, but Beyond the Trees succeeds palpably. Outside of story and gameplay, Beyond the Trees is wholeheartedly a full and polished package. The visuals are strikingly gorgeous, whether it’s the colourful foliage or the bustling towns, there’s an atmosphere captured in every scene depicted. The way the gibbons themselves are animated is also beautifully playful, and they endeared themselves to me very quickly. Helping this is the excellent sound design, capturing the gibbon’s call and the forest’s rustling just as well as the whirr of machinery and the racket of a crowd. The detail is striking throughout. But once in the city, you can hear the clink of metal or the rubbing of fabric and everything in between. The attention to detail is surprising no matter what, but it’s particularly impressive for a game made by a team of fourteen people. There’s so much care that’s gone into every inch of the game, and it’s most clear when it ends. After giving you so much enjoyment and emotion, the developer Broken Rules makes clear the danger that gibbons face, shows a list of organisations actively helping the endangered species, and does all of this without feeling imposing. Instead, it feels deeply personal, which helps you connect to the developer. These kinds of projects can have a lot of issues. Sometimes they rely on shock tactics to scare you into seeing what’s wrong. Sometimes they feel so personal that one individual gets in the way of making an experience that’s actually enjoyable. But sometimes these projects hit hard, mostly because of the quality with which they’re delivered, but also because of the simplicity with which they make an issue clear. Gibbon: Beyond the Trees is important. Not just because it has an urgent message, but also because it shows the power of a videogame to impact reality. Games can be whatever they want, but it’s really special when they highlight real-world issues and allow us to connect to them in a way no other medium can. The magic of videogames to immerse you in a universe puts them in a unique position to raise awareness, and Beyond the Trees does exactly that without really putting a foot wrong. It may be short, but it doesn’t need to be a second longer. It succeeds at exactly what it’s trying to do.
