While the vehicles here are monster trucks, the gameplay is akin to the many kart racers available, albeit slower. One button accelerates, though an auto-drive function can be enabled to make things simpler, and while there is a brake button, it’s largely redundant. Most corners can be tackled at full speed, and those that can’t are easily dealt with via the game’s drift button – you even get a burst of speed upon exiting a corner if you drift for long enough. I have to remind you that, if you’re above the age of six, you will not like Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers, and that’s by design. This is not a game for us. Between its ultra-simplistic controls, lack of randomized powerups, and being taught physics trivia during the game’s loading screens (I actually liked that, to be honest), this is meant to be a toddler’s introduction to the kart racing genre. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The game has three difficulty settings and a gradual difficulty curve, which are beyond easy for us and even the little ones, but not patronizing at all. I will start off with the positives. I actually liked the track design in Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers, despite the lack of challenge in pretty much all of them. Hell, the last track in the game is a NASCAR-esque oval. But it’s tailor made to gradually teach kids how to properly drift in a kart racer, before they graduate to Mario Kart territory. I’m fine with that. I also liked the lack of randomized powerups, with each character only having one special move activated once you collect ten wrenches scattered throughout the track. Axle City Racers is a very simple racing game. In single-player you play against 7 AI-controlled trucks with the goal to come first. If a player does drop behind in the race the game has pretty forgiving rubberbanding mechanics (this is where the AI players kinda slow down giving the player a chance to catch up). Before you start, the lead character of the show runs the player through a helpful tutorial walking the player through the game’s mechanics. Littering the track are boost pads, catapulting players into the air at an increased pace for a bit of excitement. There are also spanners encased in green orbs; collect ten of those and your monster truck’s special ability can be activated, generally boosting them forward at speed while knocking other competitors out of the way. It’s simple but entertaining stuff. The main game mode in Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axel City Racers is Adventure, where players will make their way through three championships before taking on the final event. If that doesn’t sound like much it’s because there is indeed not much to it. Overall there are just ten events – all straight-up races – and players are likely to make their way through them in less than an hour. This includes steering, drifting and reversing. The game does also teach some fun stuff to the player, like beeping the horn which will no doubt bring a little smile to a young mind. Controls have been simplified. This is not a game designed for a player to struggle with. Mastering drifting will help get a speed boost but it’s not essential to success. If the player does happen to get stuck or hit a wall you can tap a button to restart back on the race track. Crying Suns
