Since there isn’t a progression system that’s universal (other than cards) you’re going to be doing crit chance, crit damage, and any other damage passive. The only deviation is playing a different character and getting the passive to evolve their weapon. AOE is king. If you do not have a proper AOE weapon, you will get overwhelmed and die. You also need the damage, hence the above. To get S rank, you need to kill the boss in seconds. Hence why the “damage only” meta is further making builds stale. Kill the boss in seconds, get a  ton of coins, kill a lot of enemies. All focused on AoE and damage.
