Considering these are the same folks behind the sim-y Need for Speed: Shift games, it’s no surprise these mean racing machines are generally responsive and handle well at high speed. Though each of the 50+ unlockable rides drive differently, three adjustable driving model presets let you tweak the overall physics and realism level to suit your skill. The novice setup offers maximum handholding to keep casual players from careening off the track. In contrast, engaging pro mode doesn’t quite crank all of the realism dials to 11 like in some other racing sims, yet it does make it tricky enough to put veteran gear-heads through their paces. The campaign ditches the open world flow of Test Drive Unlimited in favor of more traditional closed-circuit tracks and a minimalist story that plays out almost entirely through informative but unexciting menu text. It feels like a few steps backwards for the genre, but widely ranging objectives save the day. In addition to standard races, you’ll face off against rivals, work to stay behind a partner racer within a three second window, shoot to beat specific lap times, and work to overtake all other cars on the track. While this variety helps switch things up, other areas of gameplay sometimes feel a little too by-the-book. You won’t find much of the flashiness of other modern racers here either. Ferrari Racing Legends pushes authenticity and simplicity over style both in its presentation and gameplay. As crazy as some of the tougher courses can get, they’re less visually dynamic than the off-road terrain and urban vistas of similar genre entries. An impressive number of race events are spread out across three separate campaigns that tackle different eras of Ferrari history and do a masterful job of showcasing the evolution in car designs over the years. With its cool sepia-faded intros, older classic cars, and more accessible courses, the Golden era (1947-1973) stretch is the most enjoyable. Unfortunately, Ferrari Racing Legends derails in its Silver (1974-1990) and Modern (1990-2011) era portions.

Extensive Online Competition

Even if you have everything dialed back to their most forgiving settings, these latter campaigns are simply brutal, delivering a jarring spike in difficulty early-on that will rapidly whittle away the patience of even the most skilled drivers. Prepare to suffer agonizing failure over and over again, even with seemingly spectacular runs. A good 50 models, ranging from classics such as the Ferrari 125 S (1947) and the iconic Ferrari Testarossa (1984) to modern sports cars such as the Ferrari 458 Italia and Ferrari 150° Italia Monoposto – it’s not just the Tifosi who get excited. Even the red formula cars from different decades have found their way into the clear but high-quality vehicle, which not only looks great, but also sounds the same with its robust engine hum. Unfortunately, you can’t stage the dreamy cars in a photo mode and capture them in recordings, but at least the repetitions can be saved.As beautiful as all the models look, the developers pass up the opportunity to deal with the evolution of the sports car in more detail. There is no further information on the vehicles other than year of manufacture and top speed, although there would certainly be some interesting facts and stories to tell about each of them. Here I am, for example, again racing down the long straight from the Hockenheimring at full throttle through the forest or paying a visit to the French piste Rouen from the 1950s. Occasionally pop-ups and flickering edges are annoying, but the scenes are quite impressive, although technically you can’t keep up with Forza, Gran Turismo and even Shift 2. In addition, the Xbox 360 version in particular suffers from sometimes severe drops in frame rate when you are in a maximum starting field of 16 drivers. What’s more, the picture here usually looks too dark, regardless of the selected time of day (morning, midday, evening) – especially in direct comparison with the PS3 counterpart. On the Sony console you have to put up with a forced installation, but in return you get a smoother gaming experience than on the 360, although steering wheels (including the clutch!) are supported on both platforms in addition to the controller.

The road cars offer an equally eclectic collection, tracing a line from the 166 Inter through to the 458 Italia, though naturally there will always be some heartbreaking omissions. The absence of the 162 sharknose, perhaps the most visually striking Ferrari ever produced, is saddening if understandable given that the originals were all broken down, none surviving Enzo’s insistence that the most beautiful car is the one that’s waiting on the production line. If Test Drive: Ferrari’s car list is superb, its track list is better yet. It’s not enough to boast the right cars without giving them a proper playground to be tested in, and here Slightly Mad has really excelled. There are the usual suspects in the form of the Nordschleife, Catalunya and Monaco, but there are some inspiring additions: Rouen, a series of broad sweeps that cut through the countryside of northern France, is a rare treat. Monza’s also available in its pre-chicane configuration, reverting to the high-speed loop it once was, and Hockenheim is restored to its 20th-century glory

Silverstone, meanwhile, is peeled back layer by layer until its roots as an improvised sprint across a Northamptonshire airfield are revealed. Being able to pair the right car with the right track is a masterstroke (even if there’s some disparity between the luscious car models and the spartan trackside detail). The flat, fast expanse of a ’50s-era Silverstone makes so much more sense when trying to induce a four-wheel drift from a front-engined single-seater, while the Woodcote chicane briefly introduced in the ’70s is so much more entertaining when you’re desperately trying to thread the squat 312 T4 through it. Some ferocious handling helps in that regard, too. Slightly Mad has already proven that it likes to create a driving experience that bites back, its two Shift games often feeling more like survival horror as they shoveled on the scares. Test Drive Ferrari reins that in, and even if the handling is a little overstated, it’s a much more refined ride. Cars need to be taken by the scruff of the neck but they respond well to a little rough treatment, rewarding you with long, gracious slides. Odd, then, that it’s so erratically implicated. With the pro handling model unlocked, Test Drive: Ferrari is a handful, but it’s also a delight. Scale things back a little and it suffers from the curious problem of becoming harder to play – driving aids mute the feel and ladle on understeer, making a half-decent lap a test of patience rather than one of reflex and steel. All of which makes a hard game even harder. Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends provides an erratic and all-too-often infuriating challenge, its difficulty level rising to the point where it becomes near-insurmountable after only a handful of hours. A campaign is spread across Golden, Silver and Modern eras, each one of them offering a chronological journey through the marque’s rich history. They’re cutely presented as well, threaded together with short and surprisingly imaginative bursts of narrative. In the ’50s you’re a test driver that rises through the ranks, while in the ’80s you’re a driver for hire who at one point has to showcase a Ferrari 308 GTS for a handful of TV executives working on a show in Hawaii. There’s charm, but not nearly enough to atone for how quickly the odds are stacked against you, amateur drivers being placed in races where an absent-minded nerf from an AI opponent can quickly negate 10 minutes of inch-perfect driving. An insistence on locking away nearly all of Test Drive: Ferrari’s content makes it all the more painful. A weak and, at present, unpopulated online mode ensures there’s little alternative to the grind.All the more disappointing given that there’s so much Test Drive: Ferrari gets right. Its machines are capable of providing the purest of thrills, a tail-happy moment in its exotica translating the heritage and appeal of the brand into one lurid flash of gameplay.

That’s a shame, because when you’re not running up against these frustrating constraints, driving these cars can be a pleasure. Ferrari Racing Legends isn’t one of the most visually impressive racing games on the market, but the beauty inherent in Ferrari’s designs makes the cars attractive, and many of the track locations are picturesque. Of course, one Ferrari can handle very differently from another–a 1948 166 Inter that tops out at 125 miles per hour feels quite different from a 1995 F50 that can hit 202mph–but they’re all extremely quick and responsive. This is a simulation, not an arcade racer. It takes skill to guide these cars around tracks in good time, and until you learn to tame them, driving these powerful machines can be frustrating at times; it’s very easy to head into turns too fast and lose control. An optional racing line can help you handle those corners, and a good assortment of views (including a cockpit view) lets you find a perspective you’re comfortable with. A convincing sense of speed and the authentic whines and roars of engines can transport you to the racetrack, and there are moments when you get completely caught up in the experience of racing. But compared to other simulation racers, the Ferrari Racing Legends experience is frustratingly uncustomizable. There are five driving assists, including steering help and braking help, but you can’t turn these on or off independently.
