Starsand is a brand new survival game entering Early Access. What separates it is that, yup, it’s in a desert. Well, there’s more to it, but that’s mainly accurate. It’s not exactly the first desert survival game, but it’s going to pique the curiosity of some folks all the same. The game is set to stay in early access until at least Summer of 2022, and it’ll receive a full storyline, as well as more areas and gameplay attributes. But the question stands: is Starsand worth it in Early Access? The story setup in Starsand is currently delivered by a bit of text over a black screen. You were running a desert marathon, but ended up separated. After entering a small building to take shelter from a sandstorm, you find yourself in a completely unknown location and have to start moving if you wants to stay alive. However, things are more than they seem. This, of course, is based around following a series of guided tasks that require you to craft new items and find food and water. Since Starsand takes place in a desert, it’s a little different than many similar games. For one, there are massive expanses of nothing. Sand dunes stretch out toward the horizon with the burning sun taunting you as the sweat pours down your face. The game has a temperature meter and when it goes over a certain threshold, your character becomes overheated and sweat literally rolls down the camera.

Find shade, find water, find life.

It’s a nice touch. The game does a good job of selling just how desperate a situation this is, too. Your first order of business is to craft a crude knife with rocks, which you’ll end up dismantling because it’s basically worthless. You can dismantle all crafted items to return a certain amount of whatever you used to make them. Shortly thereafter, I was tasked with destroying a plant to get materials to make a stone axe. Only, I misunderstood one of the necessary components for something that I needed to find and not something I needed to craft. This led me to run forward into the vast nothingness until I happened to find an oasis. There are many features and tools to help you survive. You have a bottle at your disposal in Starsand, which you’ll fill with water. You can also eat various fruits or hunt animals for their meat to cook on campfires. The game only lets you save at a constructed shelter, though. I ended up making the oasis my first camp, as it had plenty of food and water to keep me alive for a while. It also had many palm trees, which you can either climb or cut down for their fruit. You’ll also craft weapons which you can use to fight some… well, there’s no point in giving away the surprise. Starsand‘s goals can lack direction, though, as it often doesn’t give you much of an indication of how to do a thing you’re supposed to do. It doesn’t take long for the game to have you set to building your first wooden base, but figuring out how to actually add a door to the foundations isn’t the most obvious thing in the world. As for whether I recommend it, I’d say that Starsand is currently worth it if you’re looking for a solid desert survival game, and especially if you want a bit of an otherworldly twist. Even when bearing in mind a not-so-surprising pivot, it isn’t all that different from other survival games. It has most of what we’re used to in games like this, and it performs adequately on top of it. You could certainly do much worse. The genre of survival games is constantly growing and is producing a number of gems. After all, survival crafting adventure games offer a wide range of tasks and things to discover and do. Starsand also fits into this genre, which wants to convince with an interesting setting and mechanics. We checked out the game for you. At the beginning we are marathon runners in the desert. Equipped only with suitable clothing as a runner and a water bottle, we get caught in a sandstorm and are just able to escape to a nearby house. Here we collapse exhausted and wake up the next day. But both the walls and the entire environment around us looks strange and seems to have changed.

Find your way in the vast and lonely desert

In the first steps we will now get to know the various basic functions and thus come to the first oasis. On the way to this first oasis we will learn the most important steps to ensure our survival and to build a shelter. Throughout the game I had the feeling that you want to give the player a lot of freedom. Certainly there are tasks that describe the different ones, but the core is discovering the game world. The walking distances between the oases are sometimes really long, which is good and healthy preparationrequired so that we don’t starve or die of thirst here on the way. The adrenaline rises quickly when, after a fight against strange beings, you are starving to death and you see the next dunes in front of you, not knowing what is behind them. Orientation in the world only takes place through self-made objects – if we want to set a marker, we build it first. There is also no save point – the game can only be saved in beds or tents, which of course we have to build beforehand. In order to reduce the walking distances later in the game, there is the possibility of taming animals. That’s right toolow inventory of your own character is supplemented by the camels because saddlebags can be attached. And we need plenty of resources to expand or relocate not only our equipment, but also our shelter. But combat is also easier with a mount, since you simply move faster and more safely with a bow at a distance of a few meters. This tactic then saved me in a number of situations, as I was able to outrun an enemy that was a bit too strong by simply riding up and away.Basically, my recommendation would be to look for a riding opportunity as soon as possible, otherwise you will feel a certain frustration early on. While on foot everything is a kind of gamble, whether you get somewhere safely, with a mount the probability is much higher. As soon as the transport is secured, the really exciting core of the game begins: exploring. We can discover some exciting places in the game. Added to this is the feeling of being a real explorer and defying nature. Compared to other survival games, the selection of recipes, weapons and armor seems a bit small. However, it should not be forgotten that we are still talking about an Early Access title. The developers are busy updating, which definitely speaks for the game. There is also a roadmap, which I personally always prefer for early access games – unfortunately not every game has one. So the plan for the current quarter of 2022 is to improve the possibilities with camels, introduce new metal tools and also binoculars. These new items and opportunities would further advance the game well. New opponents and a new terrain are announced for quarter two; so it will be exciting to see how the game develops.

The map in the game is probably my favourite aspect of it. There is nothing on the map to tell you where you currently are, or which way you’re facing, and the only marks on the map are ones you put there. You can build markers in the game that will then add a symbol to the map, and you can always add oases, ruins or other points of interest to the map at your leisure. I mean, you don’t know exactly where on the map you are or where they are but you’ll probably get them in about the right place. Getting turned about and losing your bearings in Starsand can be absolutely lethal. Dotted about in the sand are various places of interest to discover; many with valuable resources and others with something even more intriguing; a slice of the mystery behind where you are and what happened here. My playtime wasn’t enough to discover much by way of the storyline of Starsand but the taster I had was enough to make me want to see more and to find more of the ruins that would both reveal the story, and provide new items to craft. Starsand is in its first early access release and so it is quite understandably a little limited in the crafting options. I didn’t discover most of what was in the game but the unfound recipes are visible in the crafting menu in silhouette, so I have some idea of the number of recipes there are to find. That, in itself, is not a problem though
