Hollow Knight, though, is arguably the most striking of the lot. Team Cherry’s platform-adventure has long been awaited by Switch owners in the know. The game has attracted considerable buzz – and no small amount of fan art – since its PC debut last year. Now Hollow Knight has taken its console bow, and it doesn’t disappoint. You take control of the titular knight, a tiny bug warrior in an insectoid world gone to seed. The art style might be cartoony, but this is a surprisingly mournful setting from the off. The once-mighty kingdom of Hallownest has crumbled, its communities either abandoned or driven mad. All but a few lingering eccentrics have disappeared into the ground, drawn downwards by a mysterious miasma. It’s a beautifully melancholic canvas onto which you must gradually paint in the details. In time-honoured Metroidvania fashion, that involves venturing into the unknown to map out the world, conquering lumbering bosses, and expanding your ability set so that you can access new areas. Structurally, then, Hollow Knight doesn’t offer much that’s new, but it’s in the execution that it really shines. At the core of the game is a crunchy sword-and-magic combat system. Our knight might carry a so-called ‘needle’, but this spindly blade lands with a heck of a thwack. The recoil from each hit sends both you and your enemy back a little, which is both empowering and potentially endangering – particularly when battle takes place in the midst of a precarious platforming section. Thankfully, the movement system is just as tight. Whether you’re using the left Joy-Con stick or the D-pad on the Switch Pro Controller, our hero responds beautifully. It’s no great spoiler to reveal that one of the first abilities you acquire is a dash, and this quickly becomes a staple part of your calculations throughout your adventure. It grants you extra speed on the floor and additional range and manoeuvrability in mid-air. Your magical abilities are fuelled by a smart system that feeds on the souls of defeated enemies. Given that your knight’s first magical ability is to heal himself, it means that the best form of defence really is attack in Hollow Knight. Not that you can afford to be too gung-ho about your business. This is a challenging game, with many of the regular grunts employing unorthodox movements and lighting-quick attacks to cause you headaches – particularly in combination. The bosses, meanwhile, will have you failing repeatedly with their formidable health bars and varied attacks.

Elegy for Hallownest

There’s a Dark Souls-like system at play here too, which means that you’ll drop your soul along with all of your Geo (the game’s currency) when you die. You’ll need to backtrack and literally fight your own spirit to regain them. To explain what really sets Hollow Knight apart from pretty much anything else on the eShop, though, we need to go back to its world design. This is a decidedly 2D game, but it’s so thick with detail, shade and texture that it feels positively three-dimensional. The world is full of items and foreground elements that exist only to be broken or smashed through, adding to an enthralling sense of physicality – and it all runs at a silky smooth frame rate in both docked and portable modes. BThe sound design is equally inspired, from the dank drip of a drizzly city to the distinctive (and hilariously human) babble of its characters. The map maker’s contented hum and a certain boss’s prideful goading when you near his lair are particular stand-outs. Like Yoku’s Island Express and Celeste before it, Hollow Knight feels like it’s found its natural home on Switch. The game’s beautiful 2D world, tactile combat and impressive bevy of secrets constantly drag you in for more, and it proves to be as strong an experience on the move as it is on your TV. Hollow Knight is not new. Or, at least, it is not on PC, where players have been enjoying it for more than a year -since February 2017-, a period that has helped it achieve cult game status. It’s surprising we haven’t seen it on too many lists of the best games of 2017 . Or maybe not, because I know for a fact that a lot of people have been waiting for the Switch version (someday we should talk about that strange effect that makes indie games more appealing on the hybrid console). A wait that has been worth it, because after finally being able to play Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch , the feeling remains that they are made for each other. First of all we have to answer the most basic question: what is Hollow Knight ? It is a ‘ metroidvania’ -style 2D action and platform game , that is, it makes use of an open world, but bounded by obstacles that cannot be overcome until the appropriate skill is obtained. But defining it that way would be doing Hollow Knight a disservice, because we’re talking about the game that best represents this style; it is the most ‘metroidvania’ that has ever been done. The problem with many of the titles that fit into this genre is that it’s often easy to see the seams: we start exploring a region and suddenly two paths open up; in one we find a barrier that prevents us from continuing, while in the other we can continue advancing.

Bug and beast

A false illusion of freedom in games that promise exploration and adventure, but could well be described as linear. Making a good ‘metroidvania’ requires a large and complex world, which shines for its level design; a world in which its creators have taken into account all the possibilities that each ability opens up, regardless of the order of acquisition; and a world that does not require a specific path to follow to adapt to the demands of the script. Shortly after starting you will find yourself with the same dilemma of the two paths, only instead of a block, you will discover that it is possible to continue advancing on both. And that, far from stopping, each one gives access to a new area. Then, instead of two possible routes, you will have three. And so continuously. Hallownest is a world that seems to have no end, it never stops growing, and it does so without resorting to tricks like procedural generation. This gives the player an (unfortunately) atypical feeling that can easily be misinterpreted as negative: it’s called being lost, and it’s something that any game of this style should aspire to. passing through gloomy cities and tunnels of darkness that can be a real problem if you suffer from anxiety or claustrophobia. But in addition to a good structure, that feeling of freedom, of being able to go anywhere, at any time, and that there is always something new waiting to be discovered, can only be achieved with an interesting world, that has a rich background and that hides treasures, collectibles, characters and all kinds of secrets. It is often criticized that in the press we are not able to talk about anything without mentioning Dark Souls , but it would be enormously irresponsible not to mention the FromSoftware gem when reviewing Hollow Knight . Because Team Cherry is almost certainly the first studio to realize that what makes Dark Souls great isn’t its difficulty. No, what makes Dark Souls -and Hollow Knight- great is its world, a post-apocalyptic world where we are strangers who are drawn by the need to find out what happened, why we are there and – above all – who we are in reality. And they do this with subtlety, telling or teaching just enough so that we feel like continuing to explore and discover; generating interest. An interest that over time gives characters and events a mythological aspect, as if we were really listening to stories of old legends in a forgotten world.

Very painful gameplay

Of course, and for the most attentive, touches of environmental narrative are not lacking either. If you’re scared of “I haven’t heard anything,” you’ll be happy to know that Hollow Knight ‘s story isn’t nearly as obtuse as From’s game. Despite the subtlety of its narration and the fact that there are still many pieces that need to be put together and/or interpreted (that’s the beauty, really), by the end of the story you will have a pretty good idea of ​​what has happened. And what a story, by the way. Don’t let the fact that it’s a game starring insects cloud your perception: this is a story of legendary knights and once-glorious kingdoms; of ancestral beings, magic and impossible loves; of the most hidden dreams and despicable creatures; a story of sacrifice, emptiness and deep sadness. Don’t let the fact that it’s an indie game fool you either, because Hollow Knight is as long as a day without bread. Reaching the end can easily take 20 hours, and if you intend to explore every corner and reach 107%, the duration is multiplied. The good thing about being released by surprise during E3 2018, and that it is not a new game that has to be analyzed in a hurry, is that it has allowed me to take all (or almost) the time in the world, which translates into that the counter shows, at this moment, 47 hours and 27 minutes. Hollow Knight manages to conquer even before we dive into the depths of Hallownest. One touch is enough to realize that it is one of those titles that are a pleasure to play, thanks to silky -fine controls that respond perfectly. Something very necessary in a work that highly values ​​precision, whether it’s dodging attacks, dodging puddles of acid or bouncing off enemies with a stinger. To give you an idea, there are parts where it becomes a platform challenge in the purest Super Meat Boy or Celeste style . Hollow Knight presents a pretty decent challenge. It never becomes impossible or desperate (except in the platform challenges, but they are optional and are designed to make us suffer), and when we die -again with our eyes fixed on Dark Souls- we are given a second chance, being able to return to the place where we dropped to try to get our geo (Hallowest’s coin) back. However, there is a small catch: what we leave behind, our regrets, takes the form of a dark spirit that must be defeated, adding extra tension. Hallownest is inhabited by more than 140 different types of enemies. And not only their numbers are impressive: everyone, even the smallest insect, has a very specific attack pattern or behavior. In most cases it is still something simple that is discovered as soon as we pay attention, but in the case of bosses it requires study and practice.

Given the (really) open-ended nature of Hollow Knight , if a boss chokes us we have two options: The first is to come back later, when we’ve gained new abilities and upgrades. The second is to try to defeat him with the clothes on. This can lead to some of the best moments of the adventure, as we encounter battles that require pinpoint precision. When we manage to master them, they become a spectacle worth seeing in motion, resembling more a carefully choreographed dance than a traditional confrontation. But for traditional, the last stretch: do you remember that time when the end of a video game -boss included- was the ultimate challenge? Well, you are going to have a fabulous time with what Hollow Knight hides. The satisfaction when seeing the credits is immeasurable. Hollow Knight doesn’t live only on inspiration, he also dares to put a couple of very interesting ideas on the table, starting with an intelligent magic system where the SOUL (mana), which is obtained by hitting enemies, is used both to perform spells to heal. This translates into having to assess in the midst of complicated situations when it is worth booking and when to attack with everything. On the other hand we have a selection of more than 40 charms, each with unique properties and effects, which can alter the way you play, adding a layer of customization.
