The hero (and thus the good) triumphs in spectacular fashion over all odds, no matter how great, as the story progresses around him with insane revenge constellations prevented ethical and moral collateral damage. Evil is always so evil that everything seems allowed. Spec Ops: The Line initially also lures with simple patterns, but only to quickly throw them overboard. Yager has snagged the classic film Apocalypse Now, but shifted the plot adapted for Spec Ops into a fictional and admittedly badly bent contemporary scenario, which initially has nothing to do with war: the swanky city of Dubai is destroyed by sandstorms of apocalyptic proportions and the rest isolated from the world. One almost wants to believe in the wrath of God, who wants to sand this pimple of decadence off the face of the world. A certain Colonel Konrad, freshly proclaimed a hero in Afghanistan, volunteers with his battalion for the humanitarian mission: securing the crisis area, protecting the civilian population from looters, all that. But contact with Konrad breaks off, and there was no sign of life from Dubai for weeks.

Small decisions

One thinks everyone is long dead, until suddenly a single radio message penetrates the wall of sand and prompts the US Army to send a reconnaissance squad to Dubai. There are only three men to keep further losses as small as possible: Captain Walker and his two subordinates Lugo and Adams. What begins as a typical buddy adventure film with casual sayings quickly deforms into something that one would otherwise only expect from ambitious films à la The Thin Red Line or Apocalypse Now. Walker and Co quickly find out that Konrad, celebrated as a hero, and his men did a lot, but certainly not what was actually intended, namely protecting the civilian population and preparing for an evacuation. People die in The Line, even civilians get caught in the line of fire – here Yager doesn’t skimp on shocking scenes in which even women and children die. These images are difficult to digest and do not fail to have an effect: you no longer feel like a hero, but like a perpetrator. This can also be seen in the three protagonists: in the course of the six to seven hour campaign, the “heroes” change, they become cold-hearted, brutal – you experience how the men literally break down from the violence. And so the game leaves a bitter aftertaste – which is exactly what Yager’s authors intended. Even if The Line has practically zero fresh ideas, the core of the game is fine: you shoot, take cover, collect weapons, fend off the enemy masses – all this is tried and tested, has been there umpteen times.

He saw so many players that he froze

That’s probably what you could say about most shooters these days. The point of criticism “poor ideas” is of course not without reason in our contra list (next page). But a lack of innovations or not, you shouldn’t deny the game’s qualities either: Spec Ops: The Line is a rock-solid cover shooter that’s fun to shoot – and that’s the main thing. Several times in the course of the game there are moments of decision where you have to choose between the life of a civilian or that of an informant. Although these scenes have no influence on the course of the game, they at least pretend that you can steer the story to a certain extent – for a one-time playthrough, that’s enough as an illusion. Still, it’s gratifying that someone was thinking about multiplayer. Ideas with different classes, which use perks to create buffs for allies and debuffs for opponents, as well as incorporating the environment into one, otherwise standard mode, are nice. In such games, the question is always whether to create a sufficient community in multiplayer. Anyway, I’m going to look at the mulcher again in a week or two and assess both the technical side of the game, ie whether those annoying bugs have been eliminated, as well as the community. Will there be any serious error in the system of professions and perks? Unfortunately, you won’t find out in a day or three.
