The only hope for the other sailing citizens is if two tiny fish people sail into the darkness and stop the evil ruling the sea at its source. That’s where you and a buddy come in, so prepare the cannons and get on the boat already. When you set off on your adventure you’re presented with a hexagon based map of the sea, full of little symbols that show you what you’ll get if you travel there. Each time you move to a new hexagon a wave of wet nasties will emerge from the depths, and you’ll need to protect the boat if you want to keep afloat. Combat in Ship of Fools involves loading your cannons full of whatever ammo you have on deck, and blasting the enemies before they have a chance to deal any damage. The birds, fish and crabs that want to pluck you out of the ocean can approach from either side of the boat, so you’ll need to pick up and carry the cannons between sides (or orchestrate your offense as a team) to take them all out. What’s really clever about Ship of Fools is that the enemies almost never directly damage your ship, and instead either move in close before striking, giving you an opportunity to repel them with your paddle, or leave a pile of fire on the deck for you to waft out. This means when things get a bit hectic you’ll both be running around trying to put out fires while the enemies keep wailing on you, and the sheer panic is honestly exhilarating. If you do take damage you’ll need to repair it with wood, which can be found on your travels. Other loose collectables include sand dollars to spend in stores, shields that give you temporary health and harpoons which you can use to pluck loot out of the ocean. Keeping these supplies at hand is key if you want to complete a successful run and fix the Great Lighthouse, so try to choose the path that gets you the best supplies. Yes I said successful run. You see Ship of fools is actually a roguelike. Now before this sends you running for the hills, there’s plenty of permanent upgrades that will make you feel the power boost even in failure. This also means that every time you set off there’s a new experience awaiting you. Who knows what you’ll find on your adventure to slowly upgrade your ship this time. It’s all part of the fun. The main difference in each run comes in the form of the ammo types you find. Each type of projectile you find has a different benefit, from rapid fire ammo that doesn’t need reloading as much, to piercing ammo that can take down crowds with ease. My favourite were the oil barrels that soak foes with a weakening oil that means they take even more damage after the first hit.

There are also passive upgrades you can add to the ship (giving you things like more health or extra money over time) and bombs that have a limited use. Each power up you find has to sit on one of the pedestals on your ship before you move onto the next hexagon though, or it’ll fall into the briny depths as you speed off. This means you’re always making tough decisions of what upgrades are more important, and it led to some big discussions when we thought a run could be “the one”. Against some of the tougher enemies and bosses you’ll really need to have your pedestals in order, because this game gets tricky. There are enemies that stun your characters if you don’t dodge roll through their lasers (leaving the ship to get battered in your absence) enemies that send smaller minions onto your ship that need taking care of, and even enemies that try to move your items around. Getting used to the variety of evils in each of the games’ zones will take some doing, but once you know what’s coming you’ll be prepared to save the day. There are plenty of other elements I could wax lyrical about too. I could talk about the trinkets that provide passive buffs to a single one of your characters. I could talk about the different cannon types you unlock as you progress further into the runs. I could even talk about the nice variety of unlockable characters and the clever ways you have to unlock them. You’ll need it, because it’s easy to get overwhelmed – particularly when your ship is being attacked from both sides. If you’re in co-op, you’ll still only have two cannons: one for each character. Maybe you’ll both want to man your own cannons, or maybe one of you will shoot while the other is on ammo or melee duty. Working together and coming up with a strategy is absolutely key to success in Ship of Fools. No run is ever wasted, because as we mentioned above, you’ll earn upgrade tokens which can be used to improve your cannons, buy new items, increase your health and more. You’ll likely need to have a decent number of upgrades under your belt before you make any serious progress. You see, there are a number of areas to make your way through, and each one is bookended with a boss fight. These bosses don’t go easy on you, and you’ll need to go in prepared. Success feels sweet – but it’s always hard-earned. As you progress, you’ll meet new characters along the way who can help you out on your mission. It’s not until you’ve beat the first boss that you meet the blacksmith who can upgrade your cannons and provide you with new ones, for example. It gives the game a nice sense of progression: there’s always something to push forward for, and it never gets stale. That’s also helped by the fact that, like many roguelikes, the maps you find yourself navigating in Ship of Fools are random. You’ll encounter different combinations of enemies, come across random islands with chests, loot or shops, and have opportunities to earn money, repair your ship and more.

We absolutely adore the art style of Ship of Fools. A hand-drawn animation style, the characters, enemies and environments look absolutely delightful. The colour palette is often muted thanks to the murkiness of being out at sea, but it works to create a cohesive atmosphere that really fits the feel of the game. We’ve been playing on PS5, and it’s silky-smooth too, making it an absolute pleasure to play. Attacks, whether melee or cannon-fired, are responsive and so you know that, if you fail to hit an enemy, you’ve only got yourself to blame. Ship of Fools is fun to play in single player, but in co-op it absolutely shines. It’s clear it’s been built with co-op in mind, and thankfully you can play locally or online. Either way is a lot of fun, and teamwork is absolutely essential if you want to succeed. Playing with a friend you know well is definitely recommended over a random: you will need to talk to each other to plan a strategy if you want any hope of coming out on top. By yourself, your auto-firing cannon is a lifeline, but you’ll still need to be in multiple places at once, constantly reloading cannons, firing them, melee-attacking enemies and doing what you can to survive. It quickly gets overwhelming, particularly as you progress to tougher levels. Team 17 has brought us some absolutely fantastic roguelike games in recent years, such as Rogue Heroes and Neon Abyss. With Ship of Fools, both genres are combined, mixed together to make an absolutely excellent seafaring adventure that we’ve struggled to put down. This was our experience with Ship of Fools, a game that mixes super-simplified naval combat with micro-managerial resource management, all with roguelite mechanics. Developed by Fika Productions and published by Team 17, Ship of Fools is perfect for having fun together by lining up shipment after shipment in the hope of getting further and further. It is a roguelite, a type of game that differs from roguelikes in that dying does not mean losing any progress made. In fact, between one game and another, you can improve your equipment with the resources of the previous expedition and continue with the story. In this Ship of Fools review we will analyze how the developers have managed to build a unique and familiar experience thanks to their very personal way of mixing videogame genres. The result is a light-hearted adventure, but one that doesn’t get boring even if at times a few drops of frustration have been felt. The only ones brave enough to challenge monsters and hurricanes are the Folli (fools in English) who, with their ship, the Stormstrider, embark on very risky expeditions to find out what happened and try to put things right. Players will be able to take on the role of one of ten Crazy, anthropomorphic sea creatures, each with a unique characteristic. The first two that are available are Todd and Hink , the first has as a bonus ability a greater speed in melee attacks, the second instead adds area damage to the projectiles of its cannons. Each of the other eight characters has a unique characteristic, but in order for them to join your crew you’ll need to unlock them first. Some are hidden on islands, others are lost at sea and you will have to rescue them. There are skills of all kinds, from combat to resource management; thus, there’s really a lot of choice when it comes to customizing your play style. Another intriguing feature of Ship of Fools is that your characters cannot die. To determine the end of an expedition, in fact, is the sinking of the ship which occurs when the life points run out. The goal of the Fools is precisely to protect the Stormstrider with cannon shots and oars (for close combat) by shooting spiders, octopuses, mosquitoes and any other creature that wants to harm her. Inspired by modern classic roguelites and built for co-op, you’ll want to bring your first mate on deck and enjoy oarsome combat as you unlock new trinkets and artifacts to help you save the world from catastrophe. Uncover lost treasures and remote shops on the islands of the Archipelago, but plan your moves carefully! As you chart your way through the sector, the Everlasting Storm shifts and changes, blocking your paths with its fury. You’ll need to adjust your course in reaction to storm movements and decide when you can brave a trip to discover what lurks inside the storm. I should also mention the lovely visuals and sensational soundtrack too. The cartoony aesthetic is absolutely charming, and each fish-based NPC you meet just oozes character. The soundtrack is also undoubtedly one of the best of any game this year, with catchy tunes for each world and some absolutely killer boss themes to top it off. Ship of Fools really is the total package. Ship of Fools does have one issue though that means we ended up stopping playing it after we beat the game. Once you get to the point of beating the final boss consistently the runs will start to feel a bit repetitive. Sure the upgrades you get are different, but all the enemy types and bosses are the same no matter what happens, and with only three worlds to explore you’ll be used to them all before you know it. Ship of Fools is a fantastic co-op roguelike full of tense battles and tough decisions. Learning how to best all the enemies and what upgrades are the best is exciting from start to finish, and the audio and visuals are top notch. It’s a bit of a shame that you can master it as quickly as you can, but when the screen fills with enemies and the boat fills with holes it’s an exhillerating experience you’ll want to share with your loved ones.
