Up until this point, the Resident Evil games were slower-paced, zombie-plotted affairs; Resident Evil 4 gave the series a shot of adrenaline that it so desperately needed. Although the game is unsettling and downright spooky, it’s much more combat-focused in regard to its storytelling and gameplay. Built like an action movie from start to finish, the game is full of over-the-top moments and cheesy quips, delivered so earnestly that its corniness becomes charming. Many of the original story beats remain intact, down to specific dialogue lines. Relive the nightmare that revolutionized survival horror. Longtime fans will surely appreciate the respect for the past, but they should also set their expectations. Resident Evil 4 remains a strikingly modern title, so there’s not much rebuilding to be done; instead, Capcom astutely polishes and streamlines the experience. That’s not to say there aren’t tons of changes to the game’s overall structure—there are plenty. In a way, Capcom recreates Resident Evil 4 as it exists in your mind’s eye, daisy-chaining every memorable moment, puzzle, and set piece from the original game, leaving little downtime. This applies to characterization, too. In the original game, each antagonist was more outlandish than the last, while Leon, Ashley, and the supporting cast faced terror with calm and cool resolve. In the remake, Leon still maintains that cool resolve, but we now see the kindhearted cop from Resident Evil 2 under the surface. Likewise, Ashley is rightfully terrified by the circumstances and slowly grows emboldened by Leon’s bravery.
