Midtown Madness Free Download Unfitgirl Driving games remain a mostly unexplored frontier. Flight simulators give you the whole countryside, spaceflight simulators give you the galaxy, but most driving games give you about six tracks. With few exceptions, in driving games you never really get the sense of freedom that the motor vehicle, in that ideal world as portrayed in car commercials, is supposed to provide. That’s why Midtown Madness, because of its ambitious scope, stands poised to redefine the genre’s standards: The game doesn’t contain traditional tracks, so much as the entire city of Chicago mapped out by the block, complete with all its famous landmarks from the Sears Tower to Wrigley Field. The city lives and breathes rather like the real thing, with variable traffic and weather conditions, pedestrians, traffic lights, cops, and freeways. And you get to drive wherever you want within the windy city, and however you want. Although its driving mechanics aren’t terribly sophisticated, it can be a lot of fun because it affords you that very freedom that all driving games should but rarely deliver. You get to drive a wide assortment of real-world vehicles, from the frightfully popular Volkswagen New Beetle to the luxurious 1999 Cadillac El Dorado. You can also unlock a bevy of unusual machines, from a city bus to a souped-up Ford Mustang police car. Unfitgirl.COM SEXY GAMES

All these cars handle and sound different from one another (you even hear warning beeps when the bus goes in reverse), and although the game plays best from a third-person view, you can switch to a unique first-person dashboard view, complete with steering wheel and tachometer but no rearview mirrors. There’s also a great wide-screen view that increases your field of vision as well as your frame rate, and there’s a real-time map of the city marked with all its landmarks. Though you can drive around ten different vehicles total, it’s too bad there weren’t even more real cars, like the hundreds available in the popular PlayStation driving game Gran Turismo. It’s also a bit of a disappointment that all the cars you’ll come across on the city streets are generic hatchbacks and sedans and not the real thing like what you’re driving. Midtown Madness requires some pretty powerful hardware in order to look its best, and even at its best it doesn’t look as good as it might have and often suffers from choppy frame rates. With all its options turned on, the vehicles look nice and shiny although at times a little too flat. They get damaged when they run into things, although this effect isn’t entirely convincing either. Other details really stand out, like the bright traffic lights and the different weather and time conditions that manage to evoke a particular beauty about the city through their sheer variety.

To put it in a nutshell

But while it’s great to see Chicago’s landmarks and its smaller streets modeled so carefully, it’s too bad that most of the storefronts in the game are generic and often repeated, even on the same block. Thus Midtown Madness approaches, but doesn’t actually reach, that meticulous level of realism and detail that driving games must necessarily strive for. Nevertheless, it’s fun to be able to drive like a maniac and beat up a Beetle while racing the city cops. If you feel there’s some scathingly detrimental social undercurrent to this game’s affording you the freedom to drive however you like, then by all means keep off the road. But Midtown Madness doesn’t present itself as some sort of perfectly realistic simulation: Pedestrians deftly dive out of the way of traffic, cars that are struck and sent airborne safely return to their routine, and mailboxes and parking meters that are uprooted eventually regenerate in their rightful places. Midtown Madness because you know you can’t in real life. There’s a lot of running amok to be done. The cruise mode just lets you drive wherever you like without restriction, but a number of other modes, including checkpoint races, larger-scale circuit races, timed races, and even a multiplayer-only cops and robbers game add a lot of value as you try to beat your rivals, the clock, or both. Your computer-controlled rivals drive aggressively and seek out shortcuts, while you yourself must choose to either adhere to the rules of the road or take some serious risks in reaching your destination before the other cars do. Even in these more straightforward racing modes, Midtown Madness lets you drive however you want. Add to that a fairly realistic physics model, good graphics and sound, and a lot of variety, and it’s easy to see why Midtown Madness is so much fun. You’ll find yourself wishing it was even more detailed, but all the same, you’ll wish all other driving games paid as much attention to detail as this one. Racing games have become a dime a dozen on the PC and, to be perfectly honest, most of them suck (just ask our very own Stephen Butts … he’s been the delegated racing reviewer for about three months because we’ve all gotten sick of them around the office and, well, he’s the new guy so he has to take a few kicks in the belly). Well, with Midtown Madness, Microsoft and Angel Studios has broken the mold and has offered up a lot of fun at the office lately, so much that the console freaks (specifically Matt and Craig) are starting to see the PC in a whole new light. Midtown Madness takes place in the windy city, Chicago. Angel Studios has done a great job of portraying a decent portion of the downtown area, with Lakeshore Dr. and I-90 forming the borders of the playing field, and there are lots of famous landmarks on the map.

lets you safely run amok

Those of you familiar with Chicago will have no problem making your way from Wrigley Field to Soldier Field, and you may even want to make a stop at Navy Pier on your way. Admittedly, some portions of the city do look very generic, but overall the downtown portion of Chicago is portrayed very accurately and the designers did a great job of mixing authenticity with smooth gameplay. While the landscape is realistically modeled, Midtown Madness doesn’t rely heavily on driving authenticity; this game’s all about fun. There are no gear ratios to mess with, no tires to pick from, no shocks to adjust. Instead you just pick a real-world car and go. In the early races you can pick from a brand-spankin’ new Volkswagen Beetle, a stylish Cadillac Eldorado, a city bus, a super-fast Panoz Roadster, a powerful Mustang GT or a meaty Ford F-350 (which I hear is built Ford tough). Depending on your performance during the race, you can unlock even more road-ready vehicles, like a Panoz GTR-1 racer, a classic ’68 Mustang, a Mustang Police Cruiser and even a behemoth Freightliner Century Class C120 trailer truck. Now that’s real power. Each of the vehicles drives as you would imagine they would. The Mustang and Panzoz types are fast but fragile, the bus and trailer truck are slow but can bust through traffic jams with ease, and the Beetle and Eldorado fall somewhere in between. There are four different ways to drive in single play. You can take a leisurely cruise through the city, checking out the sites, or you can compete in either a checkpoint, circuit or blitz race throughout the streets of Chicago. Except for the circuit races which make you stay on a charted course, you have free range in the city streets, so it’s not always about who has the fastest car, but who can find the quickest route to the finish line while still passing under all of the checkpoints. And there are plenty of shortcuts to find in Midtown Madness. There are unmarked alleyways, tunnels and even a few storefronts that you can bust through. The city of Chicago is populated with pedestrians as well as other cars who are going about their daily business as you speed around them. Other cars will stop at red lights, use their blinkers when taking a turn and even put on their hazards when they get in a wreck. And those of you worried about violence in videogames will be glad to hear that the pedestrians always dive out of the way of oncoming cars, so no blood is spilled in Midtown Madness. Angel Studios has also included variable weather and time options so you can race at night in the snow if you wish, and snow will actually accumulate over time so your driving dynamics will change as more snow builds up on the roadways.

There are a few minor problems

The multiplayer aspects of this game are absolutely superb and Midtown Madness has been the cause of several sleep-deprived nights for the IGN staff because we’ve been too busy playing to go home and bed down for the night. You can play with eight people over a LAN or the Internet and, while we did run into a few lag issues where what we saw on one screen didn’t necessarily happen on someone else’s screen, the game is extremely fun nonetheless. Somewhat disappointing is the lack of traffic in the multiplayer game, but it keeps the game running smooth and cuts down on latency as much as possible. While you can opt to challenge other gamers in traditional racing, the most fun of the multiplayer modes are the Gold Rush matches where you all go after a big gold brick that has been dropped somewhere in the city and try to get it back to the appropriate checkpoint. There’s a lot to like in this game, but  that mar an otherwise fantastic game. For starters, when you’re racing in the single play mode the cops will only go after your car, leaving the computer-controlled cars alone. This is particularly frustrating when you’re in the lead and the cops knock you into a wall ending your game. Another problem I ran into was occasional narration skipping before the start of the race. But these are just qualms, and there’s nothing in the game that really stands out as glaringly wrong. In the end, Midtown Madness is an entertaining racer that will keep you glued to your screen in a mad dash to the finish. The best thing about this game is the feeling that you’re racing in a real city instead of just driving around on a flat circle. Midtown Madness comes highly recommended. Graphically, the game is absolutley marvelous, letting you race through (a portion) of Chicago, all the while weaving and dodging through traffic. Cars are reflective, pedestrians walk along the sidewalks and so on. Mailboxes spill mail when you hit them, coins scatter out of meters when you knock those over, and there’s even a shopping mall which you may accidently crash through. The physics are also wonderful. The game lets you drive a variety of vehicles (there are also a number of web sites at which you can download MORE cars!) including a 1999 Ford Mustang, Ford Mustang Police Cruiser (with working lights and siren!), a 99 VW Beetle, AND a City Bus (and more…). The cars bounce on their shocks, the bodies crumple, windshields shatter. It all looks (and feels) very realistic. But most realistic is the traffic, obeying traffic signals, using turn signals, etc. If you accidently run into one, they’ll yell their complaint. The game gives you three types of races and a ‘cruise’ mode. The race modes include Blitz, Checkpoint, and Circuit.

Blitz mode is just you, by yourself, racing through all check points in a certain preset amount of time. There will be other cars on the road however, and it will take a great deal of skill to maneuver around them. Checkpoint Race is a competition between you and other racers. Whoever makes it through all of the checkpoints first, wins! Lastly, and weakest of all, is the Circuit Race, where you and other racers must go through a ‘loop’ of checkpoints. Whoever finishes his laps first wins. There are no ambient ‘civilian’ cars present here. One of my personal favorites is cruise mode. No checkpoints, no ‘enemy’ racers, just you and Chicago. After you beat a race, you can go back through and choose how much competition you will have, as well as checkpoints, weather, traffic, cops and pedestrians. From a Christian standpoint, there’s really nothing wrong with this game. Pedestrians CANNOT be hit, at all. Your car just passes through them if you happen to head toward one. Most of the time however, they just jump out of the way. I guess some people would have problems with the fact that you CAN run into other vehicles (even though, after a period of time, their damage is instantly repaired, and they move along on down the road). Also, while racing, police cruisers will sometimes chase you. Their purpose, however, is simply to destroy your vehicle. This is often humorous because they yell things like “Throw the doughnut out the window and step out of the vehicle!”, etc. The other cars, if you do hit them, do not (thankfully) yell any profanity! I thought that was very professional of Microsoft.
