The game hints at there being something more to discover outside of the Milky Way which only adds to the mystery of the story. This is the main feature of the story, the mystery of what is going on, who the enemy are and how the player fits into it all. Themes of the meaning of existence and purpose are heavily intertwined into the plot which makes for an interesting story that kept me playing to learn more. The game handles draw distance exceedingly well, cities are visible from orbit and as the player descends tree’s become visible and even grass and flowers are generated at the ground level. Despite this the game still has its own beauty, the way light hits planets is beautiful and soaring through the universe is a sight to behold. There are unfortunately some mission-breaking bugs present at the time of this review. During one of my missions I had to destroy four motherships that would keep spawning smaller enemies.

Despite destroying them the game did not recognise they had been destroyed and kept spawning enemies in a never ending loop. I had to replay the same mission about five times for the game to finally respond and allow me to proceed. This is a bug that is present in multiple levels and while not game breaking it is nonetheless frustrating. I had hours of fun exploring the universe, checking out landmarks and discovering secrets out in the galaxy between fighting off waves of alien enemies. Unfortunately I have to mark Megaton Rainfall down for its mission-breaking bugs, however this title is a refreshing experience and a fun one at that. There were times when I’d overshoot my mark and then have to awkwardly try to reposition myself before members of the public started dying in droves. The sheer size of Earth is initially daunting but after a few hours smashing through the missions you start to realise that there’s not a whole lot of detail to everything, which is totally fine considering the game’s indie origins but it does lead to a lack of opportunities to explore as much as I would have liked. Learning these patterns and exploiting the weaknesses are the only way to beat the aliens before they destroy everything, and I often found myself failing a mission one or two times before I got the patterns down. It made me feel like each new mission was more of a chore than an experience. Thankfully at the end of each mission your creator will gift you one of the Xenoshperes, which unlock new abilities like more powerful attacks, or talents like freezing time. These power-ups work on their own cooldown timer, so use them sparingly. After a few missions the ability to fly is upgraded, and then suddenly the universe is open up to the player. It is a neat idea, but don’t expect to find lots of different life forms or exciting new worlds (a la No Mans Sky), instead it acts as a way to hunt Xenospheres and open up the story’s mysterious plot.

Just be warned that if you do decide to go wandering around the universe, the game starts to beg you to return to the missions by flashing a prompt on the screen every second. The game also gets a little too real when it comes to the void of space, with the screen going completely dark in places, meaning that all you are staring at is an arrow directing to the next mission. Add to that a lack of a sense of speed and I found exploring space to be rather dull. Megaton rainfall also has a VR mode, for those who own the headset. This is the full game and not just a separate mode, which would be commendable if it wasn’t for the fact that the controls feel even more cumbersome in VR mode, as well as causing me to feel sick after just a few minutes of playtime. I know that not everyone gets motion sickness, but those that do, be warned. Except for this small incentive, the truth is that the title does not offer anything else, so after finishing a campaign mode that lasts around 6 hours there will be little to do.
