In order to accomplish this, he must journey across five distinct landscapes collecting a trail of coins left behind by the thief, while avoiding the deadly obstacles that appear in his way. This premise may not seem like much, but it acts as a great vehicle for a charming moral tale about the pitfalls of avarice and sloth. Perhaps the most striking aspect of Leo’s Fortune is its outstanding art direction. Each environment is brimming with detail; white petals fall elegantly in the forest, underground machines rattle and shake, and fires burn upon cavern walls. It’s this amount of depth that makes the title so fascinating to watch. It’s also responsible for the construction of a believable world for you to roam around. Though it originally started its life on mobile devices, Leo’s Fortune handles brilliantly without the use of a touch screen and stylus. Moving about feels just as natural as ever, which is fortunate given the precise timing that’s sometimes required. By pushing Leo in your direction of choice he will build up speed, allowing him to ride loops and soar off ramps to bold new heights. He also has the ability to glide and to perform a ground pound on different objects and switches. This comes in handy when solving the diverse puzzles that are thrown your way. These puzzles revolve around moving blocks, directing the flow of liquids, and timing jumps to evade spikes. They’re all fairly straightforward, but provide a healthy dose of satisfaction when completed. If you consider yourself skilled enough, there’s also an unlockable hardcore mode where you can test your prowess.

Environments are rendered with nothing but carefully crafted artistic flair seeing as each one distinguishes itself with memorable backgrounds, cohesive themes, and design elements that always complement the gameplay. Leo’s animations are also admirable considering he’s just a small green mustachioed ball. As he moves, puffs up, and interacts with objects, you can tell how much effort he’s exerting as his eyes bug out and shift from side to side. He also has a gruff Eastern European accent which for some reason ends up making him even more endearing. As you work your way through the levels, he’ll say insightful lines that reflect exactly what you’re thinking in that moment which adds a great deal of levity to the gameplay. The included music is playful and orchestral which perfectly suits the whimsical nature of the game while sound effects are both subtle and gratifying. Overall, you may not envision such an odd game boasting this level of quality, but that makes it all the more spectacular to play. Blasphemous

It’s easy to imagine how these controls factor in to the platforming which makes gameplay effortless and intuitive. Flying off a ramp then floating over a suspended plank only to crash into it and use it as a springboard is a ton of fun. The puzzles range from simplistic to lengthy Rube Goldberg-esque segments. Figuring them out is never impossible as long as you put some mental effort in which results in each one being a satisfying undertaking. Many levels incorporate different physics-based mechanics such as dealing with heavy winds, swimming underwater, and riding various vehicles. In the end, it’s fantastic how Leo’s Fortune balances puzzles and platforming through a variety of situations while remaining nothing short of fun from start to finish. The other two styles slow Leo down considerably. With his inflate ability, he can not only jump and launch off walls, but he can also slow his descent, giving himself greater control in spiky sections.

Here, Leopold’s slipperiness can get him into trouble; he will sometimes maintain momentum from a speed section straight into a trap. It can be difficult to make the small adjustments necessary for the precision segments, because pressing in one direction for more than a split second will send him careening in that direction. The puzzles are a welcome change of pace, though they never really tax the brain. For the most part, they are the same kinds of physics-based puzzles we’ve seen elsewhere. They’re certainly not bad, but they’re never mindblowing either. All of this is tied together by an after school special-esque story. Though the specifics of the big twist aren’t exactly predictable, it’s clear throughout that Leopold is barking up the wrong trees and stands to learn a life lesson. It’s almost like one of Aesop’s fables; it comes with the moral of appreciating people over possessions, which is a great message to teach children, but feels trite to those who have heard it before. A good platformer not only requires a good gameplay experience in terms of level design and controls, but also need to do a good job of conveying an experience to the player. Cutscenes set the stage for each mission, as Leo encounters a variety of relatives that all seem to have some motivation for taking his fortune. Along the way, Leo will jump, inflate and interact with a variety of items, all in the name of getting to the next map. Leo’s Fortune was originally conceived as a Smartphone adventure but, as is the case with any successful game, it has seen many ports to other platforms. The most recent appearance is on PS4 and Xbox One. Running at a steady 60fps and at 1080p, the game has never looked better. Unfortunately, performance is not everything and the simple controls and puzzles are fine on a portable device but mundane when a controller is in your hands. Leo’s Fortune is a solid platformer but if you are willing to spend a little more money, you can find a far more engrossing experience.

You play the game as Leo who is essentially an inflatable fluffy ball. He looks adorable with his huge eyes, soft fur and endearing moustache, but do not be fooled by his appearance as he is a bitter old ‘ball’. He sounds like a retired mobster with his thick, eastern European accent and the whole narrative revolves around wealth. The story begins with his riches being stolen and a simple case of whodunit ensues. Each level begins with Leo informing the player about a potential suspect within his family and he gives us a brief history about them. The levels themselves act like a breadcrumb trail leading towards the true culprit except you’ll be collecting his coins along the way. Regardless of its polish, though, there are still some areas where the game could improve. This applies most notably to its length and level design. With only five worlds to complete, you’ll be finished with the main scenario in no time, and this is especially disappointing considering how likeable everything is. A bit more variety would go a long way to improving this, either in regards to the number of stages or the types of obstacles that you have to overcome. There are far too many occasions where a level simply repeats the same challenge over and over again to extend its length, and these moments tend to be the least enjoyable segments to play through, as they make you feel like the developer has run out of original ideas to surprise you with. Another aspect where Leo’s Fortune excels is its additional content. A lot of games nowadays forgo features such as leaderboards and bonus rounds, but luckily you’ll find both here. Each of the 20 levels contains three earnable stars that correspond to collecting all of that level’s coins, not losing a life, and beating it in under a par time. Once you gain enough, you unlock the bonus round for the corresponding act. These can range from seeing how many laps you can do around a course within a time limit to beating an extra level with as much time left on the clock as possible. Climbing the leaderboards for these bonus rounds manages to be even more enjoyable than the main levels. Speaking of which, you can also find hidden golden cogs in the levels if you’re clever enough.

Although there are some undeniably substantial extra features, the main campaign is over much too soon. Each level can take anywhere from two to five minutes, so it all adds up to a little over an hour if all you want to do is experience the core game. Of course, you could climb leaderboards and try for all three stars, but not everyone will be compelled to do so. Another issue is that there are multiple sections within each level that simply repeat themselves. In other words, you regularly have to overcome the same obstacle up to five times in a row in order to proceed. This comes across as lazy and can occasionally become annoying. Finally, if there were some modes such as a split-screen multiplayer race or some mini-games that took advantage of the established gameplay mechanics then a significant amount of replay value would have been added. Instead, there really isn’t much to do besides mastering the provided levels.
