Right out of the gate, Hello Neighbor 2 feels exactly like the original, for better or worse. The controls are really stiff, which was my biggest bone to pick with the original. I’m sure that on PC the gameplay is a bit smoother but on Xbox, this needs some more tuning for sure. Interacting with objects was kind of a pain because of this as well. On the flip side, you have some really interesting new mechanics and ideas that further expand upon things that I loved from the original. The first great mechanic is the ability to open windows. This wasn’t present in the first title but feels like something right at home with the theme of sneaking around these environments anyway you can. Traversing the monstrous locations and solving their puzzles are always the best parts of these games and adding more layers to that makes the experience all the more enticing. That leads me to my favorite thing about Hello Neighbor 2 so far; the open world. There’s a lot of backtracking in this game between its many locations, each with its own puzzles and clues to find. It feels pretty rewarding when you make progress as this is a game that really leaves it up to you to figure things out on your own.

The biggest way the beta got the better of me was in its many bugs and glitches around the map. It made trying to enjoy what was offered kind of a slog. The worst offender was The Guest, the game’s newest antagonist, that seemingly pops out of nowhere and forces you to go back to a certain spot. He’s mostly outside but made it hard to even leave my base at times, as he’d literally just pop up behind me and bring me back with little to no reason. I’m hoping that the gameplay itself gets tightened up a bit more for consoles because again, it feels really archaic and I know that these teams could be doing a lot better with the available technology. This isn’t 2017, folks. As for the positives; I’m really looking forward to seeing how they implement the Residents into the rest of the game. Each has its own unique look and personality that really engaged me. They’re similar to the Neighbor as they chase you throughout their set locations. I’m also really excited to see how the world changes as you progress through the game. Ridge Racer Unbounded

The beginning of the Hello Neighbor 2 beta starts with your character, a local journalist named Quentin, arriving in a new town as a journalist investigating murders and disappearances. We first see Quentin climbing an old barn, stumbling, falling through the roof, and landing on some hay precariously close to a pitchfork and a blackboard. This part of the game is a tutorial; the goals are written out on a blackboard near where you have fallen. The first step of this goal is to retrieve your camera, which is stuck hanging from a beam of wood where you fell from and take a picture of “the guest”, a strange bird beaked humanoid. Following the hints, you explore the barn, finding various clues and prompts. The prompts give you keyboard and mouse inputs for interacting with the world. Find a key to unlock a door, and then climb the ladder. You quickly retrieve your camera and take a picture of “The Guest”, who, after having its photo taken, bursts through the door, causing a bright light to startle Quentin, who awakes, realising he is behind the wheel of a news van and had fallen asleep at the wheel and the bright light is the headlamp of a passing car.

Hello Neighbor 2 is an interesting concept. Unfortunately, this beta does not demonstrate the game’s potential as well as the developers might have hoped. The beta is put forward as an investigation sim with learning AI but is closer to a point and click game in the way puzzles are set up, at least as far as this beta is concerned. There are a couple of sections playable right now during the short beta. The first section is the tutorial to familiarise the player with the controls and concepts. The next part is the start of the game, aiming to get into the basement of a currently police occupied dwelling and ongoing investigation. The last is more about exploring the town, learning the townspeople’s habits, and solving a larger puzzle. Hello Neighbor 2 has no dialogue and is meant to be contextual and discovery-based, the aim of the game is to solve puzzles, and those puzzles open up a final solution. The game doesn’t hold the player’s hand to find these solutions, instead leaving it up to the player to discover and solve the random assortment of puzzles.

Having not played the first game in the series, I felt lost and overwhelmed rather fast, especially during the last part of the beta. The aim of the game is to discover more about the town and work within the sandbox to solve seemingly random puzzles and use those discoveries to progress the hidden and implied story. I had a hard time figuring most of these puzzles out, resorting to google and watching videos. I still had trouble linking the solutions and completing the game while also wondering how I would have discovered these solutions on my own. The game, while in beta, is choppy at best, with random lighting effects being triggered while just moving down the street. There are clearly meant to be multiple times of days, and events, with characters working around these. In my playthroughs, I found that the skybox didn’t seem to register that it was day or night, choosing whatever it felt like at the time.

I distinctly remember looking at the character’s watch and being shown 8 AM and the sky moving from sunny day to midnight dark and back within just a few strides down the street. The graphics options also changed at random, loading up at low resolution and having to be changed every time I accessed the game. There were more glitches than I can count, losing my save game on more than one occasion and when loading a previous one having the game force me to stay in the single confines of the studio and not letting me progress. As a newcomer to the series, I could not get into the game and felt overwhelmed fast. I believe this game needs more polish and development time. The release date is late December, so hopefully, it will become fully developed with this extra time. As much as I didn’t enjoy this beta, I am going to try Hello Neighbor as it has raised some curiosity about the series with me. Rune Factory 4 Special
