A character introduced in the second chapter ends up playing a pseudo-detective role after he loses a girl’s phone number and has to find a new way of contacting her. However, putting two and two together is never all that taxing given the relatively constrained environment of each chapter and the limited number of people with whom you can interact. In terms of presentation, the pixel art of Half Past Fate is absolutely a highlight. One of the closest comparisons to it would be Thimbleweed Park, but the art is much more detailed and bright, which is befitting of the much more light-hearted affair. The soundtrack doesn’t have too many different tracks, but the music you’ll hear the most often is very pleasant and uplifting, and it suits the aesthetic and theme quite well. The UI and menus are easy to access and clear, making the whole experience very accessible and smooth. As with any narrative title, the story needs to be interesting and hold the player’s attention, and I can safely say that both of those objectives are achieved. The way that Half Past Fate tells its tale out of chronological order is a little confusing at first, but it begins to make more sense as you approach the final chapters. It’s worth exploring each chapter fully not just to unlock all of the achievements, some of which are hidden, but also because the dialogue with other characters and the chapter protagonist’s observations are cute and funny. Rom-com fans will find a lot to like here. Half Past Fate managed to hold my attention even if it didn’t entirely sweep me off my feet.

As you follow their ups and downs across these 12 vignettes, it’s impossible not to root for each character to succeed in their quest for love. The in-game achievements give an incentive to explore more thoroughly, and the accessible nature of the game means anyone can enjoy it. If you’re looking for the adventure game equivalent of meet-cute, schedule a date with Half Past Fate. If you’re in your teens or beyond, chances are you’ve probably found yourself falling head over heels in love with someone at least once in your life. We all know the feeling: you see a stunning stranger out of the corner of your eye, someone who you’re absolutely sure is way out of your league, but your eyes lock, and they smile at you, and all of a sudden the idea of striking up a conversation becomes a very real, albeit very scary, possibility. Your hands start to feel sweaty, your stomach turns into a miniature, biological rollercoaster, and your brain plays out a million different scenarios at light-speed. It may feel a bit overly idyllic at times, but it often nails the dialogue and quite frankly looks absolutely gorgeous to boot. The game is split into chapters, each of which consists of a single scene – rather like a vignette – focusing primarily on a single pair of the game’s handful of main characters. You’ll directly control one character, and the gameplay is largely an exercise in miniature fetch quests and dialogue options. Just the words ‘fetch quest’ may incite fear in some folk, but the mechanic is implemented quite nicely into the game. You’ll be collecting items, swapping them with NPCs, placing them within the environment, and more. It’s very ‘gamey’, in a way, but simultaneously feels like a natural fit in the game’s world. You’ll genuinely want to explore every nook and cranny of the various environments too, because Half Past Fate looks stunning. It’s a perfect blend of 2D sprites and 3D environments, and everything from the character models to the tiny cups of coffee burst with personality – it’s one of the most beautiful pixel art games we’ve seen in a good while. Similarly, the music is wonderfully upbeat, and the combination of this along with the colourful visuals make for an incredibly pleasant gaming experience.Our only major complaint with the game is that it’s often quite stubborn in pointing you in the right direction.

The environments themselves are quite contained, so you won’t ever be stuck for too long, but there were certainly multiple occasions in which we felt like we’d spoken to every NPC, investigated every possible avenue of exploration, and yet we still couldn’t quite figure out what to do to progress the story. Of course, the solution is always there, but often felt rather hidden away; some kind of subtle hint system would have gone a long way in assisting with this. Half Past Fate is primarily a fetch based quest game. That allows you to explore each map thoroughly, interact with NPCs, the background and even plants! Each map is fairly small, and is linked to one of twelve chapters in the game, where you play as one of the six protagonists as you help fate match them into three happy couples; Rinden and Mara, Ana and Jaren, and Bia and Milo. The cast is diverse, in appearance, personality and identity; you’ll very likely find a character you identify with. The story jumps back and forth between present day, and eight and a half years ago, which I’ll admit left me a little confused at first, but once I got into the gameplay didn’t impact things too much – other than trying to remember the various NPCs, and their connections to all of the characters. Fetch based quests, while a very common feature in most games, stand out here as it leaves Half Past Fate feeling like an interactive movie, rather than a game. It has a set linear path, that you have to follow, and can’t deviate from it at all. This allows for a fairly short game; it took me about two and a half hours from start to finish, although I will definitely be going back to earn a few extra trophies. As someone that loves running around an open world map exploring every possible side quest before actually playing the main story, it felt a little weird only playing the main storyline. Despite this, the gameplay is incredibly simple, using only a few buttons, which was all explained in the first chapter, with a helpful but hardly noticeable tutorial. Throughout the game, a key remains at the bottom of the screen, reminding you in case you forget. The downside of the minimal interaction options means that any problem you are face within the game are fairly straightforward to solve, especially due to the small maps, at most being about three shops large. Pixel based games will always have a special place in my heart, they take me back to growing up in the late 1990’s. Not only does the artwork have nostalgic qualities, but it really is beautiful; the 2D pixel artwork, alongside its soft, pastel colour palette makes it stand out against other games in the genre, which tend to have brighter, more saturated colour palettes.

The score compliments the game really well too, with an upbeat, electronic, and almost jaunty backing track, adding to the light-hearted nature of the game. Subtle animation really brings this world to life, from the waves in the water, to Bia’s hair bouncing as she walks, to Chai’s happy wagging tail. The tongue-in-cheek humour, which pokes fun at the genre and gameplay is unlike anything I’ve found in games before. It’s a mix of the traditional rom-com humour and a very postmodern Gen Z humour, dry but upbeat, and deeply refreshing throughout. An interactive romantic comedy film isn’t a bad idea. A point and click adventure which sees you play a range of lovestruck characters – from a schlubby videogame fan to a constantly fretting businesswoman – who you have to gently nudge in the direction of true love by solving a range of simple puzzles. The game is split into chapters, with each one taking part in lovingly designed pixel-art environments. Buildings open up like dollhouses once you go inside them, and there’s a great level of detail evident throughout – the aesthetics are hugely charming. Sadly a game that focuses so much on its characters, their stories, and how they overlap has to rely heavily on the quality of its script. And this is where Half Past Fate comes a little unstuck. Although never overly cloying or irritating, it falls short at offering the kind of sharp and effortless sparkle the best romantic comedy writing possesses. It’s knowing without being truly witty, and is often overly sentimental without earning the right to be so. Although its characters aren’t unlikeable, they’re nowhere near as lovable as the game seems to think they are. So although seeing all the character arcs come together at the end is satisfying, it’s not something that will have stuck with you by the time the credits have rolled. So ultimately considering the game’s price tag you’re probably better off with either Florence – that packs more of an emotional wallop – or something like The Lions Song, which boasts more involved and satisfying puzzles. Half Past Fate isn’t a bad game by any means, and is a fine way to spend a few hours – but it’s not much more than that. So really it’s the perfect representation of the lightweight romantic comedy films it looks to mimic.The story follows six individuals as they traverse obstacles in their lives and stumble their way into love. The game cycles through individual scenarios in their lives, with the player taking control of one of the six to resolve the problem in that particular chapter. Each chapter is filled with charming dialogue that builds up each character as the story progresses.

While some characters are more developed than others, and some parts of the story can be cheesy, each arc is concluded in a way that wraps up cleanly towards the end. Half Past Fate is an adventure game, with some very simple puzzles sprinkled in to help guide you through each chapter as they piece together the stories of three potential couples. However, you’ll find that most of your time will actually be spent reading instead of actually exploring around the first time. This is a game where the narrative and the characters are the focus first and foremost, but with the option to navigate between chapters after completion and an achievement system, you may find yourself going back to explore environments more closely after the fact. The puzzles in the game are very simple, with the player needing to figure out how to fix other characters’ problems. This can mean bringing an item from one place to another, or speaking to a group of NPCs to get the full story of the problem in a particular chapter. Oftentimes, solving one problem will reveal the solution to the next, so clearing through chapters is not difficult. The one downside of the game is the save system. While this Half Past Fate can easily be finished in a few hours, the save system can be a bit convoluted. The save functionality relies on finding a little white bunny that is placed somewhere in a chapter that needs to be clicked on in order for the game to save.
