For some of you reading this review, the following game might look just like any other title from the transformative PC gaming days of the ’90s. A relic of an era where polygons were blocky, textures lacked detail and aspect ratios were square at best. But for many of us, Grim wasn’t just a game. It was – and remains – a touchstone. A proper highlight for LucasArts, for a studio that was already pumping out some of the decade’s best software. Wherever you might sit on the spectrum, you’re in for a treat now that Grim Fandango Remastered has arrived on Nintendo Switch. It doesn’t matter that this prim and proper version has been out elsewhere for nigh on four years – including plenty of handheld platforms at that – because it’s just as brilliant as ever. It’s remained one of the best-loved adventure games ever made for a reason – the fact it was the first LucasArts adventure game to use 3D graphics on static backgrounds; the way Peter McConnell’s eclectic score weaved Latin flavour with noir gloom; the sheer brilliance of its voice performances. There’s just so much appreciate here. Even its story and dialogue is still as pithy and self-referential as ever. Grim pays homage to so many different inspirations through its four-act story. There’s the Dia de Muertos (the Day of the Dead celebration in South America) aesthetic that informs its character designs; the cool yet bleak approach to storytelling that doffs its cap at the classic noir mysteries of film and literature. It’s one of LucasArts most unique and memorable games of the ‘90s to not feature an X-Wing or a lightsaber and has dated far better than many of its contemporaries that were also dipping their toes into ‘proper’ 3D. Double Fine did a fine job deftly updating its own legacy with Grim (studio head Tim Schafer oversaw the original at LucasArts before it was shuttered and remains one of the most important creative minds in the industry) and the Nintendo Switch port benefits from each little adjustment as a result. Lighting models now run in real-time, while almost every asset has had its textures upped to a much higher resolution. The controls have been enhanced to help them better suit a console, but you can play with that ‘classic’ tank setup, should you wish. That ability to dial back the clock even extends to the aspect ratio, which can be played in a traditional (for the time) 4:3 or stretched to a more palatable 16:9. As you might expect for an adventure game on Switch, you can play with the buttons and analog stick on your Joy-Con or direct Manny through the Land of the Dead by tapping the touchscreen.

Even without a mouse, keyboard and CRT monitor in sight, this is as faithful a recreation of the original experience you can get without facing many of the problems inherent to playing two-decade-old PC games.Double Fine has helped usher in something of a renaissance for the adventure game with the likes of Broken Age, but it wouldn’t be here without the legacy Grim set in place 20 years ago. Sure, the game itself was a commercial flop at the time, but much like the best things in life, Manny’s underworld odyssey became a cult classic that’s only gotten better with age. Now that it’s been optimised for Nintendo Switch, there’s never been a better time to give this gaming highlight another go. LucasArts is a name that many gamers of a certain age are likely to remember with fondness. There are plenty of Star Wars titles like Rogue Squadron that fans will probably immediately think of when reminiscing about LucasArts, but of equal importance are the studio’s more original offerings, which provided equally powerful experiences and memories over the course of its 31-year history as a developer. One title that lands firmly in this category is Grim Fandango. Released in 1998, the game pushed the boundaries of the adventure genre while also simultaneously sounding its death-knell. But it was also a massive commercial failure for LucasArts that ultimately pushed the company away from developing adventure games. LucasArts ceased to be a game development house in 2013 and subsequently jettisoned some of the franchises formerly under the company’s purview, including Grim Fandango. Tim Schafer, the head of developer Double Fine and director of Grim Fandango, worked in tandem with Sony to help bring the title back under his control. Successful in this endeavor, Schafer then worked diligently to produce Grim Fandango Remastered, an improved version of the original boasting better graphics and controls to be released on contemporary gaming consoles. Grim Fandango Remastered follows the exploits of a travel salesman in the Land of the Dead. Manuel “Manny” Calavara is that salesman, a short, insightful fellow who just so happens to be an ambulatory skeleton in a suit. Manny’s Spanish accent mixes very well among the abundant throngs of Dia de Los Muertos calacas (candy skulls, skeletons, etc.) that are so predominant in Grim Fandango‘s visual design. Mixed with bits of art deco and noir design cues, the juxtaposition of all these different aesthetics coalesces into an immensely pleasing whole, evoking movies like The Maltese Falcon while also incorporating a pinch of Latin flair.

It’s a bold, unique approach that still feels fresh today. As a Mexican-American, I couldn’t help but be amused at hearing someone like Manny in a video game, and I also appreciated the fact that he’s never once portrayed as a pandering stereotype. For this remastered version of Grim Fandango, all of the original game assets have been modified for modern screens. Everything displays in 1080p while also boasting better textures and optional aspect ratios depending on the player’s tastes. While it will be easier for most people to appreciate the art direction of Grim Fandango Remastered versus its original form, some might still gripe about its polygonal character models and old-school pre-rendered backgrounds. While Schafer and company could have opted to build Grim Fandango from the ground up, they instead chose to preserve the general look and feel of the ’98 version of the game, a decision I totally support. It’s easy to forget, what with praise for games like Shovel Knight so commonplace these days, but there was a time when pixel graphics weren’t looked at with such fondness. Many pundits saw pixels as archaic relics of the consoles of old. Today, the same sort of myopic mentality is levied at polygons from the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation era of gaming. It’s a ridiculously limited way of looking at video games and something that you won’t find in any of my reviews. LEGO DC Super-Villains 

Grim Fandango Remastered‘s polygons are beautiful and its pre-rendered backdrops equally so. It’s reminiscent of the original trilogy of Resident Evil games on PS1 but (ironically) nowhere near as grim. I can’t gush enough over how pretty this game is. Grim Fandango Remastered plays as well as it looks. As Manny tries to uncover the secret behind the conspiracy surrounding him, players are able to interact with a number of different characters and elements within the game world. Like the best adventure games, there’s a bunch of stuff to see and do, and logically trying to determine what goes where or with whom to speak next is the crux of all the fun. All of the puzzles are cleverly designed and engender a true sense of gratification when solved. Perhaps even more importantly, though— how many games ask players to pick out balloon animals for crying out loud?! It’s all part of the quirky, unique vibe of Grim Fandango Remastered.Perhaps because of the nature of adventure games like these, Grim Fandango Remastered doesn’t have the fastest pace. It’s a methodical adventure through the Land of the Dead, which means that those without the wherewithal to sit and become ensconced in Manny’s world might have trouble sticking through to the end. For those willing to invest in this layered, meaty adventure, however, Grim Fandango Remastered is as relevant and fun as ever.

Indeed, the fact that games like this are still the exception speaks volumes about the lack of progress the industry has seen in terms of diversifying the types of experiences that are available to fans. I love adventure games. Whether it’s Day of the Tentacle or The Secret of Monkey Island (which are also LucasArts games!), I love a game with a strong narrative and clever puzzles. I’m happy to say that Grim Fandango Remastered, Double Fine’s port of the original 1998 title, has both in spades. The story of Grim Fandango goes like this (without giving too much of it away): Manny Calavera is a travel agent for the Department of Death and wants to find better clients. He happens to find one, and ends up getting himself into a world of trouble that spans four years of perilous adventure. Manny travels through many places and locales in the underworld in order to search for and then send this client to where they rightfully belong. One of the strongest qualities Grim Fandango possesses, besides the fun characters and clever script, is the atmosphere. It is set in many brooding locales, filled with a great noir-like setting that’s easy to get lost in. The music, an eclectic mix of melodies and sounds from all over the world, is also a huge positive. Traveling around the underworld with Manny, Glottis, and other characters constantly felt both cool and funny—something that really isn’t all that easy to pull off. Grim Fandango doesn’t come without its problems, however. For one, the camera feels extremely dated. This was LucasArts’ first foray into a 3D adventure game, and it’s clear they didn’t get everything down pat. There were just too many times where I wanted to get to one area, but alternated between two different sections of a map because I had trouble figuring out how to get there. It’s manageable, but I wish things were made just a little bit easier to navigate in some areas. Also, while I love Grim Fandango’s puzzles, sometimes I felt just too lost trying to figure out where I needed to go or what I needed to do in order to solve a puzzle. Obviously, the goal is for you to figure out what you need to do in order to advance, and it’s probably more fun discovering the way on your own, but a hint system would have at least given me a nudge in the right direction. It’s a nice quality of life feature that would have made things just a bit more accessible. Despite the issues I have with it, Grim Fandango is a fantastic adventure game full of the snappy, witty charm that LucasArts is known for, complete with a stellar atmosphere and great cast of characters. It could have used a couple of enhancements, but Grim Fandango Remastered is a fine port of Manny Calavera’s escapades.

The portrayal of the Day of the Dead festival wasn’t a significant mainstay of the game; it was an underlying theme. Quick jump to the story: you play Manuel Calavera, Manny, a travel agent for the recently departed who arrive in the Land of the Dead. He was given the role to pay off some debts, but we never find out why. Based on his clients’ choices in life, they are rewarded with various travel options to help them get to the Ninth Underworld, starting a new… life. Manny has been stitched up though, and there’s a conspiracy in play as his co-worker Domino gets all the best clients. To get ahead of the game, Manny steals one of Domino’s clients named Mercedes, or Meche, who is guaranteed the top tier ticket on a luxury train, only to be told now she’s got nothing. Domino takes back his client, Manny loses his job and is now on the run after a series of events. Manny joins up with a group of freedom fighters, makes friends with a demon/elemental named Glottis who is a drunk and obsessed with driving and sets out to rescue Meche and fulfil the job he was meant to do. With Grim Fandango, you don’t actually point and click. You take control of Manny and manually control him around each scene. Manny interacts with each object either by pressing B for an explanation what the item is or A, to pick up or activate it.
