There are only a few games that truly capture the essence of being a legendary gunslinger in the wild west. It’s a task that normally takes a convincing cast or immersive setting, but Dust & Neon obtains this through a different route. Instead, Dust & Neon leads with rich, meticulous gameplay that demands attention to each decision’s benefits and downsides, and adds the finishing touch with a unique twist on the twin-stick shooter genre. Developed by David Marquardt Studios, Dust & Neon is a top-down twin-stick shooter rogue lite that places the player in the shoes of an unnamed cowboy with only one job: eradicate the western robots that have overrun society. After a brief introduction to the mad scientist who brought the gunslinger back to life, the player will quickly be thrown into the western setting with a revolver as their only companion. The game’s core structure is built around its map, which is split into four separate locations that spawn random missions to rob trains and destroy enemy bases or supplies. The goal of each mission is to gather enough experience points to eventually challenge the boss of that region and, once defeated, move to the next location to do the same. While the premise might sound generic, Dust & Neon separates itself from other twin-stick shooters with its approach to gun mechanics and resource management. The player will only have access to three types of weapons: a revolver, shotgun, and rifle. Each weapon has a limited supply of ammo and must be manually reloaded between every emptied round.

Instead, they must meticulously move from crate to crate, manually reloading their triple barrel shotgun, and wait for the enemy to peek around the wrong corner before making a move. It’s a system that creates dynamic gameplay for every encounter no matter the other elements that may lay stagnant in comparison. Outside the refined core game loop is where Dust & Neon lacks some diversity. There are a very limited number of mission types for the player to engage in, and each locale is only visibly separated by a small margin. One location might feature visual elements of a dirty swamp or a western village, but all will feature similar buildings, designs, items, and enemy types. However, the similarity of each environment or mission type is overshadowed by the risk and reward system that comes into play. There are other elements to help increase the gunslinger’s likelihood of success, such as a skill tree and several buffs that are purchasable through different shops. The skill tree is somewhat small, but offers a surprising amount of flexibility in the gunslinger’s play style. One may prefer to bolster their ammo capacity and bullet damage to help make them an unstoppable cowboy juggernaut. On the other side, the player could target their main strategy as health regeneration, which would allow them to regain health from defeated enemies and ammo crates. Dust & Neon does a fantastic job at giving the player the option to defeat enemies how they see fit. Yet, this choice becomes less relevant as the gunslinger encounters the six uninspired boss fights. Each boss typically has their own unique weapon – an arm blade, a massive Gatling gun, or a defensive shield – but they lack the creativity of the game’s predominant gameplay. The typical nature of finding cover and defeating enemies one by one through strategy goes out the window during these moments. Instead, it’s replaced by spongy bosses that need to be pumped full of lead while the gunslinger runs about. There are a few moments in the boss encounters where some puzzle-like problems present themselves, such as shooting barrels to destroy an enemy’s shield, but none that made these experiences overtly enjoyable. Lastly, Dust & Neon does have some small performance issues on Nintendo Switch. There were two separate occasions where all buildings, ammo, loot boxes, and environmental objects completely disappeared. It didn’t prevent completing the mission, but the lack of visibility made it quite challenging.

The moment-to-moment gameplay requires thoughtful decisions and patience, which results in epic shootouts, satisfying gun mechanics, and a solid progression system. While the boss fights might leave some players asking for more, the overall experience of leading a legendary gunslinger to victory is one most won’t forget. The Nintendo Switch’s specs are withered compared to the competing consoles. This means artists and game devs must get creative and have some ingenuity when it comes to rendering. Dust & Neon aims for a lurid, neon cel-shaded style that makes it look like the kind of art you would have seen on action-figure packing from the 1980s. Characters and enemies have defined silhouettes and associated color pallets that make them stand out from the busy and often chaotic level geometry. Crucial items are readable and needable- especially since the shootouts with big bounties in Dust & Neon can be as brutal as a bucking bronco. As a mysterious cybernetic gunslinger, the player is sent out by a loopy scientist to go collect bounties on some rowdy mechanical desperados. The setting is implied to be some kind of post-apocalyptic wasteland where there are almost no humans left, just roaming robots. The player can’t run up to the boss bounties and try to retire them; each one is gated behind a rank that gamers must reach. To raise the gunslinger’s rank, players will have to play through stages that can have several variations of the same kind of mission. The missions include having to kill all the enemies, kill specific enemies, find the safe on the train, go blow up some reactors, and so on. Dust & Neon shows a lack of imagination by most of the missions not mattering since the core gameplay is squarely focused on shoot-outs and dodging gunfire. It does not matter what the game wants the player to do, expect to by running, dodging, and blasting robots every time. Dust & Neon‘s greatest downfall is the lack of variety. The repetitive gameplay makes it only enjoyable in shorter sessions before the dreadful tedium sucks the fun out of the experience. The core experience is easily reduced to running through samey randomized levels and shooting baddies, with only a handful of boss fights to break up the repetition. There are only three weapon types and they are all functionally the same due to how the randomization works. It is very possible to acquire a shotgun with a narrow spread and long range. With the appropriate upgrades, this shotgun can replace the functionality of a rifle or a handgun. This scenario is purely theoretical since every weapon is randomized, but it can happen with any of the three weapon types and it did happen on more than one occasion. Dying is a slap on the wrist, which is unusually forgiving; you barely lose anything and only your weapons are lost. The cash and upgrade cores will pile up no matter how much you die. Losing all your weapons also does not matter much in Dust & Neon since players will be constantly finding guns all the time and the stat doesn’t feel dramatically different.

Death Is Only The Begnning.

So long as players upgrade the kiosk that gives away free guns at the lab, there will be hardly any need for the gunshop robot. The money is better spent on cocktails or minblowers for temporary stat boosts. Dust & Neon‘s gameplay is repetitious and simple, but it is not tedious. The playability and sensory feedback from dashing, going into cover, and shooting feel very fluent for a 30fps Switch game. The most defining aspect of Dust & Neon is its reloading system which fetishizes slamming a bullet into a well-greased chamber. By far the most important stat of any weapon in the game is capacity. In Dust & Neon, every individual bullet and shell has to be loaded into the chamber by tapping a button and this is visually represented on screen with a close-up of the reload animation. This stylistic touch makes Dust & Neon stand out and emphasizes the importance of ammo in this game since running out is a very real possibility. The gunslinger won’t ever be out of ammo for long. Ammo crates are strewn about like jars of pee in Howard Huhges’ home, but don’t always expect to be able to get some when being overwhelmed by foes coming from all directions. There is a flow to the gun battles and they spike when you least expect it. There’s also an AI who features in a tutorial and pops up throughout each level at gated bottlenecks whose name is, unimaginatively, “ROB.OT.” It’s an example of Dust & Neon’s quirky tone, which seems to grasp for something on the level of Enter the Gungeon but doesn’t have the worldbuilding chops to elevate its vision, instead relying on western clichés and puddle-deep humor to move its stagecoach along.

At least Dust & Neon’s gameplay is immediately graspable, a matter of scrabbling around in a fixed isometric view which is at times visually reminiscent of Weird West. Players duck behind cover, pop out to aim, and blast anything on the screen that moves. When a gun is out of bullets, it needs to be manually reloaded, one single bullet at a time into a nice gun animations which takes up 1/5th of the screen. Each randomized weapon features clips of varying size, so some guns may need to be reloaded constantly whereas others can fire off a few extra shots. Reserves are constrained, even in Dust & Neon’s later hours, but ammo boxes clutter every inch of the environment. A pistol, a shotgun, and a rifle type are soon unlocked for discovery and use, with stronger versions of each available for purchase in between levels. Otherwise, it’s up to RNG to deliver a good one with good stats in a loot crate. Sadly, no other elemental effects or special secondary weapons are available, and firefights in the later game are busier but otherwise identical. Most roguelite systems are present and accounted for here, including permanent unlocks, base and character upgrades, and some pricey optional randomizers which grant slight buffs and debuffs for a single mission. Dust & Neon has studied its genre closely and replicated what players might expect, but also shows its limitations in terms of the world texture, the diversity of its mission objectives, and the brainless XP grind of its endgame. Dust & Neon’s maps are not procedurally generated (though their contents and mobs are randomized), and written descriptions of guns are dry placeholders which were never updated for the full release. Each of them amount to a random unfunny and sarcastic joke about what guns do.

Dust & Neon’s mission types are also wholly uninteresting and take far too long to clear, other than the train raids. In those missions, players rumble through three long trains riding alongside each other, clearing each car of enemies and grabbing money before briskly moving along, in what are probably the brightest spots in the game’s campaign. Sabotage missions, on the other hand, require crawling through enormous maps looking for power stations, fighting waves of enemies, pressing a button, then destroying two arbitrary power cells before plodding ahead to the next. It’s quickly draining, and these missions are best avoided altogether. At least the bosses are somewhat more interesting. W. Elder is a particularly fun example, a puzzle boss who traps the player in a room with different arrangements of moving lasers and spiked floors. Each Dust & Neon boss fight unlocks harder versions for later encounters, though it was difficult to discern any difference in repeated runs, and their related missions are as lengthy and uninspired as any non-train-raid levels. Much like the rest of the game, Dust & Neon’s bosses pretend that they’re interesting, but are absent of charm or character. Then there are the final bosses who require an arbitrary number of level-ups to reach, forcing players to chew through repetitive missions and farm XP, a task which only brings the game’s flaws more readily to the surface.   1. Open the Start menu (Windows ‘flag’ button) in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  2. At the bottom of the Start menu, type Folder Options into the Search box, then press the Enter key.
  3. Click on the View tab at the top of the Folder Options window and check the option to Show hidden files and folders (in Windows 11, this option is called Show hidden files, folders, and drives).
  4. Click Apply then OK.
  5. Return to the Start menu and select Computer, then double click Local Disk (C:), and then open the Program Files folder. On some systems, this folder is called ‘Program Files(x86)’.

  1. First you will need YUZU Emulator. Download it from either Unfitgirl, .. Open it in WinRar, 7ZIP idk and then move the contents in a folder and open the yuzu.exe.
  2. There click Emulation -> Configure -> System -> Profile Then press on Add and make a new profile, then close yuzu
    Inside of yuzu click File -> Open yuzu folder. This will open the yuzu configuration folder inside of explorer.
  3. Create a folder called “keys” and copy the key you got from here and paste it in the folder.
  4. For settings open yuzu up Emulation -> Configure -> Graphics, Select OpenGL and set it to Vulkan or OpenGL. (Vulkan seems to be a bit bad atm) Then go to Controls and press Single Player and set it to custom
  5. Then Press Configure and set Player 1 to Pro Controller if you have a controller/keyboard and to Joycons if Joycons. Press Configure and press the exact buttons on your controller After you’re done press Okay and continue to the next step.
  6. Download any ROM you want from Unfitgirl, .. After you got your File (can be .xci or .nsp) create a folder somewhere on your PC and in that folder create another folder for your game.
  7. After that double-click into yuzu and select the folder you put your game folder in.
  8. Lastly double click on the game and enjoy it.
