A few technical issues, at times wonky English translation, and some weird UI/control decisions (it doesn’t work very well with Playstation controllers by default, Xbox is definitely the goto here if you have it).

I’ve played six hours so far

But if you can get beyond those initial turn offs, what this game DOES have is a fantastic atmosphere and world, with a solid combat system and really fun/neat upgrades. It’s a small team developed game for sure, this isn’t AAA quality by any means, but there’s definitely a lot of love and effort put into this. Considering the low price, the value is there. Definite thumbs up Lots of people calling it clunky and I *guarantee* it’s because of a few key animations: the stomping on enemies while they’re down animation,  I mentioned getting locked into the the backstab animation, but it’s been fixed! Or maybe I just never tried to dodge roll out of it before? Either way, devs are supporting the game post launch, which is great) The rest of the combat is very fluid. But man. Those moments take me out of it. There are a few other bugs. Some dude offered to open a shortcut at one point for 20k gold. I said sure, I had the gold to spare. He opened it, but never charged me. I’m pretty sure that’s happened a few times in other situations. there was a bugged door that I mentioned here, but this has been fixed since posting!) The exploration thus far feels pretty linear. Overall this is a serviceable metroidvania style game, although I would say it’s probably a bit less of a MV than it is a 2D-Soulslike. The game does feature a decently sized world map with fast travel points and a hub to upgrade your character. And while the zones that make up the level do provide you with some degree of freedom to wander around inside of them, the zones themselves are connected in a somewhat linear fashion. There are not many unlockable exploration abilities in the game in general, as the game starts you with double jump, by the end of the first area you pretty much have all movement based abilities. The extent of the searching around usually comes in the form of looking for keys rather than permanent powers. One of my personal beefs with a lot of these 2D-Soulslike games is that they also feel pointlessly clunky in a poor attempt to recapture what the devs think what makes up the genre. Thankfully, this game does not all into that trap. The controls are pretty well for me on KB+M, and the game features full remapping of all keys, including the ability for me to hotkey the thumb buttons on my mouse which often gets overlooked.

A hidden gem with some moderate flaws

This means you are never really losing because you are wrestling with inputs. The character always does what I want him to do. My main issue with the game is that fairly early on, your ability to improve your character is locked not just behind farming currency, but upgrades start to require rare materials. I found these materials to be way too rare, and as a result my ability to level up my HP and stamina late into the game was throttled hard due to a lack of essential materials. This forced me to go back and try to farm monsters only for the hopes of finding these. Weapons also work the same way, which leads to a hesitance to upgrade not knowing what new weapon you might find later. The game would do well to make these a little more common or add a shop where they can be purchased even if at a high price. Ironically, I found the most of the weapons I used at the end of the game were ones I found fairly early on. There are optional dungeons, but the main dungeons you go through seem to be happening in a very set order. I tend to like metroidvanias to have a more open exploration element to them, that’s one of the key draws of the genre. There are some invisible enemies that flicker into view. There’s a tell that they’re there–your droid gets a little exclamation point warning you–which adds to the horror element. These enemies don’t do much damage, so they’re not unfair or cheap or anything. I just wish the tell was bigger or had more contrast. There are powerup towers that grant you temporary abilities that last until you die. At first I felt like this was a bad attempt to slap roguelike elements onto the thing, but then later I found the place where you open up your skill tree and realized those towers gave me the ability to test out powers before committing to them, so it was a cool decision and one I haven’t seen done in other games. There was definitely a lot of thought and love that went into the little things in this game. Weapons are fun and feel. The big ones feel like they have weight to them. Bosses are fun. The bulk of the game is stuff I’m enjoying more than most indie metroidvanias, which is why I’m calling it a hidden gem. It feels like they got the game to where they wanted it to be, but should have maybe done a big bugfix patch before 1.0. If they do that, it’s in my top 10 indie metroidvanias. I know I spent a lot of time listing flaws here.

Great dev support

This is an early review, I’ve put about 5-6 hours into the game but for some reason steam isn’t showing it properly. First off, the art/animations are very good. They remind me of the stop motion animation from Robocop/Robocop 2, specifically the Cain robot from Robocop 2. The bosses are especially good. The gameplay in terms of combat/movement is pretty tight. Weapons are responsive, gun feels good, rolling feels good, movement feels good. The only issue is platforming, which can be weird due to how quickly your character can move, and I’ve had a few issues grabbing ledges unintentionally. Not a big deal tbh. It’s enjoyable to play overall. Environmental hazards are a bit rough, you will die to them, but the penalty for death is not particularly high, so it’s not a huge deal. You’ll definitely be “surprised” by a few at first though 😉 There are some minor display bugs, but I haven’t ran into anything game-breaking yet. The game world is fairly good, but can get repetitive, although I’m still early in the game. Enemy variety seems to change a bit with each new area, and while I haven’t explored a whole lot, I hope that continues. Enemy AI is just OK  Airport CEO

Some of the regular enemies are very dumb, and very easy to stun lock, others have basic attack patterns, all are very easy to deal with once you learn their patterns. Bosses so far are pretty good. They’ll seem tough at first, but they’re fair. Use everything you have and you’ll be fine.  Weapon variety seems good so far, a combination of a gun and a melee weapon. Gun is super powerful right now, maybe too much so. Ammo is technically limited, but I can’t imagine running out unless you use the automatic rifle. Melee weapons all have a unique move set and a unique attack ability, which is interesting. Everything can be upgraded, and augments (fire/lightning/poison/something else I’m probably forgetting) can be added to weapons. I haven’t done this yet though. There are consumable weapons (grenades, turrets, etc), but they are limited to what you can find. Still relatively abundant since enemies drop them. You can get other abilities from spots in the game which seem to randomly give you a choice of three abilities or items, some of which are very good. So far there seems to be a lot of variety with these, unfortunately you lose them on death. You also have your own drone.

I’ve picked up one extra drone so far, one has a stun ability, another a missile. It seems that they can be upgraded, and more drones can likely be found later in the game. You can’t lose this on death, and they’re very useful so far. The story is not great, which seems mostly due to the poor english translation. They really need to get a native speaker to go over everything and rewrite all of the dialogue. This isn’t a huge deal for me personally, since I’m usually focused more on gameplay, but don’t expect a CrossCode level narrative going in. There are basic quests from various factions (I’ve only found one so far?) which give you some direction in the game, NPCs to kill, items to get, etc, and some NPCs you can find, but their dialogue seems very limited. Map is pretty good. It would be nice if there was a way to view the entire world map from the individual area maps. Teleport locations, bank, and a few other things are labeled. Some boundaries are unclear, but overall it’s fine. General UI can be a bit janky, a dedicated map button would be nice, but it’s not a huge time waster, and you aren’t wasting time sorting through inventory junk, so not a big deal for me.
