Beat Slayer takes place in a dystopian future version of Berlin, which has been taken over by a suited fiend named Dietrich. Beyond being a freedom fighter, main character Mia has a personal stake in this battle. Dietrich has kidnapped her brother, so Mia is fighting to save the world and her only family. To win the day, she has to run through Dietrich’s army of robots and maintain her rhythm in order to survive. It’s a basic story, one in which Mia gets a full supporting cast. Unfortunately, there isn’t a lot about the outside world, the underground bunker, or Mia’s crew that feels particularly imaginative. None of the characters feel interesting, and by my fifth run, I had become far less interested in what any of them had to say. Mia’s dialogue isn’t much better, as she shoehorns in classic music references frequently enough that it starts to sound forced after a while. “I see dead robots!” she squeaks. “Only dead robots are good robots!” she fumbles. “I’m here to kick ass and… that’s it!” she blurts. It’s enough to drive you mad after a while, especially when the very nature of the game is to repeat everything ad infinitum. As a Hadeslike (and yes, between this, Realm of Ink and Sworn, the term “Hadeslike” will be fully coined by the end of 2024), Beat Slayer sees you embark on run after run, getting stronger and further each time. rFactor 2 

Returning after being defeated will open up new dialogue with the drew at Mia’s base, allowing you to upgrade your abilities and extend Mia’s health. There are only three weapons to choose from up to now, and honestly the starting fire axe is the simplest and most effective. When out in the field, Beat Slayer is ostensibly a rhythm-action game, but there’s a flaw, and it’s a fairly big one. See, you don’t really need to do anything to the beat at all. In order to build up your “Drive” and unleash an Ultimate the game tells you that you need to keep the beat. But I tested simply mashing the button and Mia keeps the beat on her own. There’s no real benefit to maintaining the beat beyond the TanzenReich effect, which boosts your damage until you miss a hit or take one. But simply dodging, kicking, and attacking is more than enough to get through. Set in a dystopian 90s-inspired Berlin, Beat Slayer puts you in control of Mia, a music lover on a mission. You see, her brother has stupidly left the safety of the group’s hideout, and is now presumed to be being held captive by Deitrich, a former musician who now controls the city with an army of robots. And so, there’s only one thing for you to do: you’re going to go out and get your brother back, smashing as many robots on the way as possible. The Last Clockwinder
