Yes, nearly two decades since AquaNox 2: Revelation Digital Arrow and THQ have revived and reimagined the world of Aqua once again. In a dystopian and somewhat soggy future, a crew of cryogenically frozen submarine pilots find themselves amongst a loose network of settlements at the bottom of the ocean after dear old humankind completely screwed up the surface. No matter that it’s taken all this time to get the game made, Aquanox Deep Descent is more than worth the wait. Because it’s a reboot of the whole franchise any new players won’t need to have played the series from its origins in the old DOS game Archimedean Dynasty to enjoy it but there’s no denying that having enjoyed the adventures of Emerald “Dead Eye” Flint and William Drake in the previous games, this one felt like pulling on a comfortable old jumper. This time though, we find ourselves in the game as a crew of cryogenically frozen submariners that are woken by a mad old guy who doesn’t give you any time at all or any explanation as to what the hell he’s doing or why before you’re arse deep in a watery gunfight and running off to the enormous submarine his captain owns. It’s from here that the fun really begins as you find your crew heading off to track down a bluff old cove by the name of Nemo. Currents, inertia and buoyancy all have an effect on the way your little submersible behaves, especially in the bigger subs. Your crew of Kaelen, the former pirate, Nabila, a former spy who refused to shoot innocents during one of her missions, Hannah, a one-time US military officer, and Fedor, a successful scientist are pretty much cardboard cutouts but that can be forgiven most of the time. The partially open world nature of the game allows for plenty of exploration, and delving into caves and wrecks deep in the benthic regions the game inhabits but it can get pretty tiring after a while. It’s worth the effort though as while some upgrades and new ships are locked behind story progression, more toys are out there to be found by the curious. Happily, no matter how far you follow the linear progression of the story missions you can always backtrack and have a poke about in a side mission or three if you find yourself short on resources. Even with all the bells and whistles bolted on to your ship, you’re not going to find any of the missions a milk run. As the game has a nasty habit of sending the mad guys at you from all sorts of directions and they have no problem at all with blindsiding you en masse. The combat, while enjoyable and nuanced (the charge and dash functionality is going to be a VERY good friend) can be a little repetitive when you know that a mission is going to be nothing more than go here

Not that this is anything more than a downside of the whole genre and at least keeping your head on a swivel and watching for dayglo sharks and subs lurking in the murk means you don’t really notice the repetition overmuch. ll in all, the varied biomes, the exploration, the dystopian story and the clever application of underwater physics make Aquanox Deep Descent a worthwhile use of your time, even if a couple of things can get a little underwhelming after a while. The player or players, as the campaign can also be played in co-op with up to four other pilots, take control of a submarine with the necessary weaponry to face the multiple dangers of the dark and wet world of Aqua. The campaign develops mostly linearly, although some side missions arise from time to time, while online multiplayer is also offered which I was not able to try due to the pre-release code. For a playthrough of the campaign on Normal difficulty level, playing some of the side missions as well, I needed a total of about 15 hours, so we can clearly say that the duration is satisfactory. On the subject of quality I would say that I enjoyed the campaign for the most part and any complaints are mainly focused on the level of production which is expectedly relatively low for a Kickstarter funded title. The environments, the missions and the general look of the game are very decent, especially the background graphics impressed me in several places with their bright colors, but the limited budget is noticeable in areas such as the (indulgently average) voice acting and the slightly animated but mostly static cutscenes. A very positive event, With the exception of a small dose of exploration to find resources to build upgrades for your ship, the rest of the gameplay is focused on fighting against enemy submarines and undersea monsters.

Classic multiplayer modes

The physics model is mainly arcade but has touches of simulation to make it feel like you’re in water, with inertia affecting the boat’s movements to some extent. Combat isn’t at its best when you’re up against multiple opponents and you have to make the most of available space and weaponry, but it loses points in the AI ​​department, with several opponents refusing to do special maneuvers and usually favoring long-range sniping or in continuous close fire while sitting still. Details such as lines of dialogue that foreshadow an important script development do not end prematurely, or cutscenes integrate smoothly with the action and do not leave logical gaps. Details like enemy AI activating when it detects a shot coming towards it and not sitting idle when the player fires a long range weapon. The last few paragraphs had a negative tone but I must stress that my experience with Aquanox Deep Descent was for the most part decidedly positive. The campaign is interesting, the missions offer plenty of action, there is variety in boats and equipment, and the seabed environment is beautifully rendered. I’m just slightly disappointed that Digital Arrow couldn’t, or maybe didn’t have the resources to push the game from decent to the next level. Of course, it is debatable whether this is feasible for a genre that is no longer mainstream, so necessarily the development budget will be comparatively limited. The Aquanox Deep Descent story is quite engaging, especially if one has an appreciation for dystopian tales, featuring the right amount of mystery that will keep the player pushing forward until the end. The underwater world setting is also well-realized, with multiple competing factions ranging from political alliances to pirate factions that make it feel alive and believable. The main characters may not feel particularly original, as they mostly fall into well-known tropes, but they are decently developed and they are entertaining enough to never feel too predictable. While the engaging story can be more than enough to make some play Aquanox Deep Descent, it’s the gameplay that will seal the deal for most, and in this regard, the game definitely delivers, despite some issues that are inherent to the genre as a whole. Right after waking from cryogenic sleep, your team will be placed into a technologically advanced underwater ship capable of resisting the oceanic pressure and make underwater travel possible. The ship controls in a very peculiar way that requires a little bit of adjusting and some practice, especially for combat, as mastering movement and knowing when to use pressure charges to dash sideways, upwards, or downwards is extremely important to avoid receiving too much damage and complete missions successfully. Thankfully, the game features an extremely informative optional tutorial mission that teaches everything there is to know about the movement and combat basics, properly preparing the player for what is to come in the real game. Aquanox Deep Descent is at its heart a semi open-world game featuring different medium-sized locations which feature, in turn, underwater cities and bases and plenty of optional areas that players have to go out of their way to explore. Despite the open world-ish gameplay, Aquanox Deep Descent can be a very linear experience if players stick to the main story missions, as they bring you from one area to the next pretty quickly.

Backtracing, however, is always possible in case you want to gather more resources or complete sub-missions that reward players not only with credits but also with additional character development for the main cast. Minor development, to be honest but welcome nonetheless. Exploration, while needed to get the additional resources to power-up and customize your underwater combat vessel, can get stale after a while, as the locations, tunnels, and labyrinths don’t look all that different from one another, but thankfully combat manages to allievate this issue. Enemy variety is good, with a lot of different ship classes and underwater creatures, and so is weapon variety. Your ship can equip two different weapons at the same time, one on the left and one on the right, as well as two different modules that grant access to special abilities like a devastating dashing attack, a missile barrage, floating mines, and so on. Finding the right loadout is where the real fun begins, as there are some extremely powerful combinations that can take down every opponent with ease. Additionally, regular weapons can be switched on the fly, so it’s possible to adapt on the fly to any situation and any opponent. This versatility makes the Aquanox Deep Descent combat extremely fun.
