A poetic coming-of-age story inspired by New Caledonia.Tchia is a little kid living on an archipelago based on the real world South Pacific island of New Caledonia. SOUL JUMPING

Tchia’s special gift lets you take control of any animal or object you can find. With over 30 animals and hundreds of objects to choose from, fly around as a bird, explore the ocean as a fish or dig for treasures as a dog! Use your unique soul-jumping abilities to explore solve puzzles, and uncover secrets.For as long as her soul meter is filled, Tchia can control the things she possesses, creatures like birds and dolphins and crabs and objects like oil drums, rocks, and coconuts. EXPLORATION & TRAVERSAL

And it’s not just useful for travel, collecting items, and avoiding a fall. At one point while exploring I found a small opening in the side of a cliff, too small to fit through even when crouching. I suddenly remembered I had a crab in my backpack, so I plucked it out, soul-jumped into it, and scuttled sideways through the opening. Once inside I exited the crab and opened a hidden chest. The crab, unfortunately, had skittered away and vanished, and I thought for a moment I was now trapped in this little cave. But there were some small rocks on the ground, so I jumped into one and rolled back out through the gap. Infiltration and exfiltration are a snap when you can possess almost everything you can see.Jump and glide your way across a vast archipelago and use the Tricks system to perform cool stunts and dives. The free climbing mechanic lets you ascend anything in the world without restriction including any physics-driven tree. UKULELE

Just jamming by yourself or playing alongside other inhabitants of the archipelago, your fully playable ukulele will be a trusty companion throughout the game. Use it at key story moments during rhythm sections, or play unlockable melodies at any point in the open world to trigger special events such as attracting animals, triggering rainfall. The more I do it the more fun it becomes. I can chain my soul-jumps, going from racing through the offshore waves toward the beach as a dolphin, then ejecting myself from the water and possessing a passing seagull to take flight before my feet hit the sand. I’ve been a deer that can thunder across the island much faster than any human, I’ve been dogs (they’re useful to possess when I need to dig something up) and chickens (I can lay an egg, turn back into myself, and pop the egg in my backpack), and even a cow—you can make them poop out explosive turds, good for blowing things up.

STORY & MUSIC

Take Tchia on a heartfelt adventure and meet a diverse cast of characters inspired by New Caledonian cultures. Fully animated cutscenes voiced in traditional language will punctuate your journey while an original orchestral score infused with local sounds creates a unique and immersive world. Tchia’s archipelago is quietly designed around these skills of yours. Because you can dive, the seabed is alive with pastel coral and clamshells fat with pearls waiting to be pinched. Because you can fling yourself from one tree to the next, there are forests of all different kinds of density, including some lovely marshy spots. Because you can climb, the islands have a generous spine of humped mountain running through their heartlands, like the ridged backs of sleeping dinosaurs. There are villages with huts to hop from, industrial areas, and a decent-sized city. If you’re after a sense of the scale, a confusing – sorry – comparison with Just Cause 2 might be useful. It’s not as big as Just Cause 2 in any way, but given the size of its child protagonist, Tchia has that same Just Cause 2 sense of being really quite surprisingly vast. A couple of great islands and a lovely stretch of water around them. There’s much more territory here than you might expect.

CUSTOMIZATION & ITEMS

Stylize Tchia’s clothing and boat with hundreds of unlockable cosmetic items ranging from a traditional look to the most over the top options. You will also unlock useful and fun tools along the way such as a flashlight, slingshot, compass, camera. So what do you do here? I’m going to divide these things in two, even though in the game you should never do that, and absolutely let things flow together in a wonderful tapestry of foolish whims and passing distractions. The first thing: Tchia has much more of a story than I was expecting, and it’s not remotely the kind of story I was imagining. I saw the art and played a gentle demo and thought I was in for something a bit like A Short Hike: a playful exploration of landscape and its pleasures, threaded along a gentle narrative. Instead, this is pretty intense stuff. Kidnappings! Mythical gods! People getting knives in the face (srsly)! Children getting eaten! What this amounts to is a series of missions running through the game that can sometimes feel a bit like you’ve been dropped into Far Cry.

NEW CALEDONIA

The world of Tchia was inspired by New Caledonia, A tiny island in the Pacific Ocean, homeland of Awaceb’s co-founders. Inspiration was taken from the rich and varied local landscapes, cultures, music, languages, folklores and traditions and was used to create a fictional world and to tell a universal story for all to understand and enjoy. The characters are voiced by local talent in traditional languages, and subtitled in many languages including English, French, Russian, Chinese, German, and more. At one point latish in proceedings I was scoping out some industrial terrain with my camera, prior to working my way in and smashing everything up and A Short Hike felt very distant indeed. Far Cry? There’s that same range of approaches that defines Ubisoft’s series, that same willingness to let you try something rash and live with the consequences. No guns or getaway cars, sure, but you can soul jump, so that means rocks, exploding rocks, lanterns and fire propagation, and then hopping a pigeon to give yourself some distance.
