The kind of game where you can just sit back with some friends and simultaneously get unreasonably frustrated and laugh at the same time. The only problem I really encounter with party games is the difficulty in balancing single player and multiplayer modes. While it’s always more fun to play with friends, sometimes you just want to play by yourself. Thankfully, Super UFO Fighter, from VV-LABO, is one of those games that manages to be engaging for solo and party play.I was pleasantly surprised that Super UFO Fighter had a campaign mode, with a story and everything. Of course, this being a party game, don’t expect some deep, incredible story. Still, what’s there is enjoyably goofy and light-hearted in the best of ways. The titular Super UFO Fighter is the number one sport in the galaxy, with everybody from space princesses to mad scientists taking part. As you battle your way across the galaxy, while playing as several different characters, you’ll find yourself menaced by a dark fighter with bad intentions. And, well, that’s pretty much it for the story in the campaign mode. Like I said, it won’t be winning any awards for writing, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad – far from it. It’s delightfully silly and a welcome respite from some of the deep, dark, heavy narratives of many of the games I tend to play. Gameplay is, of course, where Super UFO Fighter shines. Your objective is fairly simple and straightforward: find the target item and drop it into your goal. Each fight is made up of two to three rounds, and a round ends when you manage to get the target item into your goal. The target item is shown in the top middle of the screen, and is hidden within one of the capsules that drop from the sky. Capsules which, by the way, look suspiciously like Pokéballs. But I digress. To break open the capsules, you’ll need to attack them, and each fighter has their own unique attack. While they all shoot downwards, that’s where their similarities end. For example, one fighter shoots a bomb that you can control the direction of, another shoots down a series of music notes, and another shoots shurikens at an angle. There are three types of capsules to break open: ones that contain regular items, ones that have special items, and one that will hold the target item. Regular items can be grabbed and moved with your “shwoop beam” which is essentially a tractor beam. By hoovering up regular items and dropping them into your goal, you’ll force a wall to rise upwards on your opponent’s side of the field, making it much harder for them to get items (and especially the target item) into their goal. Breaking open a special capsule will give you an edge against your opponent. Special capsules may be an item, such as a bumper you can place in front of their goal, or a status effect, such as reversing controls. Finally, there’s the target item.

Party Like An Extraterrestrial

Usually significantly larger and heavier than any other item, it’s much harder to get into your goal. Whoever has the target item in their shwoop beam is defenseless against attacks that will leave you stunned, and it’s possible to have the target item stolen from you before you can get it in your goal. Aesthetically, I literally cannot find a single complaint for Super UFO Fighter. The pixel art is absolutely delightful and charming, and the color palette pops in the best of ways. The music is simple but catchy, and goes perfectly with each stage. The levels are small but well-designed, and have some of their own gimmicks, like gravity reversing or the stage going pitch black save for spotlights sweeping across the screen. There’s very little to criticize about Super UFO Fighter. It’s a game that’s easy to learn and challenging to master. With campaign mode, a versus mode, and a “hot potato” mode, there’s plenty to keep players entertained. While it may seem simple on the surface, Super UFO Fighter is incredibly entertaining and only gets more challenging the longer you play it. If you’re looking for a new party game to play alone or with a friend, I definitely recommend giving this game a shot. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. In this very simple game, one button controls your tractor beam and the other controls your attacking mechanic, which you must use to stun the enemy UFO, burst capsules, use temporary power-ups, and throw objects into one goal or the other. There are two main modes: a story mode and an arcade mode essentially. The story mode takes you through an innocuous tale with increasingly challenging levels and occasionally alternating goals as you play as and against different UFO/alien characters. Each chapter will have you playing as a different UFO, each with a different attack ranging from short-range triple music note blasts to opposable bombs and giant pile drivers. Their mechanics are joyfully diverse, so you have a swatch of options to choose from when you unlock new UFOs at the end of chapters and take them into the arena against other players or computers. It’s just that I don’t know how long this game could really entertain me in the end. I’d describe it as the type of game that I might have been enamored with on the long car ride from New Jersey to Long Island in my youth on my Game Boy. It would have entertained me and perhaps a cousin together if it were among my few options. But with the endless possibilities for games I could pick up now, Super UFO Fighter isn’t giving me a ton of reason to pick this one. A principal reason is simply that its name is misleading. This isn’t a fighting game of really any kind. Some mechanics warrant contact between players, but it’s an objective-based action game, not a fighter in the end.

Pixel Perfect

Letting the name fool me initially into thinking otherwise left me disappointed when the final product was ultimately just a sort of basketball-type game with extra odds and ends. Again, it’s not bad for what it is necessarily; there are a good few moments of actual trial and triumph in its unique gameplay. Unfortunately, it also feels like victory and defeat is sometimes based on luck more than skill, making the game increasingly disinteresting as the difficulty ramps up. I wondered throughout whether a slightly larger arena may have alleviated any of that particular concern. The whole thing takes up just the size of the screen and leaves very little room for maneuvering between falling objects, tractor beams, and otherwise. The sound design is mostly a high point, with a nice 8-bit soundtrack to get you pumping. Its downfall is its overuse of an airhorn sound constantly. It got annoying quickly. Visually, the game is strong. Its characters are unique, the colors are well-stratified to stand out from each other, and the UFO designs are all pretty cute. Super UFO Fighter is neither super nor a fighter. It’s a perfectly fine game that could entertain for a little bit on your own or with a friend, but a party game this is certainly not, and neither is its difficulty finely tuned enough to feel engrossing on either end of the difficulty spectrum. A sharp pixel-art aesthetic and an approach to game structure that learns from titans of the genre. Past the coat of paint, though? There really isn’t much to find. In Super UFO Fighter, you control a spaceship in a crane game. Since these are widely known as “UFO Catchers” in Japan, it’s a pun we’ve seen a lot. Fundamentally, though, this takes the tractor beam and physics-heavy object system of HAL Laboratory’s Part Time UFO and puts it into a head-to-head battle arena format. Your job is to root through the gachapon capsules, breaking them open until you find the trophy item and getting that special prize to your chute. In the meantime, you can collect common items to raise your opponent’s wall and make it harder for them to reach the chute. You can also strike your foe with an attack from above. And… that’s it! We’ve described the whole game. We didn’t find anything in the options that fundamentally changed our strategy. There are more “arena” options, but we found them largely indistinguishable from one another. The three characters — Acute, Adamsia and Lulu — are endearing! But their largely-cosmetic combat differences don’t change any gameplay decisions. It’s a real shame, because this game has the sort of trappings that could really dress up a compelling simple core. Much like Money Puzzle Exchanger, Super UFO Fighter has a bright aesthetic. Its characters are one-note, but instantly endearing.

Shwoop Your Way to Victory

The menus and options feel like they were forged by a student of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, using placement and color to guide and provide hierarchy instead of providing a simple list. We guess it’s good that what’s here tends to work? We were able to test the online functionality, and it worked well. This is the point in the review that we’d typically provide some sort of disclaimer that launch-window servers could be crowded and make conditions worse, but… honestly, we don’t expect that to be a problem. There’s also a single-player mode, held together with character conversations. Unfortunately, to make a mode like this work, the campaign has to have some interesting challenges or progression, something that games like Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 manage with a similar structural approach.Super UFO Fighter could have been a great, fun sandbox in the vein of Stick Fight, Duck Game, or BombSquad. Using a tractor beam and weird objects to accomplish varied tasks? Yeah, great! But as it is, the game lacks the creativity to try anything other than its one trophy grab idea. (Actually, there’s a hot potato mode too, but it’s very easy to break and not worth discussing.) Committing to one game type can work too, right? But that one mode has to be full of nuance and competitive depth. And this game simply doesn’t have that either. The Evil Within 

Party games and couch co-ops never seem to go out of style, and for good reason – they not only distract us from the woes of everyday life, but they also bring us closer to the people around us (or our buddies online). With Super UFO Fighter, you can definitely bond with the people who matter to you most by taking them down in a neon-covered battle for gachapon supremacy even if it makes absolutely no sense. The colorful pixel-art title’s mechanics task you with smashing open capsule toys that fall from the sky as you search for the winning item that will reward you with that sweet, sweet victory. Random junk that you open from the capsules can be beamed up by your spaceship and carried on over to your chute of personal collectibles. When the winning item appears, you’ll have to nab it before your opponent does to win the round. The catch is that your fearsome foe can swipe your prized possession right from underneath you quite literally. Items you’ve captured under your tractor beam can be stolen by your enemy using their own tractor beam, and the battlefield turns into a mad struggle for ultimate possession as you both pull back and forth, each trying to bring a certain item away from the other’s corner. Of course, your suction powers aren’t the only thing you have in your arsenal – you can also use your trusty melee attack to knock your opponent out cold so you can drag that winning item to your chute in peace. This is where the characters of the game come in.

Each unlockable hero features its own unique strengths and weaknesses that suit different playstyles. Lulu is a good all-arounder, while Adamsia moves slowly with a heavy-duty punch that can easily take a foe out of commission. Acute, on the other hand, can zip across the arena like nobody’s business – you can also switch up their colours if you’re looking to spice up your cosmetics during combat. The game features a variety of modes that can cater to solo fighters and co-op partners alike. You can team up with a friend whether locally or online, engage in rowdy battles with them, or journey all by your lonesome through the solo campaign (and find out more about the origins of the characters and unlock them along the way). Super UFO Fighter’s narrative does feel unique, since getting thrust into a space sports game where you Shwoop stuff is a great way to set the context for something as ridiculous as this. The mechanics are simple but fun, and really do offer plenty of opportunities for you to engage in a screaming match with your friends over gachapon capsules of random junk.But while the premise is fun, I honestly felt like it was too easy to get tired of the game, and there wasn’t a compelling enough reason to come back to it. There are plenty of other couch co-ops that are more engaging than this, to be honest, so picking up the game again after a while felt more like a chore to me than something to look forward to.I did enjoy smashing open capsules as a digital way for me to vent out my frustrations on wanting to collect gachapons IRL
