Bought this game one fateful Summer Steam sale, went in blind, and it became one of my favorites. All of it feels like a warm and much-needed hug. I had my 2nd playthrough when I was going through a rough patch in my life, and Spiritfarer became a nice, comfy escape and sort of helped with my grieving process. I definitely recommend this to those who want to play something chill or aren’t really gamers themselves. You may find yourself nearly crying over a mushroom boy, and there’s no shame in that. It’s a beautiful game, gorgeous art, good storylines. BUT I HATE PLATFORMS. It’s meant to be a mellow storytelling/stratgy game, but you get caught in these platform parts, and you can’t get out. You can’t skip them. You just have to jump and jump and if you love a good platforming game, cool. But I don’t get into strategy games to jump around forever on boring platforms over and over again. I love this game until I get to the platforms, and then I turn it off, sometimes for weeks. I may not complete this game because of the platforms. If I had known about the platforms, I’d have skipped it altogether, but now I’m into it. Just make it possible to skip the platforms. It detracts from the story and we didn’t come here to spend stressful hours jumping around forever. But I’m still playing, so. While no game is perfect, Spiritfarer is, at its core, everything I think I could want from the concept of a game: a deep story, told artfully, able to be engaged at multiple levels; gameplay loops which feel organic and meaningful,

But with a sort of lightness to them that keeps you from having to feel frantic or burdened with tedium; eclectic design which is at once soulful and unique, yet still entirely approachable; lively writing which truly brings characters to life as unique individuals, warts and all, completely avoiding even the whiff of them being two-dimensional tropes-on-legs; a thoughtful meshing of its elements which helps the game feel like a true gestalt, rather than in any way a discombobulated frankengame; and–one which few games really can reliably, if ever, accomplish–the ability to create a panoply, a full spectrum, of thought-provoking and emotional moments for the player. People in other reviews warn you that you will cry. They are correct. You may even ugly-cry, possibly repeatedly. But it will be a good kind, a cathartic kind, an almost startlingly real kind. A kind that most video games can only hope they might ever evoke, if they even deign to try. Even now I mist up a bit in recollection, which is impressive, for a story told about imaginary anthropomorphic spirits of people I’ve never actually had in my physical life. I encourage you to visit the game’s website and/or check out the artbook, which is something I don’t think I’ve said about any game before. There are layers and threads to the game which quite subtly underlie the game (but deftly, in a way that you don’t feel an inexplicable hunch that you’re missing them), yet when revealed for what they truly were (as both of the above may do for you in ways the game might not), can be seen in every corner of its grand tapestry. I cannot emphasize enough how much this short, simple, mostly-not-difficult game is a sleeper masterclass in storytelling. Others have complained about the platformer elements of the game, and these complaints are valid: the combination of camera dynamics, control schema, ability functionality, and level designs can make some parts of the game’s platforming frustratingly particular.
