STORY

There’s no overarching story to the game, but there are quest lines which introduce you to the mechanics while teaching you about ancient Rome. The game has a decent conversation system with branching options during speech, which provide backstory. The quests reminded me of MMORPGs. For example, there are characters who will do favours for you after you complete their errands. There are interrogation quests and even fetch quests! Some of these take you to new lands!. All of these quests are excellent at helping at world building. Mini-games gradually get unlocked as you progress through quests. There is gambling, whipping, and archery. The quests are definitely the strongest aspect of this very unique 3D porn game. On the surface, Slaves of Rome looks like a simple trainer game. You train your slaves and sell them for a profit, but it’s more complex than that. For instance, there’s a skill tree which increases your slave’s stats, ie. endurance and stamina. There are two different modes during sex scenes. You can choose the hands-free mode, or you can play minigames. You gain more in-game currency from the minigames, which you use to buy items like whips and dildos for your slaves. The sex minigame is about rhythm. You time your button presses around the same time with your character as he thrusts into the slave’s holes. You complete the minigame by filling up the “cum” bar which allows you to finish the deed by cumming all over your slave at the end. As for the punishment minigame, it’s mindless clicking for around 30 seconds. The minigames get repetitive after a while, sadly. The progression curve is skewed. You have to grind a lot. Every character has a unique skill tree, so the tediousness of the grind depends on the number of slaves you want to train. You’ll also be stuck seeing the whip punishment scene numerous times when farming skill points to unlock new sex positions.

There is a minimap in the game but it is still in a very barebones state. All it shows are the basic structures without showing where the NPCs are. And with the map being so cluttered with houses, it’s practically useless since most of the time you’ll be surrounded by houses with no indication of where your objective is. There are some alignment issues with the models during penetration: The penis will penetrate the side of the vagina when thrusting, dildos penetrate the sides and thighs, fingers penetrate nothing during fingering. There are quite a few sex positions, and the developer is constantly adding more. The characters’ looks and motions are natural enough. The only gripe I have is that the anal option is locked to missionary only. Every time you swap between vaginal sex and anal sex, you’re forced to watch through an unskippable cutscene.

I was not able to get virtual reality working for sex scenes. I was only able to float in the sky and alternate between positions playing out while flailing my two flying hands. I’m not sure whether it is my headset or the game because I was able to get the whip punishment game working. That was a decent VR experience. The whip movement was good and you can feel impact when whipping your slave.
