You can follow the main questline, do a spot of farming and crafting or even capture some monsters like a certain other famous game series. It’s an impressive labour of love made by one solo developer. The most similar comparison people will make looking at the screenshots is Stardew Valley. Serin Fate has a more magical wizardry theme to it though. But does stretching to all these gameplay mechanics make for a magical experience or spell disaster? When you begin the game you are given the option to create your pixelated character. As well as choosing a variety of hairstyles and outfits you can pick between three races. This is quite important as each of the three has specific perks towards aspects of the gameplay. Since I went into the game blind I just went with my gut here and hoped for the best. After that, you are introduced to the game’s story. You are a new wizard ready to take on the world but during your graduation ceremony, some evil cloaked folks come in destroying the Fate Stone, preventing any new witches and wizards from gaining magic. It’s up to you to explore the world to find the Fate Stone shards and restore the magic. From there you are plopped into an incredibly brief tutorial and then the game kinda just leaves you to it. The story is pretty straightforward and the game is filled with tons of NPCs each of which will greet you with a silly voice. Even if the story doesn’t click with you, I highly recommend chatting to absolutely everyone since most of them offer useful advice and even unlock handy tips in your notebook. Farming simulators follow an established formulaic approach that, throughout the years, has proven quite beneficial. There is a smattering of ingredients that meld together seamlessly to create an experience worth having. This genre strives to promote a sense of coziness. It wants to replicate the serene feeling of snuggling underneath a blanket with a hot beverage. Serin Fate craves to nuzzle itself into that niche comfortably but, unfortunately, is a failure at doing so. That potent charm NPCs usually carry in their dialogue is missing. There’s no real opportunity to endear oneself to anyone because everything feels flat. Any information I got was the bare minimum, only ever enough to clue me into the events before pushing forward. No one has substance, which is a disservice to the inherent charisma infused in the pixel aesthetic. Sadly, that’s not the worst of this incohesive plotline.

Hell, when given the primary objective of the journey, the main character doesn’t even fathom the sheer importance of it. Ignoring that the actual premise is generic, the absence of drama or urgency severely bogs it down. As is, nothing is motivating you to the finish line. Nothing had me shackled in suspense or curious. To be fair, there’s an argument that other titles under the same umbrella have that problem, too. The advantage they have, however, is I’d be immersed in the mystery and invest myself in the characters. Serin Fate feels like the epitome of NPCs just happy to be there. They’re faceless entities with dialogue full of meaningless words – that’s no bueno. Worst of all, because several of them aren’t interactable, the core cast is the main contributor to blandness. Personality is mainly lacking, but not all is grim. I need to get this out of the way. Serin Fate has loads to do, crafting, fishing, farming, magic, RPG elements and so on. However, the game does a totally pathetic job of telling the player what you’re meant to be doing. Ok, there is a tutorial that teaches you the basics of battle, movement and a few other things. There needs to be more guidance on what to do, for all the new equipment that you need. I have no problem with trial-and-error style gameplay, but most tell you at least how to use everything. Anyway, now that’s out of the way, let’s get on with the good stuff as there is a shed load of it. Farming Sim With Magic Even with Serin Fate is an ARPG, where you will need to defeat a plethora of enemies with a basic attack and charged attacks. As Serin Fate plays like a SNES styled ARPG. Do not worry, you will not need to go it alone. Magical creatures, called Chimera, will join you in battle. And there are fifty different ones to collect. Chimera helps you fight enemies. Well, most of the damage comes from these creatures. There are loads of magic, as well. In order to cast magic, you press Y and use left and right on the D-Pad. You select up to six elements. Depending on the order you select them, it will change the spell. Spells are a must catch Chimeras. So you have had enough of killing monsters. What else can you do? Not much… There is loads to do. We have farming, mining and crafting, to name a few. Each different activity is a rather involved process. Crafting is a total pain in the arse until you finally figure out how to smelt and cut wood. There are loads of different things to make, I spent WAY TOO long farming and mining. But I can’t help myself.

Setting up my farm, so that all the plots are within a bird feeder range (two squares out), so stop birds eating the seeds, while setting up an irrigation system to keep the seeds watered. Throw in a scarecrow or ten and the farm was taking shape. This only took around two hours. Now, another few hours later, I have most of my back yard covered in different plants that are needed to make things. They linked the RPG elements into all aspects of the game: combat, magic, mining, crafting, and necromancy. The more you use these different aspects, the more they will level up. Allowing your witch to level up and gain buffs in all these areas. On the level up section, each of the aspects are all interlinked, so in order to level up in farming you may need to unlock the adjacent skill in combat. This makes sure that you have to level up all the aspects of your witch. There is way too much to talk about in Serin Fate. You will need to find out for yourself. It is, however, a fantastically deep and fun ARPG. Bar the big glaring quality of life changes needed with how to do most things. But, one person has developed it, so we can let him off this time. When it comes down to the art style, I have zero complains and can only be super siked about it. It kind of follows the art style used in Pokémon, and we all know that this style is still as relevant today as it was a few years ago. Players are familiar with the bright 2D graphics and will guaranteed love it. There is plenty of detail and the characters that you will meet in Serin Fate all look very original and just really cute! The environments that you get to discover are always a pleasure to wander around in, and yes, even to die in. I absolutely loved the enemies and the Chimera (more about this later). Now, when you imagine a soundtrack for this sort of game in your head, you will most definitely get something similar to the sound that’s being used when you’re actually playing the game. It’s a typical (fantasy) RPG kind of music and I’m not even mad about it. It enriches the gameplay in a good way and it’s very enjoyable. There are plenty of sound effects in place to, like a crow flying away, your character walking through grass, or when you engage in combat. Again, it’s your typical sounds that will appear in similar games, but there is a reason these sounds work in these types of games.

Complex stats, calculations & combat build diversity.

Serin Fate is an extensive game, that’s for sure. The Steam page already warns you that you will die a lot, but it honestly never got annoying. You die, get stronger, die, get stronger, and so on. There are 50 Chimera to be caught, a big map to explore, a shitton of enemies to defeat, and an elaborate story to uncover. And of course, there is also the mining, fishing, gardening, and crafting that you can focus on. The spell casting system is also easy to understand and fun to work with. Serin Fate may look like a simple and peaceful game, but I am here to tell you that it’s not and that’s perfectly fine. It offers so much, a little something for everyone, really. Overall gameplay | Because Serin Fate offers a lot of content, I think the gameplay can appeal to a wide variety of players. IF you keep the difficulty in the back of your head, of course. Anyway, you start by creating a character where you get to choose a few basic things like hair style and race (human, serin, val). Along the way, you’ll be able to customize your character a little more, adding masks, capes and more. You’ll follow a storyline in Serin Fate, but you can kind of do as you please if you wish to focus more on individual exploring (first). Rather quickly, you’ll be able to pick between a sword and a staff for your gameplay, but no matter which one you choose, you’ll always be able to perform spells since these are a vital part of the game. You see, spells are not only used in combat, they are also used to capture wild Chimera, to mine or woodcut, meditate, and even to create a growing boost for seeds. It all depends on which spells you find and learn. Notebook | Ah yes, your notebook comes in very handy at all times! In your notebook, you’ll keep track of plenty of things. First and foremost, it’s where you can look at your errands, which are the quests in this game. There isn’t too much information when you’re digging into an errand, but this game is meant to be difficult, so I understand that. Still, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the errand system, but I could work with it.

Second, your notebook keeps track of collections. Here you can consult on everything you’ve ever discovered (after you consume an item so it can be added into your notebook), such as different seeds, fish, and materials. Third, there is the Chimera tab in which you can only see the species of Chimera you’ve caught. Fourth, your notebook has all the spells you’ve learned in it, which is super important. Some spells you’ll often use so you’ll know them by heart. Others, however, will be less frequently used so the notebook comes in quite handy here. Then for those of you who love numbers and tracking everything, there is also a part in the notebook that holds all your records. Statistics here include how many monsters you’ve slain, spells you’ve cast, bugs caught, rocks mined, eggs hatched, combat XP, and so on. And last, we have the cauldroning which has a list of recipes for you to craft like runes or potions.
