Where some games portray Hell as a place of eternal torment, Saints Row IV: Gat Out of Hell’s vision of the Inferno is almost as mundane and silly as its surface world, and a little more fun to explore. A neon-drenched (but decidedly last-gen-looking) new city about half the size of SR4’s Steelport, it’s filled with undead “husks” shambling around and driving hideous junkers, all under the watchful eyes of buff guardian demons. It features depressing-looking businesses (quick, who wants to visit the Sad Cans strip club?) and distinct landmarks (like a Ferris wheel built to drown its riders), all surrounded by a jagged-rock-and-molten-lava motif. It’s also where the President – that is, your protagonist from Saints Row IV – has been kidnapped by Satan himself, thus setting the stage for Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell, a short and entertaining (but strangely paced) standalone expansion. With the President out of action, the focus shifts to tough-as-nails gangster Johnny Gat and hacker Kinzie Kensington. You can swap between the pair at any time (or play them side-by-side in co-op), although the only real difference is in the dialogue you’ll hear; while she lacks his cool knife executions, it turns out Kinzie’s just as capable on the street as Gat. Granted, within the first few minutes of play a halo stolen from Satan bestows more or less the same superpowers from Saints Row IV, with a few key differences. Unfitgirl.COM SEXY GAMES

Telekinesis, for example, has been replaced with Summon, which calls up an annoying imp to latch onto your enemies and explode. Other, more familiar powers now have hell-themed elemental effects, like Blast’s new ability to turn enemies to stone. And not only can Gat and Kinzie run super fast and leap over buildings, but they can actually fly using an pair of angel wings, which add a fun new dimension to exploring Hell, grabbing its endless collectible upgrade orbs, and pursuing its new side activities. You’re introduced to these new powers (and to the supporting cast) in a series of brief but memorable introductory missions, which are really the only time you’ll play through what could be considered a story quest. Once those are done, your purpose is to attract Satan’s attention by completing side activities – a strange design choice that teeters dangerously close to repetitive monotony, but does make side tasks feel more vital and worthwhile. Once you’ve finished a certain number of those tasks, cutscenes will play to advance the story and introduce new hazards – and that’s the pattern you’ll stick with until the final shootout with Satan. It helps that a lot of the side tasks are surprisingly fun. New activities include batting hordes of demonic frat boys into glowing portals, mowing down waves of demons to claim fast-travel points, hunting for hidden glyphs to unlock chests, and flying through high-speed aerial races, most of which are pretty enjoyable even after I’d done them a few times.

Open Hell Day

The highlight, however, is Torment Fraud, which adds a new twist to the familiar ragdoll-into-traffic Insurance Fraud minigame. Here, you’re playing as a condemned soul – complete with a Jane Austen-narrated backstory – out to shave years off your infernal sentence, and as you’re hit by cars in quick succession, you’ll gain the ability to make vehicles explode on contact, which throws you higher into the air and creates ridiculously chaotic chains of wrecked cars and deliberate injuries. It also helps that the story – when it’s in play – is wonderfully goofy, bringing together dead historical figures, familiar faces from earlier Saints Row games, and a wryly out-of-place musical number right in the middle. While the supporting characters come with interesting backstories, however, it would’ve been great to see them fleshed out a bit more; Shakespeare as Hell’s disgraced spymaster is a cool premise, as is Blackbeard’s insistence on living off the grid, but they never really go anywhere beyond their introductions. Couple that with a choice of five short, somewhat unsatisfying endings, and it feels like a lot more narrative and comedy could have been wrung out of Gat Out of Hell’s four- to-six-hour runtime. Devilish new weapons are also fun to discover and play around with. Aside from a selection of familiar guns with demonic makeovers, Gat Out of Hell’s destructive implements are themed after the Seven Deadly Sins, most of which have to be found scattered around the world. Sloth, for example, is represented by a moving easy chair with mounted Gatling guns and rockets that fire when you recline, while Pride is a talking pistol called the Gallows Dodger. Wrath, meanwhile, is nothing less than the Ark of the Covenant, which can suck up enemies and use them as ammo. Some of these are more novel than useful – the Armchair-A-Geddon, for example, moves too slowly to be helpful in a serious firefight – but they’re all an enjoyable change of pace, especially when it comes to random street violence. I love Saints Row IV. It’s funny, silly and, for a game that features a cast of sociopaths, surprisingly warm hearted. It’s also polarising – with some former fans unhappy with the series’ transformation into an absurd comedy ensemble. I’m not one of them, and it’s important you know how much I enjoy the Saints’ last outing, because I don’t love Gat Out of Hell. I don’t hate it, by any means; but it seldom displays the spark of creativity that made the last two games so good. Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is a standalone expansion for Saints Row IV. Rather than “The Boss” – the moldable agent of chaos at the centre of all previous games – you play as returning characters Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington. Through a ridiculous set-up involving Kinzie’s birthday party and Aleister Crowley’s ouija board, The Boss is kidnapped by Satan and forced to marry his daughter, Jezebel.

Revenge of the Dead

Through an even more ridiculous series of events, the playable duo open their own portal to New Hades with a half-formed plan to rescue him. Needless to say, this is all great. Unfortunately, it all takes place in a cutscene. Gat Out of Hell’s best moments are all in cutscenes, where the characters are free to break out of the rigidity of the game itself. Even worse, the game’s best joke – which I won’t spoil on the off-chance you haven’t seen it – was released in its entirety as a trailer. Were I feeling generous, I’d argue that borrowing the movie industry’s trick of spoiling a film’s funniest bits shows how far comedy games have come. Really, though, it ruins what could have been a wonderful surprise. The major problem with Gat Out of Hell is that the series’ other traditional methods of delivering jokes – its mission design and scripting – are almost entirely absent. Instead, its mission givers offer playlists of open world mini-game activities. Saints Row IV did this too, but only as a diversion between the main missions. Here, there are no missions. Your job is to complete activities until you’ve caused enough carnage to attract Satan’s wrath. Do so, and you’ll unlock the final boss fight. The entire process took me around five hours – albeit with plenty of other activities left on the map. With no missions, the entire game is reliant on its open world design. Where in Saints Row IV you could super-jump and glide, in Gat Out of Hell you can fly. It’s a brilliant system. You’ve a limited number of times you can flap your wings while in the air, each one giving a small boost of speed. Your job is to maintain momentum, and with practice you can reach some exhilarating speeds. It gives an entirely new sense of freedom, and makes collecting “Clusters” – collectible souls that upgrade your powers – a joy. Also of note is New Hades. Its biggest plus is that it’s not Steelport, virtual or otherwise. There are similarities, most likely due to sharing an engine with Saints Row IV, but even though it resembles a heavy-metal cover version of the city, it’s nonetheless a new place to explore. Great! Only, there isn’t much new to do in it. Aside from a few notable exceptions, much of the activities, weapons and super powers are lifted across from the previous game. Your enemies even drop health pick-ups, which makes less sense in hell than it does in Saints Row IV’s computer simulation. Some of the new weapons are fun. The exploding frog launcher was my constant companion throughout the game, and the armchair Gatling gun was funny enough in concept and execution to make it into rotation every now and then. Saints Row’s combat has never been its strong suit, though. It’s functional, but the system feels more suited to large-scale carnage and mayhem than it does to the moment-to-moment headshotting of demons.

Funny has its limits

Here, the smaller scale stuff seems more prevalent, and the grand set-pieces sorely lacking. There are only a handful of different activities, each repeated multiple times. Torment Fraud is essentially a reskin of Saints Row IV’s Insurance Fraud, in which you throw yourself in front of cars and fight against an irritatingly imprecise ragdoll system. Survival and Mayhem also make the transition, and are similarly identical to previous versions. Of the new events, Hellblazer and Salvation make use of Gat’s flight ability, and as such are the best of the bunch. There are caveats to my disappointment. First, this is an expansion, and so of course it’s going to be smaller in scope than a full Saints Row game. Second, it’s priced like an expansion. That absolves Gat Out of Hell of a lot of its sins, but nevertheless leaves it feeling restrained and underwhelming. But of course Master Clubfoot can’t be lured out that easily. First you must create enough chaos in Hell to face him. However, series connoisseurs will not have any orientation problems in this independently running expansion of Saints Row 4, because Beelzebub’s home is actually nothing more than the city of Steel port in hell design, known from the main games. The open world, which can be freely explored from the start, is of course not particularly lively due to its scenario, but it still makes a well-rounded impression and shines with nice ideas such as restless wandering souls or demons, which act as quasi law enforcement officers here. Technically, however, you shouldn’t expect anything outstanding. Gat out of Hell looks neat but is still on the same graphically dusty level as the main game. But the action runs absolutely smoothly and smoothly at all times. Considering the full-screen explosions and frenetic gun battles, that’s quite a feat. So back to the chaos. Of course you can shoot wildly and blow up demons, but you won’t get very far without help. So it’s a good thing that numerous supporters can also be found in the underworld. Your little helpers are either well-known personalities such as Shakespeare, who started a new career as a DJ in hell, or people from the Saints universe, who you yourself promoted one floor down in the main games. The latter are also not on the best terms with the devil, so they are happy to help you and also provide you with useful special abilities. So you get a few wings right at the beginning, with which you can glide quickly over the city. You should only keep an eye on your stamina display. If this is at zero, you will crash. You also get new attacks, such as a stomp attack or the ability to summon assistants. All attacks and abilities can also be upgraded with money, experience points or collectible orbs. But since the level of difficulty turned out to be rather lax, you only need the special attacks to a limited extent. We mostly leveled up our wings and stomper, and we’ve only bitten the dust once over the entire gameplay on normal difficulty.

Anyone who expects a firework of abstruse gags due to the wacky scenario will be a little disappointed. In the first hour of play we often had to laugh out loud because the first encounters with our assistants are really funny and the story is told like a silly fairy tale, but after that the jokes run out of breath. Unfortunately, the middle part of the campaign, which took us about three and a half hours to complete, seems a bit soulless. We’re used to a much greater density of gags from the main games. Only towards the end did we sit laughing in front of the monitor again .This lack of ideas is not only evident in the humor, but also affects the general gameplay. Typically for an open-world game, you can either follow the story or try numerous side quests that are known from the main games and have been adapted to the new setting. So far so good. It’s just stupid that the story tasks are nothing more than just those side missions. So you get orders from your friends that send you from one side quest to the next. You fly checkpoint races against the clock, eliminate waves of enemies in survival missions, throw yourself in front of hell vehicles with lost souls or fight your way through demon pits, at the end of which a particularly tough opponent awaits. It’s all fun, but if you’re looking for a change, you’re definitely in the wrong place here.
