This Viking saga builds on the history-themed RTS romps of the ’90s, but it’s not beholden to them. The basics are still familiar. You start with nothing but a ramshackle town hall and some villagers, eventually growing it into a large, defensible settlement that can handle raids from monsters and other Vikings. That’s done by finding resources and exploiting them using specialist workers and buildings. Building slots limit how much you can construct straight away. The map is made up out of discrete regions containing resources, treasure and enemies, but only space for a few buildings, and they’ve got to be colonised before they can be used. From weather to warfare, is introduced, the pace of expansion is a relief. It slows things down just enough so that you can take a moment to set priorities, whether that’s making pals with the kobolds who moved in down the road or sending a scout to go delving into ruins. But while the pace might be more considered, winter’s approach means there’s always some tension, and the multitude of enemies ensures there’s no absence of friction. Winter is a challenge that can be overcome by worker placement and preparation—the two most important things in Northgard. Workers can be switched on the fly, so if you’ve got a warband just sitting around, you can make all of them farmers, fishermen or hunters to help keep everyone fed. With the right buildings and happy, healthy workers, even the most brutal winters can be handled. If you’re more military-minded, you might not want to disband your army. By generating lore, a stand-in for science, technological advancements can be made, including warmer clothes for warriors. That’s a game-changer, arguably making winter one of the best times to go on the offensive, when enemy Vikings might not be as prepared. How you approach winter, and indeed most of Northgard’s systems, can also depend on the clan you’re playing as, along with what victory condition you’re gunning for. You can win your ‘Best Viking Award’ by conquest, but you can also win through trade, wisdom and fame, all of which come with different building and resource prerequisites.

Fame is Northgard’s most unusual resource. It’s a representation of a clan’s great deeds, like killing a wyvern or defeating another player, and unlocks massive bonuses. It drives exploration, as you seek out greater foes, but also weaves its way throughout the game, tying everything together. Fighting, feasting, building monuments—do interesting things and you’ll be rewarded. While each clan shares a lot of the same features, they’re still a distinct bunch. The Wolf Clan, for instance, are a lairy mob of fighters. Their warriors can gather food by killing hostile beasties, and they also generate happiness, ensuring the settlement remains productive and new villagers keep appearing. Ultimately this means they don’t need as many farmers, fishermen or hunters and can afford to invest in larger warbands. The campaign serves as a solid introduction to each of these clans and eventually leads to some creative, novel missions. They can be brief if you clock the optimal path, and 11 seems a little on the short side, but there’s very little repetition. Each new chapter pushes you into trying new things, introducing additional mechanics and shaking things up with one-off challenges. The story the campaign hangs on is less compelling. The clan leaders that serve as the campaign’s small cast are more reflections of their respective clans than characters, rattling off perfunctory lines of forgettable dialogue. At least they’re decent fighters because of their high health and damage. Northgard lives in the skirmish mode. The campaign mission design is good, but sometimes you just want to shake off the shackles and batter some Vikings in a sandbox. When all of the game’s concepts collide, instead of being separated by levels, it becomes a tricky, unpredictable RTS that pulls you in all these different directions. There are many strategy games for the Switch, so what makes this RTS stand out? Northgard’s story draws the player in with fantastic voice narratives. You are Rig, the only living survivor of your clan. Your father was murdered by a rival clan to prevent your coalition of clans from traveling and settling Northgard, a land of untold riches and danger. Rig sets out on a quest to get revenge for his father’s death and the slaughter of his fellow clans and clansmen. What mysteries await our young leader and his ragtag band of would-be conquerors? That is what you will have to find out.

The Vikings conquer Northgard

While the functionality and gameplay of this title doesn’t reinvent the wheel, there are some interesting features that made me arch my eyebrow. Like other RTS games, you have to build your village and expand your area of influence while keeping your clansman happy. Happy people = good productivity, (unhappy = not good). Instead of grid-based maps, Northgard separates the map into small areas to settle. Each area can have different resources, giving the player different choices of buildings to enhance the village. You have to plan ahead in this game which is made challenging by the fact that you can’t see the whole map. You need to teach villagers to be scouts. Scouts, in turn, explore and open up the map. With each area you settle, the cost to settle in other areas increases. A cool thing I thought was as you progress you gain access to different leaders that have different bonuses. Some give extra food to start, some are good at commerce and increased gold production. Northgard isn’t just building and conquering. As you progress, the game presents different challenges for you to overcome making things interesting and breaking up the humdrum of most other rinse and repeat RTS games. Come on, what self-respecting Viking doesn’t like mead! This game is just simply awesome with enough content, story, and challenges that I found very entertaining, building on some of the classic games like Warcraft and Starcraft. Ok so I’ve dragged on about story and features, but how does it look? The maps are easy on the eyes, having nice detail and color without going over the top. Character animations are well done and non-player characters interact with the environment adding a sense of realism. The soundtrack and cut scenes really add to the theme of the game with well-produced arrangements and artwork. Sadly I didn’t get to play around with the multiplayer feature too much. However, I did learn that I’m not good at this game! My first run against another player, I only lasted for 15 minutes. I did better with a few other opponents. Multiplayer can have up to six players going head to head, with different random maps. You can set handicaps like most RTS multiplayer games. There is a single-player feature that is like the multiplayer but against the CPU. The same handicaps, but with the ability to set the aggressiveness of the cpu gives you the ability to practice using different tactics and generals. My only gripe was I actually couldn’t figure out how to travel the map faster so I could see what was going on in different areas on large maps.

Clans, Relics and Ragnarok

That aside, I didn’t find it enough to take away from the overall experience of the game.Northgard is a fantastic, well put together title. I found it to be challenging enough to keep me at it, but not over the top and unbalanced. Vikings conquering, smashing, and crushing enemies is a lot of fun. Get this game if you’re an RTS fan, it’s a must-have seems too simple. It’s the first thing you think of once you take charge of that small Viking clan that you lead in this real -time strategy video game developed by Shiro Games ; and yet Northgard is much more than meets the eye. It is a friendly game, ideal for those who are taking their first steps in the strategy genre, but it is also a title that knows how to surprise the most veteran ; that knows how to have fun with its solid resource management and which is its great differentiating element: the cold winter. When it arrives in the course of the game, the weather conditions will make it difficult to obtain food, increase the consumption of wood to survive the low temperatures and even reduce the effectiveness of the troops in combat. It doesn’t seem like much and yet it is everything in this exciting Viking adventure. Neglect growing food or gathering firewood and you will suffer real havoc during the winter. Play your cards well, nothing in abundance, and you can take advantage of these moments of apparent tranquility to besiege your enemies in the -for them- worst imaginable scenario. So yes, Northgard is a simple game, but also a fun title that brings back the sensations of the strategy of the 90s.If Northgard does something well, it is that it navigates between very different waters and despite this, it emerges admirably. Whether you’re a newcomer to the genre, or you’ve been enjoying real-time strategy all your life, in this Shiro Games title you’ll find more than enough excuses to lose yourself for hours in its colorful mythological universe . And it is something worth mentioning because all those limitations that it imposes so that its action does not become too complex are also an interesting strategic resource that allows it to face its challenges with a certain freedom .With a few Vikings under your command you will have to expand your domains by conquering the lands around you; but you will have to do it carefully, measuring each step you take, because at first growing too fast can end up in a jiffy with your food and wood reserves, leaving you totally defenseless against the cold winter.

At first you may go crazy building houses, or lumberjack cabins, or silos to store food, but with practice you will discover that sometimes it is more advisable to control that expense, save construction spaces, and improve the available buildings to house more workers and also increase their productivity. It is another detail that I love, the work management, because in Northgard you must constantly redirect the efforts of your Vikings to adapt to the conditions of war. If fighting is your thing, you can form an army and have it always active, ready to protect the borders of your territory, but that means that these Vikings will not be generating food, money or wood, so you might be interested in transforming them into explorers, or hunters, or farmers, and for a few months dedicate them to obtaining resources. Do you need to go to war? It’s as easy as removing troops from one building and directing them to another. So easy, so fast; and although at first glance it seems that the options are not many, they are enough to enjoy a varied and exciting gaming experience, with the ability to surprise even the most seasoned in the genre. It never quite digs to the point of becoming overly complex, but at least Shiro Games’ game doesn’t leave out any of the traditional real-time strategy elements, and this includes trading , which is great for making money.
