But even among those, Ghostrunner stands out by being 100% committed to delivering that fantasy of becoming a super fast and deadly assassin. This is a game where you run fast, slide fast, kill fast, and if you can’t do those things fast enough, you die fast. It can be very demanding and requires pinpoint platforming precision and split second decision making, but it’s rarely ever frustrating thanks to instant respawns, mostly generous checkpointing, and most importantly, open ended combat encounters that offer multiple methods of approach. Guided by the disembodied voice of an old man known as The Architect, the Ghostrunner gets wrapped up in an ongoing power struggle between the supposed rulers of this broken world, the efforts of a dying resistance, and the mystery of who he is. It’s a predictable tale, but the story is nonetheless well told and respectably voice acted. What’s especially great though is how the storytelling almost never slows down the fast pace of this six to eight hour campaign. There’s a lot of well acted dialogue in Ghostrunner, but it all plays out via conversations that happen in the head of the main character. That gives you the choice to either stop and listen intently to what’s being said, or to just push on through the various parkour heavy platforming challenges that typically accompany any long exposition dumps. You are Ghostrunner, a purpose-built killing machine and the last line of defence against a bloodthirsty tyrant. You and 100 of your kind are exterminated in the opening chapters of the game, but somehow you survived. Starting off at the bottom of a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk city overrun with electronically enhanced goons and robots, it’s your job to climb you up out of the depths and ascend to confront the evil dictator. Ghostrunner is really something special. The way in which it presents its combat system is incredibly freeing. Every encounter hinges on the fact that a single hit leads to death, demanding total accuracy at all times. Fortunately, movement and combat are both incredibly fluid. As the Ghostrunner, you can deliver devastating blows with your samurai sword, dodge around enemies while in bullet time, and even deflect bullets and projectiles back at them.

Slice/Dice

That’s without taking into account the Mirror’s Edge style first person movement which enables you to run along walls, wall jump and eventually use electronic rope to attach to anchor points around the world. The movement system is incredibly smooth, both in combat and during the challenging platform sections scattered across the city. Without any memory and severely damaged, an AI called The Architect awakens us and asks us to kill Mara, who is the current ruler of Dharma Tower. Also known as The Keymaster, Mara had previously betrayed The Architect and killed all other Ghostrunners. We are also introduced to a rebel group that initially repaired us to stand against The Keymaster and hopes we are the key to retaking control of Dharma City. It’s a competent enough story with some good voice acting if you pay attention. Sadly, the tale is almost exclusively told through voiced dialogue during missions, so it’s difficult to follow along while you’re jumping and slicing through enemies at breakneck speeds. You could find a good spot to stand still and listen, but since stages are timed, that is at odds with the game experience. Since the story is an excuse to stylishly slice enemies in half, you won’t likely miss much if you ignore it, but it is a decent enough tale that merits some attention. Poppy Playtime

Where the game shines is in its actual gameplay. Ghostrunner consists of 17 stages that took us about seven hours to complete. If you’re skilled and familiar with the game, you may be able to finish it in about four hours. While that may be a deterrent for some, the content is enjoyable and keeps players engaged and on their toes for the entirety of the experience due to a variety of stages, enemy types, and platforming options. Of course, the action is what you’re really here for – and if you’ve got a thing for lightning quick, reflex intensive, high risk/high reward combat that gets decided with just a single strike, then Ghostrunner was made just for you. The only main weapon in Ghostrunner is a sword, though your speed and mobility options are weapons unto themselves. The Ghostrunner can run along walls, slide down slopes with great speed, and also utilize a quick dash that can be held down to slow down time and alter the direction of his momentum in mid-air. Chaining all of these abilities together created a wonderful flow of movement that allowed me to nearly effortlessly close the distance between me and the more basic enemies before satisfyingly slicing them in half. Ghostrunner is a first-person action-platformer with a pretty challenging approach: one hit and you’re dead.

We have unlimited lives and abundant control points, but that does not mean that it is necessary to act with head and skill, trying to create a strategy and then execute it correctly. It’s a bit of a Hotline Miami in that sense; you know that with a single hit you die, so you have to react quickly and accurately.As we say, the platform has a very important role. The base is parkour , running along the walls and sliding to avoid obstacles, with additional elements that we will unlock, such as a hook or some rails that we slide along . There are sequences in which we are going to die many times without facing a single enemy, simply trying to find the way to our destiny. Special mention for the bosses, few but incredibly intense. It’s a shame that they won’t let us show you the second half of the game (which includes the bosses) on video, because we think it’s much more spectacular than the first. Your goal is simple: climb to the top of Dharma Tower, the last refuge of humanity after the end of the world, and dispose of Mara, the tyrant who has usurped rule of the city. But nothing stays simple, and before long, the Ghostrunner finds himself in the middle of a much larger conflict – one he’ll have to navigate while figuring out who he is. Ghostrunner’s story isn’t anything new, but it is surprisingly well told and acted. Better still, the game doesn’t force you to engage with it if you don’t want to. Almost everything plays out through radio communications between the Ghostrunner and the rest of the cast. How much attention to want to pay to what’s going on it up to you, but I found it a pretty engaging tale to listen to while I worked my way through Ghostrunner’s levels.

Pristine Platforming

The action, of course, is why you’re here. Ghostrunner’s gimmick is simple: everything, including you, dies in one hit. The result is an absurdly fast-paced game where the difference between life and death is an eyelash and you’ve got to be quick to stay alive. If you stop moving in Ghostrunner, you’re probably dead. Thankfully, another try is just a button press away. A Ghostrunner’s only weapon is their sword, but it doesn’t matter much when you’re this fast and maneuverable. Your Ghostrunner can do it all: run along walls, slide down ramps and under obstacles, deflect bullets with a well-timed sword swing, and use a quick dash to close distances or, if held in the air, slow time and change direction, allowing you to dodge bullets or avoid otherwise impassible obstacles. Ghostrunner’s movement feels incredible, and it’s easy to chain your tricks together to close the distance with an enemy before introducing him to the business end of your katana.Those basic enemies aren’t your only foes for long though, and one of the best things about Ghostrunner is how your adversaries always rise to meet your growing skills and abilities. Just when I got comfortable dodging and deflecting the bullets of the single-shot pistol wielding enemies, I had to deal with machine gun wielding soldiers that forced me to keep moving if I wanted to survive long enough to be able to hit them while they were reloading. After I got used to dealing with those, then I had to learn how to deal with shielded enemies that could only be hit from behind. STAR WARS Republic Commando

As you grow more confident with the game, I found myself relying less on bullet time and instead using acrobatic abilities to their full effect. In one instance, I took down a group of enemies while wall-running and deflecting their bullets back at them. There are also occasional puzzle sections which relate to upgrades and pickups. These puzzle sections typically teach you how to use a new ability or progress the narrative, but they never take you away from the action for too long. Fortunately, the puzzles are never too difficult and usually just take a little tinkering before you solve them. Upgrades unlocked later in the game make your Ghostrunner even more formidable, improving on your arsenal and adding to it. At one point you unlock a force push ability which can deflect projectiles back at enemies, making you feel like Neo from the Matrix. Those aforementioned platforming sections really are very fun. The freedom of movement mixed with the elevated sections of wall runs and grapple points almost feel like they should be in a cutscene, but they aren’t. There are occasional issues with physics where Ghostrunner would suddenly jolt from a wall through no fault of my own.

Fortunately, this rarely happened and never frequently enough to cause frustration. For those looking for an extra challenge while traversing the city, there are numerous secrets to be found in hard to reach places rewarding players with collectibles, additional lore and skins for Ghostrunner’s sword.There is a good progression in terms of situations, both with the level design and with the enemies, which get progressively more complicated, while we gain the necessary skills to face them. We have several totally new abilities that we will acquire, as well as the possibility of improving the basic ones, such as the slowdown of time that allows us to dodge or modify our trajectory . These improvements are combined like Tetris , and we have to try to fit as many as we can or more that suit us within the available slots.
