For a game that is solely about launching fireworks and only having two locations, it’s just so incredibly moreish that it’s not a novelty like the Cobbler 905 or Thic Billy. That same energy and enthusiasm from playing the demo were reignited that I had to go and buy it. Having given it some time, no, it’s not a gimmick, and there have been numerous additions along the way. You could wonder whether we’re getting ahead of ourselves in terms of gameplay, but everything here is face value. Your grandfather hasn’t left you their fishing boat or their ranch. Likewise, you don’t need to micro-manage staff to develop your own brand of firecrackers. All you need to do is whip out your infinite supply of explosives, line them up, then start creating art in the skies (or peoples homes). The selection is vast, and each item has a unique characteristic that differentiates it from the others, and best of all, you can mix and match them. Choose from rockets, cakes, firecrackers, novelties and props; there’s plenty to experiment with and reconstruct the big bang. A favourite of mine was lining up propane tanks and chucking in about 20 odd cakes to cause havoc, with some visceral screen shake like you were in World War III. The fireworks in Fireworks Mania can be placed randomly, or you can set up timed displays by linking each one with a burning fuse.

Breezy Set-up of Displays

Physics naturally apply here as randomly placing a firework, or dropping it, will cause it to collapse on the floor. Alternatively, you can place them upright, undeterred by gravity, or rotate them to aim them. This plays out as a nice little trick as I would often aim the rockets so they would fly through a barn or clip an object to score points in a game made up on the spot. The visuals are lo-fi similar to something like Kill It With Fire, and quite frankly gorgeous. There’s no surplus music or unwanted dialogue, just pure unadulterated mayhem. But the stars of the show are the fireworks, and you genuinely revel as you decorate the stars. Despite the low-key, yet gorgeous visuals, you’d expect Fireworks Mania slowing down or crashing. This adds to the effect, though. Without limitation, you’re bound to overdo it with the most explosive items you can find, place them in the petrol station with propane gas, then BOOM! blue screen of death. But no. The effects boast that screen shake with deep bassy sounds of Civil War cannons. Again, everyone will have their favourites, and as a family game, I did the rarity of connecting the PC to the TV, so we can all play. ELDEN RING

While mixing propane was my kink, my eldest daughter likes the addition of YouTuber pyrotechnics inspired by Pewds and Mr Beast. The youngest just wanted to place flamingos everywhere. In real life, we know fireworks are pretty dangerous in some instances and also quite annoying for your neighbors, but in the virtual world, you can set them off to your heart’s content and no one will call the cops on you. There really isn’t much to say about Fireworks Mania other than the game provides quite an overwhelming number of different kinds of fireworks to set odd. You have smoke bombs, bottle rockets, firecrackers, fountains, and tubes. You can set them up in any number of infinite ways and have them all connected to the same fuse. Watch them go off in sequence either from afar or right inside the action. Either way, you’ll be safe from the typical dangers associated with them.What’s neat is that there are different environments you can set them off in as well as either in the day or night. You can also save your creations for viewing again at a later time as Blueprints. There are even special fireworks for New Year 2022 right now in the game Sound-wise, the game is fairly quiet until the fireworks go off and you’ll probably want to wear headphones for it as half the fun of watching fireworks is hearing them as well. While Fireworks Mania is a great simulator, there is one negative and that’s mainly that there is no VR mode for this game. Meaning you can only play this on a monitor but this is the type of game that would be glorious in VR. Maybe in the future, they’ll consider adding this.Aside from that, Fireworks Mania is what it says it is. It’s a really good fireworks simulator and one that you and your family will enjoy. It’s super easy to set up your own fireworks show and is a great way to enjoy them year-round.Initially, you’ll choose from two venues: a suburban town and a rural settlement. The select isn’t just cosmetic. Each locale offers vandalistic opportunities. There’s a gas station with a 4X4 just waiting to go up in a screen-shaking, monitor-illuminating inferno. Or you can pile a heap of propane tanks around a grain silo. But the only voice inviting you to cause that much destruction is the lizard brain deep inside your skull.

Proficient Performance, until a Room of Explosives Ignites

Pleasingly, Fireworks Mania – An Explosive Simulator’s user interface favors quick set-ups of explosives overly precisely timed pyrotechnic spectacles. Bring up a menu by tapping the ‘Tab’ key, and you’ll be able to sort through categories of rockets, cakes, firecrackers, novelties, tubes, and props. Pleasingly, each category has between five and nineteen variations, extending everything from rockets that can coat the sky with color to strobe effects.Using the mouse and keyboard, Mania’s control scheme provides two placement types. A tap of the right mouse button freezes a firework in an upright position. If you want a succession of rockets to launch their payloads skyward, this can be accomplished in seconds. Create displays that fill the skies with a succession of rockets, and you’ll be able to crank the settings up to “Ultra”. Here, the burning skyrockets soar, leaving a realistic trail as they cut through the sky. When they explode, expect showers of particles, followed by wafts of lingering smoke. But when the delinquent tendencies take hold, you’ll probably want to dial down the settings. While the actual explosion is in real time, Fireworks Mania can bring systems to a halt just before detonation.
