(Don’t argue, I’m pretty sure that’s what you said.) Well, I’ve got a banger for you here, but we need to first make certain that you are among the select number of gamers that will appropriately appreciate Elex II for everything that it offers. Back in the day, when you heard that open world games like Two Worlds were “broken” and “unplayable”, did you take that as a personal challenge rather than a warning? Do you enjoy projects where scrappy development teams bite off far more than they can chew, and then somehow cobble together what can best be described as an “admirable effort”? Elex is a punk rock game, doing what it wants with all the grace of clanging guitars and pounding drums echoing out from your neighbor’s garage on a summer night. This is a game that has players jetpacking into battle against gigantic marsh ogres with a tiny hammer and a crossbow. So how about it? Are you the sort of person that needs all of the smooth edges sanded off of your studio-produced pop punk, or are you in the mood for something flavored with whiskey and pills? What I’m trying to say is that while I’m sure there will be many reviews less kind than my own, there is an audience for Elex II, and I count myself among their number. Yes, there are a lot of new epics vying for your attention right now, but real talk: I’ve spent more time in Elex II than in Dying Light 2 and Horizon Forbidden West combined. But I want to be very clear – prospective players need to go into Elex II with their eyes wide open, fully informed that what they will find is something of a glorious shitshow, the video game equivalent of a bloody nose ring and a sticky barroom floor. If Horizon Forbidden West is a beautifully staged ballet, Elex II is a mosh pit.

Experience a story where your actions have consequences, immersing you in a world of moral decisions

I first discovered the original Elex over this past holiday season when I was looking for an open world game to play. I found Elex on the PlayStation Store for five bucks, and snapped it up, merrily spending twenty hours or so exploring its harsh post-apocalyptic landscape before peeling off. I couldn’t believe that something this big somehow slipped past me; I had never even heard of the Elex franchise before this. But there is probably a reason that Elex has never reached critical mass with the gaming public. Developer Piranha Bytes defiantly follows its own template for games like this, and does not pause for one moment to give a crap about things like “modern design” or “fluid gameplay”. Piranha Bytes has always had its own structure for its games, and it sticks doggedly to it’s blueprint. This is a team that happily drops the player into a world where just about everything can one-hit kill them, shows a hiccupping cut scene for story purposes, and then waggles its fingers goodbye while whispering “You’ll figure it out.” It is then up to the player to sink or swim, penetrate Elex’s impenetrable shell, or die trying. Think Dark Souls level difficulty, without the fluidity of combat. Poppy Playtime 

So yeah, I was excited for Elex II, and having played the first game some, I was prepared to meet it on its own terms. Those coming in cold might be a little put off by what they find but sticking with Elex II will reveal a fantastically deep and detailed game world. Elex II might have a ton of jank in the tank, but it more than makes up for that with its stellar world building. Based on the ending to the first Elex, its sequel always had a clear objective: protecting the planet from an otherworldly threat. Elex 2 not only realizes that goal but pulls together a story with plenty of turns and twists, while also setting up for a proper threequel. Truly, at the end of the day, Elex 2 delivers on its marketing promises and is what a proper open-world RPG and sequel should be. That same creative malaise is found in the game’s script too, though in arguably far harsher quantities. The overarching narrative of one man’s quest to save humanity from both invading force and itself is a staple of the genre but Elex II adapts it with disconcerting loyalty. Every beat from the strained father-son relationship to the warring factions is rote and hostile to any real emotional investment. Academically I can understand why I’m supposed to play Jax as a man with ideals but in reality, every NPC is so profoundly unlikeable (the game’s “fuck” count must be in the hundreds) I almost always defaulted to brutish efficiency.

You will remember what you’ve done and react accordingly

Elex 2 will not be for everyone, however, and it’s highly recommended that the first game is played before it. Otherwise, there are a lot of nuances that players will not be able to pick up on. But, up-front, the biggest hurdle for some players will be that Elex 2 is clearly a Eurojank game. Eurojank is a subgenre defined as ambitious games that punch above their weight, typically missing a level of polish expected of AAA games. In Elex 2, players once again lace up the boots of Commander Jax. Although he was once a hero in the game’s setting, the planet Magalan (which was wrecked by a comet), his deeds have been forgotten to time. Thus, players must once again pull together all the factions of Magalan to face a new threat: the Skyands. In doing so, players will learn more about the history of the planet, the purpose of Elex, the arrival of the comet, and who the Skyands are. While it may seem simple on the surface, Elex 2 will make major reveals throughout the game—always tugging the player to return for the next mystery. Pokemon UNITE

In Elex 1, there are three factions players can join: Outlaws, who are the rough and tough bandit-like faction of Magalan; Clerics, who are highly religious and can effectively use technology; and Berserkers, who use mana and magic to try and restore the world. Elex 2 retains all of these factions, allowing players to side with them in the coming war, but expands on them in the best of ways. Not only has the elapsed time impacted their presence and power in Magalan, but players are given even more Elex 2 factions and choices beyond these. Players can also join the Albs, who were the primary antagonists of the first game, as they’ve grown and learned from Commander Jax. Players can join the Morkons, who worship the God of Oblivion and embrace death, allowing players to have an almost Barbarian or Death Knight-style build. And, should they so wish for the most punishing playthrough, they can refuse to join any faction.

You will join or leave your group depending on how you behave

Elex II is every bit the sequel to Elex, forgoing narrative onboarding in favour of jarring, confusing flashbacks peppered throughout the game. You’re back in the shoes of Jax, Elex’s hero who time has turned into a societal outcast accused of doom’s day fear-mongering and just generally being an arsehole. After saving humanity, Jax and Caja found some semblance of peace long enough to have a child, Dax, but in the ensuing years, their inability to be different people pushed them apart. Jax’s strained relationship with his son, and former life, are a cornerstone of Elex II’s narrative and define much of how your interactions in the world of Magalan begin.

The land itself is in something of an in-between phase, both rebuilding from the wounds of the last war but currently being torn asunder once more by an invading alien force. Elex II’s approach to world-building is buffet style, greedily filling its plate with individual delicious things only to be left with a sloppy mound of flavours and textures when you finally sit down to eat. The base foundation of the world is clearly Earth-adjacent with modern-day cars, technology and ruins littering a verdant green and earthy landscape. But slightly to the left will be a colony of fae-mood boarding magic wielders who reject technology. Over that hill is the old church which has been infused with robotic sentinels and neon light walkways by the Clerics who worship a digital god. And those guys over there in the Halo-lite base? There are times when these contrasting elements work to uphold the game’s narrative threads but a lacklustre art direction holds back an otherwise neat concept. The tension between the old and new worlds, both romanticised, is an inherently interesting one and in a game as fixated on violence as Elex II there are myriad ways the competing world structures and technology could have been compelling. What if the game’s version of raiders were the one to be inspired by woodsy folklore aesthetics instead of rote Mad Max leather and grunge? Or the Clerics had succumbed to brute-forcing their ideology on the world and adopted a harder-edged culture because of it? There are so many ways in which the pieces on Elex II’s board could have been played in fun ways but it is content with dolling out the same game we’ve seen dozens of times. Only with more screen-tearing.
