For the last quarter-century historical strategy games have been encouraging us to ask the same questions. They’re great questions –the foundations of many fine games – but after a week or two in the company of Paradox’s latest past prober, they do seem a trifle trite. During my last Crusader Kings 2 session, the dilemmas I faced included… Should I blackmail an enemy noble I know to be gay? Should I reprimand my daughter for torturing rats? Should I entrust my son’s education to a lovely schizophrenic Ethiopian lady? Should I lock-up my mum for plotting to kill my half-brother? None of these situations were scripted. They all sprung spontaneously from an astoundingly rich and yeasty depiction of medieval Europe. Utilising the turn-spurning Clausewitz engine last seen in Sengoku, CK2 dares to model the feudal system in all its backstabbing, nepotistic glory. The realm labels that festoon the map hide power hierarchies populated by hundreds of historically based and randomly generated characters. Every one of these characters is out to realise their own ambitions and further their own family interests. To join the soap opera you simply pick a Christian bigwig (playable pagans should arrive via an expansion pack) and a starting date anywhere between 1066 and 1337. Which throne you occupy and where and when you start, makes a world of difference. A Byzantine emperor in 1070 can expect to find his dreams haunted by vassal politics and Holy Wars. A lowly English Earl in 1180, is likely to have social climbing, maybe even regicide, high on his ‘To Do’ list. The most prestigious roles are probably best avoided at the start. Though the tooltips are plentiful and the tutorials do a decent enough job of broaching the basics, this is one of those games that only really clicks on your third or fourth playthrough. Until you get your head around unconventional subtleties such as plotting, matchmaking and title distribution, CK2 is merely an irresistible oddity. It takes a few evenings of experimentation, plus the odd factfinding forum trip, to nudge it firmly into ‘This is the best strategy game I’ve played in yonks’ territory. Just as Richard I didn’t glance at a globe every morning and think “I only need to capture another four French counties to win!” CK2 never cramps your creativity with crude victory conditions. Because games span centuries, and final scores are the sum of the prestige totals of successive rulers, you’re too busy ensuring your realm doesn’t disintegrate on your death, or your reputation in a rash war, to worry about ludological laurel wreaths. A shame those wars don’t have anywhere near the subtlety of the social shenanigans. Though there are more troop types than in Sengoku, battles still tend to boil down to ‘biggest army triumphs’. Hardened wargamers will snort on realising that hired mercenraies appear instantly, and opposing forces can’t occupy the same province – however large – without coming to blows.

Getting medieval, after the jump

Military-minded modders may well address issues like these as well as other minor flaws, like the willingness and ability of Saracen Jihadists to strike at the western extremities of Christendom. Even if they don’t, I can see myself enjoying the company of CK2 and its incomparable cast of bed-hopping, sibling-slaughtering, rodentmutiliating characters, for months – maybe years – to come A game of Crusade Kings II takes place on an overhead map of Europe, but the borders of the countries — and counties, baronies, duchies, etc. — are secondary to the main thrust of the game. Essentially, you control a “dynasty,” that is, a single family line through a five-hundred-year-ish period of European history. Your goal is to increase your family’s honor, prestige, standing, land holdings, and power through multiple generations of sons, nephews, daughters, and intermarriage. But Crusader Kings II is no simple pass-the-torch exercise, it’s far too deep and challenging an experience for that. Even if you build up your wealth under one family member, that person is sure to die sooner or later, leaving a bevy of decisions in terms of inheritance, divvying up of hereditary lands, pretenders to the throne, and just about every Byzantine (forgive the pun) machination you can think of. Fortunately, your decisions when running your family line aren’t solely your own. Diplomacy and military conflict are options for exercising your will outside your demesne, but within it, you’ll need your advisors to help you choose how to build up your economy (by choosing various improvements to build in your provinces), deal with the pettier nobility, marry off you and your children, and to protect you from being assassinated. That probably sounds overwhelming – and at first it is. But you can take comfort that Crusader Kings II comes with a pretty comprehensive tutorial, and absolutely enormous help resource: just about every button and statistic in the game has a rollover tooltip that will explain what it does and what changes will occur if you select it. You can also take comfort in the fact that the more you play the game, the more entertainment you’ll derive from it, and the more you’ll want to play. Sure, some aspects of the game are abstract in the extreme, for example, the effect that certain personal characteristics like wrathful vs. patient personalities will have in “real world,” practical terms can be hard to discern. But for the most part, if it’s going to make a difference, you’ll come to understand what that difference is and whether or not you want it to be made, and you’ll soon find yourself parsing data like the characters in the Matrix: it’s gobbledygook to outsiders, but to a seasoned pro like you, it’s a beautiful masterpiece.

Keep in mind that

While Crusader Kings II is technically a real-time strategy game, there’s very little in the way of hands-dirty micromanagement or rapid clicking going on. Mostly you click a button that moves your dynasty toward or away from a certain set of policies, or you initiate a process that third-parties will handle the dirty work of, and then you sit back and deal with events as they unfold. The game presents you with alert messages for important events – that you handle according to your whims – but, for the most part, things are controlled only at a very high level. But don’t think you’ll get bored just handling high-level stuff: this really is like being the king of your own castle, you’ll soon be accosted by so many simultaneous events that you’ll find hours going by like minutes as you make your choices. While events unfold in Europe that sometimes accord with real history and sometimes don’t, it does help to have a basic grasp of who’s who in Europe at this time (which the game will teach you) and some overall sense of what you want to accomplish in a given playthrough. Because things are so high level, victory conditions are much more subjective in Crusader Kings II than in your average strategy title. Does winning for you mean taking over the whole of the British Isles? Or maintaining a continuous line of male heirs for five centuries? It’s this wonderful sort of freedom to play how you wish, grounded in the concerns of the real world, that make Crusader Kings II so enjoyable. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings

The game takes place between 1066 and 1453, and there are literally hundreds of characters throughout that span that you can play as. Being a king is very different than playing a count, but neither’s journey is less interesting. The stories spring up effortlessly. We first noticed when playing as Kaiser Heinrich IV of the Holy Roman Empire, around 1070. We royally pissed off, as kings by definition do, Duke Lothar-Udo II of Brandenburg, who was next in line to the throne. Not only did we fire him as chancellor when someone better came along, we also installed our newborn son as our preferred heir under the empire’s agnatic-elective succession laws. He quickly gained the majority of the vassals’ votes, putting the Duke out of his future dream job. This was around the time that our spymaster starting reporting that the Duke was plotting to murder young Heinrich Jr. Confronted with the evidence, the Duke politely backed down, apologizing for any trouble caused. Sure, no problem. A few months later our spymaster burst in: Lothar-Udo, murder plot, Heinrich Jr. Again: so sorry, my bad. This cycle occurred three times before Heinrich Jr. turned six, at which point we sent him off to be educated by the Duke. This not only struck us as hilarious, but the good feelings engendered by this seemingly reckless act of poor parenting finally stopped the Duke from wanting to murder his new pupil. Or at least he stopped acting on those feelings, and our heir got a good education in diplomacy: win-win. These stories play out constantly, whether you play a provincial count or a godlike emperor.

 I’ll do it again

While your goal is ostensibly to sustain your dynasty as long as possible, Crusader Kings II is more about the journey than the goal. Getting there is more than half the fun. This heady, complicated mix has a substantial learning curve, so it’s not exactly the type of game to pick-up-and-play. The vocabulary alone will give most non-medieval studies scholars pause. Among the terms we had to grok: demesne, de jure, agnatic-cognatic, gavelkind, primogeniture…the list goes on. And do you really know exactly what a prince-bishop is, or how a duchy differs from a county? You will after playing CK2 for a day or two, but it’s pretty scary at first. It was definitely touch and go for our first few sessions. CK2 is unabashedly complex, and the tutorials explain perhaps a third of the stuff you’ll really want to know. After a week of play we still have burning questions about major game systems that just aren’t covered in the tooltips or manual, so we’ve been spending some serious time on the official Paradox forums. Help is abundant there, but we’ve still got a ways to go before we’ll be weaving intricate webs of deception that’d make Machiavelli proud. But the potential is totally there, so long as you can stick with it and conquer the sometimes-overwhelming interface. There are little buttons everywhere, and while the interface is pretty useable once you get used to it, it’s never as easy to find specific characters or visualize their relationships as it probably should be. This in particular makes the game feel impenetrable at first. The text and icons are pretty small, too. The game runs happily at 1080p but we actually reduced it to 1366×768 just so we could read the text and see the icons without squinting. Another place the game disappoints slightly is in its Eurocentrism. While this is understandable given its already-immense scope (seriously, why have we never noticed that Europe’s so vast?), it’s still unfortunate that you can’t play as Muslims, pagans, or really much of anyone who doesn’t worship the Christian god. Modders were all over this for 2004’s original Crusader Kings, so we’re sure DLC or mods will address it soon enough. Crusader Kings II can be a heck of a lot of fun. For us it was a slow burn; the more we understood, the more fun we had. Once you start getting past the learning curve you’ll find yourself more and more absorbed by all the complex little dramas that swirl around your nobles; you’ll know you’re getting there once you start feeling the urge to fill in other people on your crazy, possibly immoral medieval exploits. Just to give another example, I very much appreciated the willingness of the developers to abandon the classic pre-set development of technological progress, where we often find ourselves choosing a precise evolutionary step at the cost of a few shifts, in favor of a system focused on issues a broader, much more realistic although more difficult to dominate.

As you can see, there are many elements and the subtle balance between land management and court intrigues will allow you to adopt a considerable number of strategies, so much so that you will find yourself playing one game after another for the sole purpose of being able to thoroughly try each variant; shame about some hardly understandable limitations such as the inability to play as a non-Christian nation, but I’m sure that even these little ones will be fixed with some upcoming DLCs. Where the numerous elements present thus combine to create a scenario of varying complexity but ever increasing with the passing of the hours, the interface and the internal help system combine to make everything easily controllable. Your every step or move will in fact be supported, if you wish, by continuous suggestions or indications on what are the factors at stake, although it is not always possible to have quick access to comparison tables or comprehensive statistics; on the other hand, given the amount of elements present, it is practically impossible to find a solution that can satisfy everyone and at the same time is easy to use. The graphics leave the time they find, not so much because it would have made little sense to propose millions of polygons, shaders or 3D-like, but because it is not this element that can shift the balance between a possible purchase and total forgetfulness when talking of a turn-based strategy.
