Which is why Zen Bound 2 is actually a wonderful game to pick up for Nintendo Switch. In Zen Bound 2, all you need to do is wrap string or rope around wooden structures in a neat or specific way, covering a certain amount of the object or touching certain nails that are protruding from it. The game starts with a basic paint mode, where the object you contort will be painted by the rope covering it. Painting a certain percentage of the object will allow you to continue, but of course you have limited rope, and getting a higher percentage will give you a better score. You basically have to angle your rope by twisting the JoyCon in your hand, and there’s a decent amount of challenge involved, especially when you’re trying to wrap the rope in a specific fashion in order to maximise your progress. It reminded me of the chest unwrapping minigame in 1-2-Switch, but much more intricate, requiring a delicate touch instead of pushing you to rush to victory. Often the shape of objects will prevent you from simply wrapping the rope around and being done with it, even though that’s certainly how things start out. Soon notches jutting out of the objects and crevasses hiding a nail that you need to get to will dictate the angle you must approach them from. And that’s before you take into consideration where you started. If you want to go for 100% on each level, you’ll be here for a while finding the optimum routes through, but it’s not necessary. If you want, you can finish levels with about 70% completion, allowing you to speed through the game, but giving a compelling reason to return later. It’s all very reminiscent of the Wii and Wii U title Art of Balance, where you use the Wii remote to delicately stack blocks in a small zen garden. The Japanese theme is here, from the music to the art work, as well as the delicate but considered approach to motion controls. But ultimately, the similarities only do it a service. You can use the sticks on the controllers to contort objects, but honestly, it loses a lot of novelty – though, it’s a good deal more accurate, once you’ve adjusted. The goal of the game is to paint wooden sculptures by wrapping them in rope – a task that may sound simple but has surprising complexity. Each of the levels presents a spatial puzzle that becomes obvious through inspection. Some levels feature paint bombs that are helpful in covering complex areas of the object. Zen Bound 2 is a calm and meditative gameplay experience, with tactile, dusty visuals and a sublime, enveloping soundtrack by the sensational electronic artist ‘Ghost Monkey’. There are 76 objects to wrap in total that are separated into three groups: the Tree of Reflection, the Tree of Challenge, and the Tree of Nostalgia. Each tree is decorated with tags representing the statues, which are either carved in the form of animals or abstract shapes. After wrapping an object, you are graded on how much of its surface area you managed to cover. Seventy percent coverage earns you one flower, 85 percent gets you two, and 99 percent is good for all three. Your progress up the tree is regulated by how many flowers you cause to bloom. You will often have to revisit previously completed levels and perfect them to move up to the next batch of tags. Zen Bound has many impressive attributes, but its touch controls stand out on top of everything else. They are flawless. Pinching the screen lets you rotate an object around any axis you choose, while swiping rolls it up in string. It requires no real thought or effort at all to position the object however you like. The game feeds you as much string as you need to do the job, and it keeps the string nice and taut, so you can easily control its path to see what you’re doing. The string also behaves exactly the way you’d expect it to behave. You can wrap it around a corner, and friction will keep it in place while you reorient the object and start turning it in a different direction. Zen Bound is built around a universally accessible activity–who hasn’t rotated and wrapped objects before? As a result, the game feels like a primal experience, and with no time limit, you can choose your own pace. After a while, you will naturally settle into the subtle rhythms of the game’s ambient soundtrack, which meld with the striking textures on the carvings and the shimmering backgrounds in a way that seems intentionally pacifying. The “Zen” in Zen Bound is apt. This is a game that will generate contemplative, relaxed feelings if you let yourself sink into the experience. And yet, Zen Bound is not necessarily an easy game. It’s a game that’s certainly very easy to play, but it’s still challenging enough to hold your attention for very long periods of time (until your battery runs out). Hitting that 99 percent on certain shapes can be a real bear. You could say that Zen Bound joins such console and handheld games as Flower and PixelJunk Eden as a prime exponent of a rapidly growing movement toward universality in game design. That is, like those games, Zen Bound is neither restrictive nor unappealing because it has a steep learning curve or lots of violent content, but rather, because it focuses on gameplay and activities that can be quickly grasped and appreciated by just about anyone, regardless of age, background, or skill level.

In any case, Zen Bound is something special, indeed. Growing up, I had this cat. She loved going outside, but was too wild to stay in the yard and out of traffic, so whenever she wanted to go out, we would hook her into a harness and let her roam the yard in that. My cat hated the harness, and as soon as it came out, she would turn into a puddle of fur, meat and disconnected bones that made threading her into the harness both an act of frustration and love. Zen Bound 2 is a lot like that cat. The object of the game is to wrap up an item with string, which places paint on the object. The objective is to completely cover each wooden effigy with paint. The main object in your arsenal is just to turn and rotate the item to slowly wrap it up, but the game includes nail bombs and paint bombs that also splash paint across the item. It’s a simple enough premise in theory, and certainly something I had never come across before. Perhaps it simply takes a certain type of person to appreciate this kind of game, but I found the puzzles in Zen Bound 2 frustrating me more than relaxing me, and the ambient sounds of rope pulling taut just made me go tense alongside it. I’ve seen other reviewers say it was soothing, though, so it all depends. The controls seemed tense and unforgiving to me, like I had little control over where the rope would fall, and what it stuck on or slid off of seems inconsistent. The aesthetic appeal of this game, with its clean and warm graphics, is undeniable, and even clever. I’ve only seen some of them so far, and look forward to unlocking the rest. The music is similarly Zen, very appropriate to the game. I did encounter some freezing, stuttering, and long lag times, with items getting ‘stuck’ mid-turn and glitching out, along with the music and sound effects. The fact that the game did not give me the experience I had expected doesn’t mean I did not enjoy it, though, and find my own reasons to enjoy it. The game is challenging and maybe even punishing, as Perfection always is. There’s more to this game than its claws. Zenbound 2 is a puzzle game which provides you with a rope and an object, and you are asked to wrap the rope around the object. Wherever the rope touches, a ‘halo’ of paint is applied, and the main goal is to cover as much of the object in paint as possible. Pins or nails are sometimes placed at strategic locations which can make the task easier or harder, based on your point of view. Though at times, it can be frustrating to get the rope to stick or slide where and when you want it to, this is an engaging and brain-bending puzzle game. There are numerous solutions to each puzzle because of the nature of the paint mechanic, but as the difficulty increases, the objects get more complex, and the rope gets shorter, you have to carefully plan your paths to make sure that full contact is made at the right depth levels before you move to other areas. 100% completion is impossible, so if you strive for that satisfaction, don’t search for it here.

Casual puzzle gamers and people looking to burn 15-20 minutes at a time will love this. Simplicity and Serenity are what excel in this game – great no stress time waster! Who would have thought winding a rope around a sculpture could be so addictive and challenging. Graphically very nice, music very soothing and plenty of levels to master. Going to take me a while to get 100% on all these puzzles. Mouse controls of rotating the sculpture are precise, and easy to navigate which is very important since this is the core of the experience. Like a good puzzler but with a unique goal With its simplistic design and elegant Asiatic music you would think this is a soothing game. To me it is an intense mindbending challenge! The object of the game is to get 100% coverage of a carved wooden shapes by wrapping it in as little of your length of rope as possible. The rope is tied to one nail and you must tie it off (touch) to the finishing nail after getting at least the minimum amount of coverage. The shapes and difficulty increase as you go. It is really a wonder to me the amount of control you have moving the shape around as you work to wrap the rope around it. It is extremely fluid. If you are in the mood for something different, requiring mindfulness, and challenging then this is for you.

Zen Bound 2 is one of my favorite puzzle games. I keep coming back to it because it avoids the common frustrating elements that some puzzle games use as a challenge or rating system (time limits, move limits, complex trial-and-error combination “puzzles” etc). The game lets you play at your own pace, if you just want to breeze past the levels you can do just that, and then come back later if you want to complete the achievements, it’s fun and surprisingly entertaining either way. I would say that becoming a grandmaster in this would probably not really translate much to anything else, unless you do in fact start wrapping people up or you are actually Spider-Man. different in how it inspires your gaming vibes. After the initial confusion (there’s no tutorial, so on the first level I wasn’t even sure what I was supposed to do), it kinda grows on you. Kudos to the low-poly models with nice specular lights and realistic shaders. It reminds me of the work I used to do 15 years ago with limited GPU power (this was before the DirectX 9 days). Moreover, the concept of treading the rope all across a dummy wooden figurine is not really a puzzle. Ropes are needed to be entwined to a nail in the end. What sort of concept this is ? It isn’t exciting at all and extremely slow. Better learn to interwove the thread in a needle but this is way off the grounds from anything challenging and intriguing. The goal is to cover the object with as much paint as possible before tying the rope around the finishing nail.
