The action RPG gameplay is respectable and even ahead of the class in some areas. The dark fantasy story isn’t especially groundbreaking, though it is told with plenty of endearing flair and enthusiasm. But all of that doesn’t count for too much when you’re as likely to lose a boss fight because of bugs as you are to being smashed by a hellbeast as intended. The two-chambered heart of a hack-and-slash adventure like Wolcen is made up of combat and character customization. And in both of these areas, Wolcen does a great job when technical issues aren’t causing it to have palpitations. It differs from its genre-mates in some subtle but positive ways, like the fact that you can’t buffer special attacks. That means that if you’re holding down the left mouse button for a basic swing, you can’t cue up a special move as part of a combo unless you let go of that button first and wait for the animation to finish. But Wolcen uses it to tell a tale with impactful character drama, which is certainly more than you can say for Diablo 3’s campaign, and some of the architecture and armor designs show a genuine effort to establish a unique visual identity within the narrow boundaries of its chosen subgenre. The piles and piles of mostly unmemorable, randomized gear you’ll pick up in the course of the roughly 30-hour campaign are handily organized into class archetypes, like bruiser and sorcerer, that let you decide how much you want to focus on pure damage resistance, health points, a quickly-regenerating force shield, or some combination of the above. There’s nothing to stop, say, a tanky knight build from using sorcerer gear, and while certain skill trees will favor one type of defense over others, there are many that don’t. Aside from fresh loot, your Wolcen hero is shaped by active skills, which can level up and unlock new upgrades the more you use them, and the rotating Gate of Fate passive skill tree. The possibilities are practically endless here, and there are some really cool special nodes to unlock further down the tree. As a frothing Child of Fury, I could unlock a new character resource that increased my offense but lowered my defense the longer I stayed in combat. A high-level Time Weaver can do some really wild and awesome stuff, like delaying part of the damage from an incoming attack to land a few seconds later. Since each ring can be rotated independently, putting together unique and out-there multiclass builds is not only viable, but encouraged. And compared to a game like Path of Exile, Wolcen never made me feel like I was screwing myself over for taking abilities that sounded cool instead of following a build guide.

Performance was also a bit of an issue, especially with lots of enemies on screen at a time. Which happens, you know, a lot in these types of demonic invasions. Even my GeForce GTX 1070 and core-i7-powered rig struggled to maintain a stable frame rate on high settings. It’s very difficult to recommend a game with such severe bugs that I couldn’t even finish it. But for the 30ish hours I played, I was usually enjoying myself a fair bit. The meaningful tweaks to combat, novel skill tree, and the fact that the story was never treated as an afterthought left an impression on me. All things considered, a hearty helping of technical polish is really the only thing stopping Wolcen from competing with the best action RPGs available today. You play as one of three siblings born and bred for battle, but cast out from the only family you know when an unknown power awakens within you. It’s a plot filled to the brim with exposition, riddled with vaguely explained fantasy jargon and worldbuilding that never clicks into place. It’s easy to forget about entirely after the first few hours, with only the stilted dialogue and awkward cutscenes reminding you of the uninteresting events dressing Wolcen’s main draw. The setting, however, doesn’t fall prey to the same oppressive medieval look. Gloomy caverns and bright, colorful forests are equally impressive backdrops for the equally outstanding visual details buried within them. The variation across Wolcen’s three acts is impressive too, as it whisks you between the opulent, gold-laden halls of an ancient sacred ground to the blood-drenched trenches of a chaotic battlefield. Wolcen’s most substantial twists begin with character creation. Outside of basic cosmetic options, your biggest choice from the outset is what weapon you want to start with. You aren’t asked which role you want to embody or what classic archetype you want to build towards. Wolcen won’t directly ask you that at any point, letting you craft whatever type of class you choose–in theory, at least. Each weapon you equip changes your basic attack, but you’re free to pair that up with any combination of abilities. Abilities are picked up like loot, letting you learn spells, melee flurries, and ranged barrages and swap between them easily as any other piece of gear. Each of these abilities feeds off of either willpower or rage, which form two halves of the same resource meter. Consuming one generally fills the other, while basic attacks from your selected weapon will typically recharge one or the other in tandem. Your ability to pair together different abilities is restricted by how well they synergize within this tug-of-war between willpower and rage. It’s entirely possible to open a skirmish with spells that build rage, which you then use for abilities that both require it and build willpower in return, letting you seesaw between the two disciplines.

In the early stages I was able to create a mage-warrior combination, slashing foes with a single-handed sword while raining down ice on them with magical abilities. Each attack looks spectacular in motion; bright red glyphs accompany fire spells, with burning embers left in their wake glistening off the dark and dreary caves I found myself exploring the game’s opening hours. As you start layering abilities onto one another the screen is filled with a gorgeous cacophony of colors, not only communicating important information to you visually but coating the surroundings in stunning effects and reactions to the destruction you’re causing.
