Well, me and my fellow feather-inclined friends can finally rest easy, as the unrelentingly charming and wonderfully absurd Untitled Goose Game has finally brought our sleepless nights peace by showing us the answer – and that answer is a magical kind of fowl play that replaces murder with merciless annoyance. It’s a short game, but that time is packed with plenty of laughs and simple pleasures. As implied by the absence of a title, in Untitled Goose Game you play as a goose. But not just any goose: you’re a goose who is also a total asshole. (Honestly, maybe that just means you are a regular goose.) You run around a lovely, minimalist English village honking, flapping your wings, and generally doing goose things as you clear off a hand-written checklist full of mischievous goose tasks. Much of Untitled Goose game genuinely feels like a stealth game. Even the biggest asshole of a goose has to be sneaky at times, hiding in bushes or in boxes as you wait for the right time to rush out and cause mayhem. It’s not an exaggeration to compare it to the likes of Hitman or Metal Gear Solid, just with goose-based shenanigans replacing all that icky murder. Slowly creeping up behind an unsuspecting sap who is holding an item you need or using strategically placed walkie-talkies to lure some mook away with HONKs never failed to make me laugh. The foul deeds required of you can range from stealing food for a picnic to nabbing a gardener’s keys off his belt to untying a little boy’s shoelaces, scaring him until he runs away and trips, then quickly stealing his glasses and letting him blindly search the ground until you bring him the wrong pair back. It is gloriously malevolent. Who wrote this list? That much is unclear, but we know whoever did has a special kind of hatred in their heart. I loved just about every maniacal task I was given, all of which are as weird as they are clever. It’s hard to describe the strange pleasure Untitled Goose Game elicited as I let out triumphant victory honks while the gardener stood on the edge of the water shaking his head in frustration. While a task like “Rake in the Lake” lacks wiggle room for how you can go about crossing it off your list, many of the others thrive off of flexibility, improvisation, and creative problem solving. Another early one asks you to get the gardener wet, which can be accomplished in a number of different ways that I won’t spoil (simply because there are relatively few objectives overall, so spelling this one out would give away a large percentage of them).

No consequences

Not every task is like this, but I loved that many of the solutions I came up with could feel unique to me. However, it can be a tad frustrating at times that grabbing objects with your beak is a little less precise than you’d want it to be for a game that requires some speed and accuracy to avoid being thwarted by a pesky human. Granted, a goose grabbing a full-size pumpkin with its beak doesn’t exactly sound like it would be the most elegant thing in the world, but incorrectly highlighting one item to grab because it was just a little too close to another could sometimes waste precious seconds and cause my carefully laid gardener traps to go to waste. Thankfully, there is a delightful lack of consequence or urgency in most areas, letting you take your time, mess up, and experiment as you refine your bill-based terror. Getting caught with an object simply makes you drop it, which can often result in a hysterical back and forth as you nab something out of a person’s hand over and over. Messing up can still throw a monkey wrench in your plans (especially in an area like the pub, which has a bouncer who will shoo you outside), but there are no “Goose Over” screens to fear, and I wouldn’t really want that any other way. But what really ties this downy duvet together is its music and sound effects. Much of the time there won’t be any music playing at all, letting you relentlessly honk away or just listen to the adorable patter of your little feet, which accompanies one of the best walk animations of 2019.  (I also loved tiny details like bottles, traffic cones, or even a harmonica altering your honk while you are holding them in your bill.) When there is music, the piano-driven score expertly fades in and out with the action on screen – it lent an air of Benny Hill-style ridiculousness to chases, and always seemed to mischievously creep in at the perfect time just as I started to sneak up on an unsuspecting target. It’s used with a light touch, but to incredible effect. Once you complete most of the checklist for an area, a new path will open up letting you move on to the next one, complete with another checklist and a fresh set of unsuspecting victims. You’ll spread your feathers of doom across the village main street, multiple gardens, and even an outdoor pub in what connects to make up a congruous and fun to explore village – Untitled Goose Game is mostly linear, but side paths will open up to enable shortcuts back and forth. And therein lies the biggest fault in this goose-based adventure: it’s pretty dang short. It only took me about an hour and a half to play through the five main areas of this quaint village, and while I absolutely loved every second of it, I wasn’t ready to give up the gander just yet. This English village ultimately felt like only a single level of a game, but the rest was missing, leaving a whole lot of unexplored territory on the table. I easily could have seen my goose exploring other locales, each with their own unique areas and checklists. It feels like the goose is taken away too soon – like he had so much more mayhem to give. That said, what’s here is lovingly crafted, filled with tiny touches in every corner and with everything made to feel shiny and crisp to both look at and play with.

Short but fun

There’s a bit more to do beyond the credits, too, with a new set of checklists appearing with tasks that require you to run between areas for some additional challenge – as well as a bit of speedrunning for those so inclined. It kept me busy for another hour or two, but I still wish this goose had soared a bit further. For a game that sees you controlling waterfowl and doesn’t feature any robots, guns or tortured subplots, it’s incredible how much attention Untitled Goose Game has garnered since it was revealed way back in October 2017. Thanks to its unique visual style, whimsical setting and instantly relatable protagonist, House House’s sophomore title captured the hearts and minds of all that saw it, and subsequent hands-on sessions over the past few months have done little to reduce the level of hype. Quite the opposite, in fact – it quickly became one of our most eagerly-awaited Switch titles for 2019. Now we finally have the finished product in our hands, it’s everything we hoped it would be. It’s a joy to play, a wonder to behold and sticks in your mind long after you’ve finished it – which, sadly, won’t take much time as longevity happens to be this particular goose’s Achilles’ heel. Having said that, while it lasts, Untitled Goose Game is a complete and utter riot; a game that not only makes you laugh out loud but also exercises your reflexes, brainpower and resourcefulness. The A button causes the goose to pick things up with its beak – heavier items can only be dragged – while the Y button emits a honking sound which can be used to attract the attention of humans or make them jump and drop whatever it is they are carrying (this is important). The B button causes the goose to sprint (an essential skill, but one that reduces your turning circle and overall responsiveness), while ZL makes it duck down, allowing it to pass through tight spaces or reach items on the ground. ZR causes it to flap its wings, L zooms the camera in, R zooms out and the Minus button brings up your current list of objectives. These objectives are deliciously goofy and often heavily disruptive to the lives of the peace-loving people in the quaint English village where the game takes place. You’re asked to perform tasks like creating a picnic from assorted items dotted around a garden or dressing up a stone bust with various bits of clothing. Elsewhere, you must trick someone into breaking their neighbour’s prized vase or force an individual to pay for an object they rightfully own. While some of these objectives have clear pathways to success, there are some which can be tackled in more than one way, sometimes using items found elsewhere in the game. We’re not talking Hitman levels of possibilities here, but the game certainly encourages experimentation. While Untitled Goose Game was billed as a ‘stealth’ experience just after its announcement, remaining out of sight isn’t as important as you might expect; sure, there are times when hiding behind a bush and spooking a human is necessary, but you can often run about causing annoyance in plain sight and still get the job done

As a sandbox of cheekiness

There are no ‘insta-fail’ stealth missions here, thank goodness (you do, however, get the chance to hide in a box, Solid Snake-style). Each ‘to do’ item on your list is neatly summarised in a single sentence, and while there are some examples which could be seen as too obtuse, it’s usually pretty obvious what is required of you – the challenge is manipulating both the people and the items in order to tick off that particular objective. Each completed task has a line drawn through it on your notepad (geese have stationary, apparently); never has the sound of a pencil meeting paper sounded so rewarding. As you tick off tasks, Untitled Goose Game’s sublime interface and fully-realised world really come to the forefront; your pesky winged avatar is a real joy to control, and thanks to some convincing and robust physics, objects react just as you’d expect them to – balls roll down gentle inclines, while solid items stack upon one another fairly reliably (ideal when a challenge which requires you to weigh down a set of scales, for example). Certain objects are a little annoying to manipulate and control (the aforementioned ball, for example, which often feels like it has a life of its own) but using a combination of your crouching posture and the A-button ‘peck’, you can usually get the job done. And, while it’s not possible to ‘lose’ an item required for progress by either accident or design (even dropping something down the big, tempting well in the centre of the village simply results in it reappearing in the pond) Override 2: Super Mech League

akes things a little easier when you really get in a muddle and can’t recall where you left those bloody glasses. The game’s village is divided into sections which, once you’ve ticked off all of the objectives, open up into other areas. The whole village is interconnected thanks to a series of unlockable gates, which come in very handy later on when you’re tasked with transplanting objects from one area to another. There’s a nice degree of variety on display, too; the opening garden gives way to the busier high street, which is superseded by some prim-and-proper terraced housing and then a grand public house and restaurant, complete with dartboard, delivery van and angry landlord (and landlady). The way in which all of these locations interlink is well done; outside of the opening boot sequence, there are no load times to speak of. This is a seamless and brilliantly-realised environment which, if you’re from the British Isles, will seem instantly familiar. According to the developer, the game’s look was influenced by UK TV programmes like Postman Pat and Thomas the Tank Engine; it’s remarkable to consider that House House is actually based on the other side of the world – the Australian team has truly nailed the look and atmosphere of your typical, unassuming English hamlet. The music, too, is brilliant; it’s context-sensitive and reacts to the on-screen action.

When you’re quietly stalking around trying to keep a low profile (flower beds and bushes are helpful here) the audio drops down, but the moment someone spots you stealing one of their items, the piano-based tune swells and rises perfectly, lending that little bit of extra tension and urgency to proceedings. While we’re on the topic of presentation, performance in both docked and handheld mode is excellent – there are a few instances where the frame rate dips a little, but it’s never anywhere close to being game-breaking. Outside of the setting, one of the obvious key attractions of Untitled Goose Game is the fact that you take on the role of a really annoying bird. While the checklist of tasks ensures that you’re duty-bound to create mischief, just as much fun can be had creating your own brand of freeform annoyance. Indeed, when we handed the game to someone who had never heard of it before, we were surprised to find that instead of following the objectives, they simply wandered about seeing what items they could steal and hurl into a nearby pond. Untitled Goose Game scores highly; it helps that there are numerous hidden objectives which can be unlocked by experimenting with the environment and the items found within. The world is so utterly convincing – and so brilliantly governed by its own set of rules – that simply wandering around is a pleasure in itself; watching the gardener diligently attempt to tidy up the massive mess you’ve so thoughtlessly made (a commendable trait that many of the human characters posses) is both gratifying and ever-so-slightly mortifying at the same time.
