Diverse characters.

Are you looking for a fight? Sounds like the threatening enquiry of a ne’er-do-well, but it’s the height of decorum compared to the typical inhabitant of a scrolling beat ’em up. Tunche is no different, as its assorted jungle pests don’t stop to ask how you feel about being licked, whomped, or banana-targeted – they just dive straight in and gnaw the HP off you. The whole game doesn’t hang around to onboard the player either. There is a lot happening from the get-go, with Andrex-length scrolls of lore and instructions, a home camp screen that soon fills up with playable and non-playable characters, multiple collectible currencies, and stalls where you shop calculatedly through skill trees for multiple character profiles. That’s not to mention the in-play pick-ups and the constantly expanding movesets of each of five playable characters. Or Ninja Warriors (both excellently modernised for Switch in recent years). So what more does Tunche bring to what is already a pretty cool table? First, you will have already noticed its artwork: painstakingly, lovingly crafted 2D drawings, inspired by South American folklore. These are animated satisfyingly and, for the most part, telegraph enemy moves so you can react to crowds of them – although the action can get muddied when the screen really fills up. Second, the ancient beat-em-up formula of simple action, ready to accommodate the casual button masher, has been dressed up not only with the collectibles and upgrades but with a roguelite mechanic. In practice, this means starting the game with some of the characters is tough going. You’re supposed to get wiped out and sent back home, ready to power up a little and try again, eventually gaining the resources and the skill to get further through the jungle, unlock story sections, and seek the Tunche. But it feels harsh when the first plays can be very short and players are asked to wait close to a minute for the action to load. You’ll have plenty of chance to listen to the music, then, which brings enough ideas to stay interesting and provides a vibey backdrop. Sound design is solid and does justice to the visuals. Tunche’s unlockable story segments feel a little wasted. They’re delivered through fabulous comic-book set-ups, and if only LEAP Game Studios had the confidence to let the drawings carry the narrative, they’d have made the most of their greatest strength. However, the comics can descend into yet more heavy, tiny text, sucking the magic out of it all. You step into the shoes of one of the five skilled warriors who have been summoned to stop the chaos that has erupted in the Peruvian jungle.

As you make your way back out of the jungle, you feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. You know that you’ve saved the day, and that the jungle will now be at peace. And as you leave the jungle behind, you know that you’ll always be remembered as the hero who saved the Peruvian jungle from darkness. As players progress through the game, they can unlock new abilities and upgrades for their characters, allowing them to become even more powerful and capable in combat.  Tunche draws inspiration from the rich and diverse mythology of Peru, featuring a variety of creatures and stories that are unique to the region. This adds a sense of cultural richness and depth to the game that is rarely seen in the gaming world. Overall, Tunche is an exciting and engaging game that offers a unique and immersive experience for players of all skill levels. Some of my earliest gaming memories revolve around arcade beat ’em ups. And while I still find the genre entertaining, some that don’t share my fond memories may find beat ’em ups repetitive. Tunche by developer Leap Game Studios and publisher HyperTrain Digital embraces the genre’s repetitive tendencies and combines them with rogue-lite elements. Along with downright gorgeous visuals and rich folklore to draw from, it’s a relatively solid single-player or cooperative battling experience as a package. Tunche’s story follows five youths as they seek the Amazon spirit and game’s namesake, Tunche. Each character has their own reason for encountering the spirit, but to get to it, they must travel down the banks of the Amazon river, which has recently been infested with several monstrous creatures. Many of these creatures and characters are drawn directly from South American folklore. It’s nice seeing tales and figures not often found in gaming represented here. Along with the Amazon regions and setting, it immediately stands out as something a bit different.

There are four regions in Tunche, each containing ten levels and a boss at the end of each section. The gameplay feels similar to other beat ’em ups, a range of movement and basic moves that will feel right at home with veterans of the genre. Rogue-lite elements quickly come into play as you’re not meant to get too far without failing. When you do, you are brought back to your campsite, where you can use items obtained on your journey to upgrade your characters. These moments are incredibly generous, allowing you to maintain your money, experience points, and other items collected from a run. The only thing you’re not able to carry with you are orbs which work as temporary stat boosts you can stack on top of each other. The other items you collect can be used to give you new moves, permanently increase your stats, and provide you with possible health regenerations in future runs. One of the ways this is implemented is through individual character skill trees. It’s presented nicely and motivates you to jump back into your next run and try again for more unlockables. Experience for your skill tree only pertains to that individual character; every other upgrade works towards your general future runs regardless of character. There are quite a few offered upgrades at the campsite, allowing players struggling with several options to make their playthroughs a tad easier. In contrast to some older arcade beat ’em ups that rely on cheap enemy movies, Tunche actually has a more in-depth battle system. Taking influence from modern combat systems in gaming, enemies will quickly telegraph their strike, allowing you to dodge out of the way. This creates a lot of movement when playing and helps keep things a bit more engaging.
